The army ncods men, must have men,
and our advice is, that all should volun

raising men. It's decidedly more agreea

does away with the draft. Are more in

Wrouldnt even object to have, an able-

and look after bis business, if it is profita

We would respectfully request our
friends, if they have any respect for our
feelings, not to continually remind us of
our misfortune by saluting our cars with,
"How are you, conscript '?'' We haven't
beard it over five hundred times in the
last two hours.
We are not to blame for being a con
script. If we could have our way, we
would have the drawing over again.
There are a large number in the ward we
would rather, see go than ourselves, and
wouldn't quarrel with them about making
better soldiers. We have in our mind
several who would make altogether-better
marks for rebel bullets than we would.
But it seems Uncle Sam wants us, and as

shall have tc go.

our reach illuminated portraits of our be
loved President and Secretary Chase.

STU. S. Grant's first position at West
Point was that of private in the battalion
of cadets. As a novitiate, he must needs
pass through the usual ordeals. One day,
when the company was enjoying a sham
review, he was continually harrassed with
practical jokes. Stepping quickly in front
of the parade, and tossing his cadet uni
form to a comrade, he cried out, with keen,
piercing tones :
"No more of this, gentlemen I"
"Why, what's the matter 1" they all
Btammejed out, taken by surprise.
'I say, no more of this! Captain, if
you don't know your duty better than to
violate good discipline in this manner,
lay aside your assumed position for a few
moments, and I will teach it to you."
The Captain dropped his rank, and
stepping up to Grant, was soon laid sprawl
ing, and soundly punished on the parade
ground.
'jNow," said Grant, quietly turning to
the next in command, "as you have shared
in this fun, Lieutenant, it is your duty to
defend your Captain."
The two men were 9oon engaged, and
the Lieutenant shared the fate of the com
mander. Grant now squared himself before the
front, and, glancing his flashing eye along
the line, and raising his voice still higher,
l.e exclaimed :
"You now understand, gentleman, what
is the matter. This is what's the matter,
gentlemen : I am for the protection of my
rights, and I will protect them, if I have
to grapple with every member of this com
pany I"
There was a shout along the whole lino
''Bravo!" "Well done Grant !" "Rra
o !" "Three cheers for Ohio pluck !"
"There, Grant,' you've fairlywon the
day again3t all odds!" exclaimed the Cap
tain, extending a fraternal hand. "We
shan't poke fun at you any more !" chimed
in the Lieutenant. "No, that we shan't I"
exclaimed others of his comrades, now in
the best of spirits.
Grant stooped down and calmly put on
bis coat, as if nothing unusual had hap
pened; but ho was never annoyed after
that with any cadet fun at his expense.
He was ever after called, as a brevet to
bis proof of bravery, "Company Grant."
He is thus known to this day by many in
the army.

Messrs. Evans and Watsox : Gemiehex--The
small size No. 1 Salamander safe which
I purchased from your agent, Mr. Adam R.
Barr, in Lancaster" City, on July 20th, IS:!?,
has been subjected to a very severe test,
which it withstood in a most satisfactory
manner. This Safe, containing all my hooks
together with valuable papers belonjrinj to
myself and some to my neignbors and friends
and represeting a value of over Twenty Thous
and Dollars, (620,000) was in my Mill ivhich
was destroyed on the u'ght of the 27tU of Ju

unscathed. The Safe was on the second, Coor
and fell to the basement 01 the Mill, and was
subjected for eix hours to an intense hei
among the ruijs, which wasgreatly increasti
by the combustion of a large quantity ofgraia
confined within the brick walls. After the
Cre the safo was opened and the books tui'
papers takea out in a state of perfect preser

This fact was. however, to manv bvstandcrJ
