B. Baron Rothschild,- the wealthy
financier, is paid t a possess thb largest col
lectiou of letters soliciting donations, ever
received bj-'anj single individual. Of
course they are of all descriptions -modest,
abject, brazeD, desponding, menacing
and complimentary. It is Dot often, there
fore, that ho gets anything original in. the
begging' line, but occasionally he does.
The other day, for instance, he is said to
have received one containing the very
tempting proposition, that lor the bagatelle
of 50,000 francs, the writer would engage
to show how the Barou could prolong his
life to the age of 150 years. The follow
ing is the Duron's reply : '-Sir It has
frequently happened to me to be threaten
ed with death if I ell J not give a sum of
money. You are ceiiainly the first that
Las ever asked it of me in proposing to
prolongs my life. Your proposition is
withoutdoubt Jar belter aua more uuuiane.
But my religion teaches me that wc are
all under the hand of God, and I will not
do a'oything to withdraw myself from his
decrees. JMy refusal, moreover, does uot
in any way attack yonr discovery, lrom
which you will not fail, I hope, to profit
yourself, Regretting that 1 cannot accede
to vour proposal, I sincerely cong'aiulate
you on the 150 years winch you are called
on to live in tins world.

Messjs. Evaxs and Watsox: Gentlemes
The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which
I purchased from j-our agent, Mr. Adam R
Ba:r, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 165?,
has been subjected to a very sercre test,
which it withstood in a most satisfactory
manner. This Safe, containing all my books
together with valuable papers belonging to
myself and some-to my neignbors and friends
and represeting a yalue of over Twenty Thous
and Dollars, ($20,000) was in my Mill which
was destroyed on the n'ght of the 27th of Ju
ly, 1860, and passed thiough the fiery ordetl
unscathed. The Safe was on the second fioor
and fell to the basement ci the Mill, and wa
subjected for 6ix hours to an intense fcej
among the rui.ts, which was greatly increased
by the combustion of a large quantity ofgra:a
confined within tht brick walls. After tba
fire the safe was opened and the books acd
papers taken out in a state of perfect preser
vation, the paper not even being discolored
This fact was, however, to many bysunderl
a, better recommendation of your Sa'es that
could be expressed in any other words fron
me. Yours Respectfully,
sel 3 SAM UEL RANCH. i
