,: The Arab and His Serpents. -A
Paris correspondent says : I stopped to
see some of the numerous thows, which
are in full operation uring the holidays.
' I found mjselt at last within a circle
- where an Arab was showing off with pev
cu or ciht great serpents. I wanted to
-turn and go away, but the crowd had be
come so great that I found I could cot
, move, and eo was obliged to remain a
witness of certainly one of the most cu
rious and frightful spectacles ever offered
to the public The snake charmer was
seated on the ground, after the fashion of
Li country, with his snakes all around
Iiiin ; two or three of them were of most
enormous size, almost as large as a full
grown boa. lie would take them up in
his bauds, let them wind around his legs,
arms, body, neck and head ; stick out
their forked tongues and kis3 him on the
hands, the lips, the eyelids, and present
their heads or tails to him as be comman
ded them.
Whilo tho speetacte Was proceeding in
the most successful manner, one of the
largest suakes slipped off unnoticed by the
Arab, or apparently so, and dragging itself
along, got out of the crowd, everybody,
vou nsav be sure, civinjr him a clear
spaco. Just out of the circle two dogs
were playing together. The serpent no
pooner espied them than he raised his
head, and in un instant was busy winding
himself around the body of one or the un
fortunate animals. The poor dog literally
screamed with frishi. It was like the
scream of a human being.
The Arab no sooner heard it and un
derstood the cause than he got up, went
to the spot, and without touching the ser
pent at all, spoke a lew words, and the
creature instantly uncoiled itself slowly
until it left the dog free, and I assure you
One of the canine race never ran as last
as that dog did as soon as he got loose.
The surprise of the spectators of this
Ecenc knew no bounds, and pieces of sil
, ver were literally showered into the Arab's
turban.
7Mr. Greeley, as is well known to
his friends, is very fond of a dry joke on
almost any subject, and in his love of jest
does not even spare what is called the di
vine institution, matrimony. A young
man went to him not long 6i nee for ad
vice, and informed the journalist that ho
had thought seriously of settling in North
Carolina, where it appeared to him there
was a good opening for youthful energy
and enterprise. " Don't do it !" said
Horace, emphatically; " don't do it, my
friend. I went there once myself, once
too often, indeed j I found my wife there.
Take my advice young man, and keep
out of North Carolina."
fcfi,A small boy heard a parson preach
a sermon from these words, " Ye must be
born again," which wa3 frequently re
peated during the discourse. The little
hearer paid strict attention to all that
was said, and particularly to the text.
After he returned he became melan
choly. His father observed it and in
quired the cause. The Doy told him that
the preacher said he must bo born again.
" Well, my son," replied his father,
" why do you cry about it?"
"Oh!" taid the boy, "I'm so afraid
that next time I'll be made a gal I"
.
JETThe funniest story of the age is
told by a Detroit paper. A lady suspect
ed her husband of improper intimacy with
tho hired girl. Without informing her
husband of her intention, she sent the
girl off that niht, and went to sleep in
the girl's bed. She had not been there
long when somebody came and took the
othep half of the bed. About two hours
after, the wife arose, intending to reveal
tho infidelity of her spouse, and struck, a
light, when lo ! it was the hired man.
Sjf,"13i!ly," said a benevolent vender
of food for stoves, as with cheerful visage
he sat down to his matutinal repast, "is it
cold ?" " Werry cold, father," was the
reply. " Is the gutters froze, Dilly ?"
rejoined the parent. " Werry hard,
father, they is," was the response. ' Ah !"
sighed the old gentleman, " put up the
coal two pence a pail, Billy. God help
