The Par Value of Brains. Work
ing as an ordinary hand in a Philadelphia
ship-yard, until very recently, wits a man
named John L. Knowlton. His peculiar
ity was that, while others of his class were
at ale houses, or indulging in jollification,
he was incessantly engaged in studying
upon mechanical combinations. One of
his companions secured a poodle dog, and
spent six months in teaching the quadru
ped to execute a jig upon his hind legs.
Knowlton spent the same period ia dis
covering some method by which he could
saw out ship timber in n beveled form.
The first man taught hia dog to dance
Knowltou, in the same time, discovered a
mechanical combination that enabled him
to do in two hours the work that would
occupy a dozen men, by slow and laborious
process, an entire day. That saw is now
in use in all the shipyards of the country.
It cuts a beam to a curved shape as quick
ly as an ordinary saw-mill saw rips up a
btraight plank.
Knowlton continued his experiments.
He took no part in parades or target
shootings, and in a short time afterwards
he secured a patent for a machine that
turns any material whatever, into a per
fectly spherical form. He sold a portion
of his patent for a sum that is equivalent
to a fortune. The machine is now in op
eration ia Philadelphia, cleaning off can
non balls lor the government. When the
ball comes in from the mould, the surface
is crusted, and the ordinary process ol
smoothing it was slow and wearisome.
This machine, almost in an instant, and
with mathematical accuracy, peela ih:to
the surface of the metal, at the same time
smoothing out any deviations from the
perfect spheroidal form.
Within a few days the same plain, un
assuming man has invented a boring ma
chine, that was tested in the presence of a
number of scientific gentlemen, a few days
ngo. It bored at the rate of twenty-two
inches an hour, through a block of granite,
with a pressure of but three hundred
pounds upon the drill. A gentleman
present offered him ten thousand dollars
upon the spot for a part interest in the
invention in Europe, and the offer was
accepted on the spot. The moral of this
is, that people who keep on studying are
sure to achieve something. Mr. Knowl
ton does ..j. consider nimselt by any
means brilliant, but if once inspired with
an idea, he pursues -it uutil he forces it
into tangible shape. If everybody would"
follow copy, the world would be less filled
with idlers, and the streets with grum
blers and malcontents.
Excellent Maxims. The following
is a copy of the printed slip found ia the
pocket of the. venerable Stephen Allen,
drowned in the recent steamboat disaster
un the Hudson liver :
"Keep good company or none Never
be idle. If your hands cannot be useful
ly employed, attend to the cultivation cf
your mind. Always epeak the tiu'h.
Mako lew promises. Live up to your en
gagements. Keep your own secrets, if you
Lave any. When you speak to a person,
look him in the face. Good company and
good conversation are the very sinews of
virtue. G ood character is above all things
else. Your character cannot be essential
ly injured except by your own acts. If
any one speaks evil of you, let your life
be so that none will believe him. Drink
no kind of intoxicating liquors. Ever
live (misfortune excepted) within your
income. AVhen you retire o bed, think
over whdt you have been doing during the
day. Make no haste to be rich, if you
would prosper. Small and steady gains
pive competency with tranquility of mind.
Never play at any game of chance. Avoid
temptation, through fear you may not
withstand it. Earn mor,7 before you
spend it. Never run in debt, unless you.
ec a way to get out again. Never borrow,
if you can possibly avoid it. Do not
marry until you are able lo support a
wile." Never speak evil of any one. Be
just before you are generous. Keep your
telf innocent, if you would be happy.
Save when you are young, to spend when
you are old. Head over the above max
ims at least once a week.
The New Coin. A few specimens of the
new three cent coin are in circulation.
The size cf the piece is precisely that of a
dime. The obverse bears the head of the
goddess of liberty, with the . legend
"United States of America," and dated
1865. The reverse ha9 the Iloman nu
merals "111," surrounded by a wreath.
The edge of the coin is plain, unlike that
of the ten cent piec', which is milled.
"When new the piece has a silvery lustre,
but tarnishes rapidly. The law authoriz
ing the irfsue of this coin, passed March
3, 18Go, makes it a legal tender fur all
Bums not exceeding sixty ceuts, and pra
hibits any further issue of three cent
fractional currency.
