BS?-A srentlcman lately overheard the
following conversation between a man and
a woman who appeared as though they had
just returced Lorn a pleasure trip to some
of the out ot town resorts :
"Woman "Blow me, Bill, how tired I
feel ! I am as miserable, too, as a starved
cat. What a miserable world this is ! I
wish I'd never been born, that I do, and
now that I am born, I wish myself dead
again!" Man "Why, Bet, what's the
matter with you now ? What are you
grumbling about?"' Woman "Why,

Man '.'Miserable, indeed! Why, what

- ?A bar of iron, originally valued at
five dollars, is worth, when worked into
horseshoes, ten dollars and titty ceuts;
into needle, three hundred and filly-five
dollars : into renknife blades, three thou
sand two hundred and eighty-five dollars j
.into, shirt buttons, twenty-nine thousand
f'nnr' hundred and eighty dollars : into bal-
cj
ance springs of watches, two hundred and
fifty thousand dollars. Thirty-one pounds
of iron have been made into wire upwards
of onehuudred and eleven miles in length,
and so fine wa3 : the fabric that.part oi it
was converted in lieu of horsehair into
a barrister's wig!
A humorous old gentleman once
fell in with an ignorant and rather imper
tinent minister, who proceeded to Inform
the former, in very positive terms, that he
never would reach Heaven unless he was
born again, adding ('I have experienced
that happy change, aud now feel no anx
iety." "And have j ou really been bora again ?"
said the old man, musingly.
"Yes, rhave," was the .reply.
"Well," said the old man, eyeing him
attentively, "it may be all right, but I
don't think it would hurt you to be born
once 'more !"
Bg War is a solemn matter, but it is
relieved of much of its attendant solem
nity, by the many amusing stories told
of the sjldiers. We recollect of reading
somewhere that iii one of the hospitals,
while the chaplain was praying the Lord
tq be a bhield to the armies ot Union and
Liberty," a wounde'd soldier rolled over in
his bed, claped his hands, raised his eyes
toward the ceiling, and piously ejaculated
"Breastworks, Lord breastworks ' !"
CSfln conformity with the eld. custom
of advertising from the public 'sign-post
all intentions of marriage, the following
announcement once upon a time was made :
"Marriige is intended between Mr. Wil
liaoi Wills of Williamstown, and Miss
Wilheluiiua Williams of Wiliiamsbridge.'
A mischievous wag, to make it more ex
plicit, added beneath : "For particulars,
eee small Bill next year."
Jy A sympathetic individual in Detroit
having heard that the substitute ho font
to .the war was wounded, took to his bed,
from which he will et up on crutches, as
the proxy recuperates. Ho will claim u
