    A Magnanimous Dane. During the
rara that raged from 1622 to 1GGO, be
tween Frederick II. of Denmark and
CbarleS'Gustavus of Sweden, after a bat
tie, in which the victory had remained
with the Danes, a stout burgher ot Jblems
borg was about to refresh himself, ero
retiring to have nis wounds dressed, with
a draught of beer from a wooden bottle
when an imploring cry from a wounded
bwede lyiDg on the lield made him turn
with the very words of Sicncy "Thy
need is crcater than mine." lie knelt
down by the fallen enemy, to pou the ii
quor in his mouth. His requital was a
pistol-shot in the shoulder Iroru the treach
erous Swede.
"Rascal I" he cried, "I would have be-
fricudca you, and you would murder me
m return, isow 1 will punish you. J
would have given you the whole bottle
but now you shall have only half." And
drinking off half, he gave the rest to the
Swede.
. The king, hearing the story, sent for
the burgher, and asked him how 113 came
to spare the lite ot such a rascal.
'Sire," said the honest burgher, "I
could never kill a woundel enemy.
'Thou meriteht to be made a noble," the
king said, and created him one immedi
ately, giving him as an armorial bearing
a wooden bottle pierced with an arrow.
Marriage Notices. The following
we clip from an exchange paper, and re
ppecffully recommend iu careful perusal
by those of our friends "contemplating"
matrimony :
"All notices of marriages, where no
bride-cake is seut, will be fet up in small
type and poked in some outlandish corner
oi the paper. here a handsome piece
ot cake is tent, it will be put conspicu
ously in largo letters : when gloves or
other bride favors are added, a piece of
11. . , . . . . .
illustrative poetry will be given in addi
tion. When, however, the editor attends
the ceremony in projrii persona and
kisses the bride, it will have especial
notice very large type, and the most
appropriate poetry that can be begged,
borrowed, stolen or coined from the brain
editorial."
How aue You, Clerk 7 We haven't
heard of a richer thing than was lately
perpetrated upon a bookstore clerk some
thing less than a thousaud miles from
Genesee-street bridge. Everybody has
heard jokes perpetrated upon the odd
names which it is the tashion to bestow
upon books now-a-days, but, we venture to
cay, nothing richer than this incident.
Awell known wag stepped into the book
store above mentioned, and inquired:
"Have you 'The Woman in White?'"
"Yes," replied the clerk. 'All Alone V "
asked the searcher after literature. "Ye3,"
responded the clerk. " Iq the Dark V "
still queried the questioner. "Ye, Sir,"
again promptly answered the attendant.
"Well, all I havo to say is," retorted the
wag, "you have a nice thing of it ! Good
bye!"
"Mad ANTnoNY's Trick. In our Rev
olutionary war, the British held possession
of .a 6trong-hod which our forces could
not gain without a knowledge of how
matters were conducted inside. Anthony
Wayne, "Mad Anthony," as he was call
ed, undertook this delicate and dangerous
service. Ho spoke Dutch like a native;
and getting into a cart, he loaded it with
cabbages, and started for the fort. So
complete was hi3 disguise, that no suspi
cion was entertained. lie brought just
what the garrison needed ; he took time
to peddle them all out and was suffered to
depart. The next day the fort was taken,
when the oiEcer recognized Wayne at the
neaa, ana very coolly asked "Sir, how

In doing so, ho swallowed a email ball of
silk which lay in the bottom of the tum

knowing what it was. ho began pulling at
the end, and the bull unrolling, he 6oon
