"With tbe present number, we commenco Vo.iinie Seven of The Alleghanian. Upon the occasion of en tering on a new ncwspapoiial year, it is usually the custom with editors to indulge in a few self-gratulatory remarks as to the past, and to say something concerning the future. We conform to the general rule to the extent of saying that Out success during the year just closed was all we hoped for or expected. We enter Upon the new volumo with many new subscrib ers and nearly all the old ones with, id act, a subscription list as largo as that of any newspaper in the county, and With a largely increased advertising patronage. In a word, we are satisfied with the past year and with the support it bestowed on us. As to the futtlrej We will only say that we will continue to print as good a paper as We are capable of more than which to one can reasonably aslc. Rut our efforts in the past as a journalist may be accepted as an indication of what we will do in tho future, tn addition to tho usual features of The Atteghanian, we will shortly introduce several new ones, prom inent among which will bo an "Educa tional Department," edited by a compe tent practical teacher, tt will ever be our aim to try giro our patrons the worth of their subscription money. If nny of these think we fail herein, of course thSy are liberty to show their disapprobation tf our efforts by Withdrawing their sup port frotu us, (first stepping up to the Captain's office and settling their respective accounts )) and in their retirement from the grateful influence of the beams of knowledge Which emanate from our col umns, they will have our prayers that they may not degenerato into mere mudsills and gorillas. We well retaeniber it was five years HgrO or thereabout when a question af fectiug the solidity, or stability, of The AUvghanian cain.8 Up tihdef considor- ation, that a certain individual said of our paper that it was "t ters rphetiieral con- cern.'1 We Were young then, and sedsi- tive on this point, and We didn't like the . . . , , Lt 1 ., , remark at all. Last week we mentioned that the number of prisoners confined In our county jail was eleven. On Friday night this number was reduced to nine by the escape of Messrs. Ream and Riddle, the two men charged with the murder of Misses Paul and Mundy. They effected their doliVerance froin du rance vile by Cutting through the Wains cot and Wttll. What the idea of these two men ia in running oft, it were hard to divine. They were" both tried for the charge preferred against them, last court, and were acquitted ; and they had only to remain in prison till next December when they would probably be honorably releas ed. Since they have gone away, however, and without saying good-bye, they leave the impression upon the mindd of all that they feared the result of the proceedings at next court. The richest thing about the whole matter is, that two watchmen are employed by the county to guard the jail o' nights. These worthies were on duty that night; but notwithstanding their lynx-eyed Vigilance, the prisoners succeeded in successfully making off, leaving the fact that the birds had flown to be discovered in the course of an hour, an hour and a half, or two hours after daybreak I On Tuesday, Sheriff Myers discover ed two prisoners confined in one of tho up-staira cells in the act of attempting to cut out through the wall. They wero removed to another cell and ironed) where they will doubtless be secure. Oil in Cambria Count. Tho Al toona Tribune makes the following men tion of the late reported strike of oil near Wilmoro : "It has been demonstrated beyond doubt that oil exists among the extensive coal fields of Cambria county, and it seems almost certain that it is now but a question ot depth to find it in re munerative if not in immense quantities. Tho oleaginous fluid was brought up on Thursday last, from a depth of some five hundred feet, by the eand pump of tLe well now being put down near Wilniore. We have the best authority for saying that Ultra is no mistake about the finding of or quality cf the fluid, and it only re mains ttj be seen whether the sanguine hopes of the operators as to quantity will yet be realized. At latest accounts the drill was passing through white sandstone rock, and beneath it . lies the hope of a handsome yield." New Schedule. A slight change in the running of the trains on the Penna. ': . Mas. Emma Bell. Married. On Saturday evening, 14th inst., at the residence ot the bride's mother, by Rev. Mr. Wilson, Mr. Robert E. Jones to Miss Libbie Roberts, both of Ebensburg. On an alliance like this an alliance of strength and true manhood with the embodiment of beauty and goodness it is eminently fit that the plaudit of "well done !" should be bestowed. We con gratulate our young friends in that they have come out from among those who know nothing of thetrue secret of tem poral happiness, and have enrolled them selvos with those of t'other Bide. . For mouths past the problem agitating the miDds of statesmen has been how to re construct the Uoion : they should look and learn a iesfeon, for here U union has been con if not reconstructed which 'will last forever. Our earnest prayer is that this union, formed under the happiest auspices, may be fraught with the choicest blessings of Heaven, and that no cloud nor etorm may ever arise to obscure for a mo ment its sunshine ur dim its glory. For the kind remembrancer to ye printer man, the happy couple have our thanks. Miraculous Escape.
