The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which
I purchased from your agent, Mr. Adaia K.
Barr, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 1S58,
has been subjected to a -very severe test,
which it withstood in a most satisfactory
manner. This Safe, containing all my hooks
together with valuable papers belonging to
myself and some to my neignbors and friends
and represcting a value of over Twenty Thous
and Dollars, ($20,000) was in my Mill which
was destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju
ly, I860, and passed thiough the fiery ordeal
unscathed. The Safe was on the second floor
and fell to the basement ei the Mill, and was
subjected for 6ix hours to an intense heat
among the ruijs, which was greatly increased
by the combustion of a large quantity of grain
confined within the brick walls. After tts
fire the safe was opened and the book3 and
papers taken out in a state of perfect preser
vation, the paper not even being discolored
This fact was, h-owever, to many bystanderJ
