2SE A Beautiful Deed. A youncj officer vas connected with Sheridan's brigade. It was in one of those forced marches when they had driven back the enemj and had been in the saddle for several consecutive days and nights, that this trooper availed himself of a temporary halt, to slip from his saddle and 6tretch himself upon the turf hia horse, mean while, browsing in the immediate vicinity, lie had slept lor some littlo time, when he was suddenly awakened by the frantic pawing of his horse at his side. Fatigued by his long ride, he did not rouse at once, but lay in that partialJy conscious state which so frequently attends great phys ical prostration. Soon, however, the faith ful animal perceiving that its efforts had failed to accomplish their object, licked hia face, and placing its mouth close to his ear uttered a loud snort. Now thor oughly awake, he sprang up, and as the horse turned for him to mount, he saw for the first time thai his comrades had all disappeared, and that the enemy were coining down upon him at full gallop. him with the speed oKtho wind Fafelyi from the danger and soon placed hi( amoner hia companions. 'Thus," he acj ded with emotion, "the noble fellow SLw'ed me from captivity, and perhaps from death." Amusing Incident. A few mornings sinro. ns th shf from .TefFprson eitv was j -- c- j smoothly gliding along through a luxuri ant prairie, pretty well loaded with pas sengers, amongst whom was a son of Ken tucky, who, by tha vibratory motion of the vehicle, had fallen into a sound snooze, by some unaccountable accident it sudden ly tipped over, depositing the passeugers, pell mell, on the green sward by the road side, the Kentuckian at the bottom, with fevcral on top of him, amongst whom were three or four of the gentler sex. No one being hurt, and ''old Kentuck" only a little aroused from the depth of his slumber, he cried out: - "What in the thunder is the matter? get off of me, if you please. I've paid for this seat, and all the varmints west of the 31issis.ippi can't take it from me !" "The stage has turned over," said sev eral voices at once. 'The devil it has I" roared out old Kentuck. "Is anybody killed ? I tho't from the pi'e of men and women on me, it was ouly a trick to get my seat !" Mailing Matter Outside of the Post Office.' -The Post Office Depart ment at Washington is notifying the post masters generally that Hie penalties fixed by law for carrying letters outside of the mail?, when not enclosed in Government stamped envelopes, will be rigidly enforc ed hereafter in every instance where vio lations are known to exist. Many persons have been in the habit of mailing their letters on the cars, on steamboats, omni buses, hacks, &c, because it was more convenient to do so than to deposit them in the vost office. Sometimes it was es- pecially convenient to do so, after the mails at the post office had closed, liut the law against the practice is very plain. The reahon of it is that net only does the Government suffer from the loss of this carrying, but mail agents and mail car riers have no cancelling apparatus to des troy stamps with, and neither have they rating scales with which to determine the amount of postage that should be paid on a letter, and heuee it often happens that the uncancelled stamps have been used again and again by dishonest persons. The Man w ho Despised Wiiiskey Drinkers. It was on one of the river steamers, at dinner, that an able matronly lady' remarked iu the midst of conversation- with a grave-lookiug gentleman, on the subject of temperance : MOh, of all things iu the world, I des pise whiskey-drinkers!" The gentleman dropped his knife and fork in the ardor of his feeling, extended his hand and took hers within his own, and. with emotion that threatened tears over the loss of ruined sons, ho replied with faltering words : "Madame, I resprct your sentiments and the heart that dictates them, I permit no one to go beyond mc in despising whiskey drinking. I have been disgusted on this very boat, and I say it now before our Captain'3 face. What, I say, can be more disgusting than to see a well-dressed, re spectable, and virtuous-looking young man step up to the bar of this boat, and, without fear of observing eyes, boldly ask for whiskey, when they know that there is in that bar the best old cognac brandy !"
