X BgL-Tlie Democrats held a' meeting in
the street, in TerreT Haute, -last Thursday,
CYeDins." Mr. 'uMack and Col Cookerly
addressed the company present, about half
of whom were Democrats. At the close
of Cookerlj's speech, many voices culled
ior Washburne, the Republican candidate
for Congress. Weshburne mounted the
box', holaing in his hand a copy of a speech
Of Dan Voorhecs, inside of winch h had
pinned a certain letter ot Benedict Arnold.
He said : ''Democrats, I-hoU in my hand
a speech of Daniel Vcorhee?, will you hear
me?" To this were answers cf -;vc3, yes."
AVa'shburne read: "Who amongjou dnro
speak or write what ho thinks against the
tyranny which ha? robbed yea cf your
property, imprisoned yon? socs, drags you
to the field of battle, and i daily deluging
your country with blood." '-Democrats,
do you -cudcrse that?" said Wshbuvne.
."Yes, 'yes.- Head it all," shouted the
Democrats. 'Rut' replied the speaker,
"that is not the speech of oorhces, but
of Denedict Arnold, the traitor. Do you
endorse it now?" ,4Yes, an, yes, no,"
roared the Democrats, and Dabcl seemed
likely to come again. The ; Democrat3
-were angry.

" B-0e our exchanges niakea an
excelleut comparison ' between (Jen. M'
Olellan and Jack Dunsby. f "Little Mac"
declares for war and the Union, and then
tells the Chicago peace party that they
must have meant the same
they voted the war a failure and swore to
an armistice. Jack Dunsby's position -is
equally clear :
OJy name's Jack Buosby. And what
I says I stand to. Whereby, why not ?
If so, what odds? Can any man say oth
erwise ? No. Awast, then ! Do I be
lieve this here son and heir's gone down,
lads? Mayhap. Do I say so?, which?
If a skipper sends out by Sen' George's
channel, making for the Dows, what's
right ahead of him ? The Goodwins.
He isn't forced to run upon the Good
wins, but may. The bearings of this
observation lays in the application of it.
That ain't no part of my duty. Awash
then, keep a bright look-out for'ard, and
good luck to you."
"EST A Union torchlight procession
took place in Washington on Friday eve.
The parade went to the White House,
and called upon the President to make a
speech. The President spoke as follows:
"Fellow-citizens I was promised not to
be called upon for a speech to night, nor
do I propose to make one; but we have
been having some very good news for a.
day or two,, so I propose that you give
three hearty cheers for Sheridan. Whilo
we are st it, we may as well consider how
fortunate it was for the sccesh that Sheri
dan was a little man. If he had been a
large man, there is no telling what he
would have done with them. I propose
three cheers for General Grant, who knew
to what use to put General Sheridan
ihree cheers for all our noble commanders,
and the soldiers and sailors three cheers
tor all the people, everywhere, who cheer
the soldiers and sailors of the Union.
And now, good night."

r3,Kiuir Charles II. on a certain time
paying a visit to Dr. Busby, the doctor
strutted through his school with hi3 hat
on his head, while his majesty walked
complacently bc-iind him, with his own
hat under his arm; but when be was taking
his leave nt the door, the doctor with great
humility thus addressed the king: "I hope
your m.-ijesty will excuse- my want of re
spect hitherto; but if my boys were to
imagine there was a greater man in the
kingdom than myself, 1 should never be
able to rule them'
g& A great political meeting in Spring
field, Illinois, was gladdened and amused
by a banner borne by two wounded sol
diei, representing a globe, which Lincoln
was pryiug up with a rail, while Andy
Jonnson was seated crosslegged upon the
North American pare of it, tailor-fashion,
sewing up a huge rent. Old Abe says to
him, "A few more stitches, Andy, and the
dear old Union will be mended!"
f "Sergeant, you have come home, I
suppose, to vote the Democratic ticket,"
said a merchant in New Bedford to a vet
eran who entered his store.
- "I have been shootiug Democrats for
three years," said the soldier, "and I am
not ia the habit of voting for the game I
kill."

The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which
I j urchnstd from 1 your agent, Mr. Adam K.
Ba r, in Lancaster City, on July 20t!i, 165?,
has been subjected to a very severe test,
which it withstood in a most satisfactory
manner. 'This Safe, containing all ray books ,
together with vamble papers belonging 10
myself and some to my ueignbors and friends
and represeting a valne of over Twenty Thous
and Dollars, (20,000) was in my Mill which
was destroyed on the-night of the 27th of Ju
ly, ' 1SC0, and passed.thif.iigh the fiery ordeal
'unscathed.: .The Safe Wat on the second floor
and fell to the basement ci the Mill, and was
subjected for six hours to an intense Leat
among the rui.is, which was greatly increased
by the combustion of a large quantity of gram
confined within ths brick walls. After the
fire Vie safo was opened and the books ana
papc-rs taken out in a state of perfect preser
vation, the paper noi even being discolored
This fact was, however, to many bystanders
a better recommendation of your Sarvs than
could be expressed in any other words from
me. ' ' Yours Respectfully,
