    Belligerent Society. John and
Charles Kemble were sitting one night in
the pit of Covent Garden, listening to a
play. Charles remarked to his brother:
"I really think this is the very best play
or representation that Sbakcspearo ever
wrote'
No sooner had he made this remark
than a huge, red-beaded, broad-shouldered
Irishman, who sat immediately behind
him, leaned forward and tapped him on
the shoulder to secure his attention.
"I think, sir," he observed, with a
strong broguo, "ye said it was one Shakes
peare wLat wraught that play. It was
not Shakspeare what wraught that play."
"Oh, sir," replied Mr. K., coolly,
"very wcll.':
A thort time after this the Irishman
tapped him on the shoulder again.
"Do you bclave, sir, it was my friend,
Linnard M'Laily, what wraught that
play V"
"Oh, yes, certainly, sir if you eay so'
was the peaceful answtr.
For a while he remained unmolested,
but at last he felt the heavy fingers once
more.
"Your friend that sets on your left
hand," exclaimed the Irishman, "don't
look as if he belaved it teat me friend
Linnurd M'Nally what wraught that play !"
This was too much for the brothers, who
rose and left the house, cot deeming it
either pleasant or Eale to -stay in such
belligerent society.
The Way of the World. A corre
spondent, alluding to the fact that the
most of the calls which modern clergy
men feel imperatively bound to obey, are
from comparatively low salaries to high
ones, says that those calls remind him of
the honest old negro's anecdote. It was
as follows :
A certain divine, having concluded to
change his pastoral' situation, mentioned
his determination from the pulpit. Alter
service was over, an old negro, who was
one of his admirers, went up to him and
desired to know his motives in leaving
his flock. The parson answered, "lie had
a call."
"Where from, ma?sa V said the negro.
"The Lord," answered the parson.
"Massa, what you get for preaching
here?"
"Six hundred. dollars, Caesar."
"Aid what you get toder phce V
"A thousand."
"Ah, massa, de Lord might call you all
day IroaSljOOO to SGOO you no go."
A Boy's Lawsuit. Under a -great
tree clone to the village, two bnys found
a walnut. "It belongs to me," fraid Igna
tius, "lor I was the first to see it." "No,
it belongs to me," cried Bernard, "for I
was the first to pick it up," aud so they
began to quarrel in earnest. "I will set
tle the dispute," said tbe elJer boy, who
just came up. He placed himse'if between
the two boys, broke the nut in two, and
said : "The one piece of shell belongs
to the one who first saw the tut; the oth
er piece of shell belongs to him who first
picked it up, and the kernel I keep for
judging the cae. And this," as he sat
down and laughed, "is the common end
of most lawsuits."
Waterfalls. Master Willie had late
ly peeu and heard much of the "ITaer
als" with which the young ladies nowa
days adorn the backs of their heads.
llh attention was fully awake ou the
subject. One muddy day he saw on the
road a horse whose careful proo'tn had
braided and knotted up his switch-tail.
"Willie cried, "Oh ! pana, papa! bee that
horse ! He's :ot a waterfall to his tail!"
Xg While Father Tavlor was giving
one of his temperance lectures, a well
known drunkard, feelintr toucheJ, com
menced hissing. Instantly Father Taylor
turned the attention of the large audience
to the in.-olent rowdy, and then forcibly
said as he pointed to his victim, "There's
a red nose got iuto cold water; don't you
hear it hiss V
