TlT for Tat. Joo and Commodore
Rogers, brother blacksmiths iu Whitewa
ter, Wisconsin, have a great reputation as
practical jokers. Last spring Joe bought
an old fashioned churn, for the purpose of
manufacturing his own butter, aud as the
Commodore was a widower, and lived with
Joe, all sn-ih work naturally fell to him.
One day, after supper, the first churning
was got ready, and the Commodore was
invited to churn.
"Hold on," said he, "till I go down
town and get some terbacker."
He went, and while gone, Joe did the
churning, and took the butter, and left
the buttermilk in the churn.
The Commodore returned, looked at the
churn, took off his coat, at;d said, "Wall,
old churn, it's you and I, and here's for
ye !" and commenced his labor. After
churning a couple of hours, he remarked
that he "guessed it would be cheaper to
buy butter than to mako it." "I think
bo, too," said Joe "if you you are going
to churn it out of buttermilk !"
. A few days alter this, Joe put one end
of a small bar of iron into his forge fire,
and gave his bellows three or four pumps,
and then stepped into the back shop.
While he was gone, the Commodore heat
ed the iron to a black heat, then changed
ends with it, and stepped out of the front
door.
In came Joe, took up the iron, but
dropped it instarter, holding up his burn
ed hand and roaring with pain. "Put on
some buttermilk, Joe," said the Commo
dore "it's good for a burn !''

is well known that the negroes at the
South havo very generally the idea that a
division of lauds is soou lo take place ;
some ot them look for it at Christmas and
some at New Years. A paper printed at
Galveston, called Flakes JJulleli.-i, thus
explains the origin of the idea :
"During the war, when designing poli
ticians wished to fire the Southern heart
anew, they told the people that if they
did not succeed in secession, their lands
would be divided amongst their slaves,
and the whites of the south would be
placed beneath the blacks, and become
hewers of wood and drawers of water.
Politicians said so from the stump to au
diences in which there were negroes;
their prrsenc there can easily be under
stood by all who are acquainted with the
Southern States; they were there as car
riage drivers, waiters and ladies' maids.
They heard these things and repeated
them to others. The newspapers con
taining the same assertions were carried
into the different homesteads and their
contents rtad and discussed before the
negroes. Many of the wh'Ues made these
assertions and regarded it as iank treason
to contradict them. Some of the negroes
were foolish enough to believe them.
After reflecting, sensible men will not be
surprised that some of the negroes enter
tain these false ideas."
