' Fatal Termination. A' man named
Gels, brewer, residing in Carrolltown,
this county, came to his death on Satur
day under the following circumstances:
On the 4th July he had been to St.
Augustine with a load of beer, and was
returning home in the evening, when he
engaged in a race with a team he chanced
to meet on the road. This team, in at
tempting to pass him, ran against his
wagon, upsetting it, or at least jolting it
to the extent of precipitating Mr. G-. to
the ground. The wheels of the wagon
passed over liis leg, mutilating it in a
most horrible manner. The unfortunate
man was taken home, and in a short time
mortification set in, resulting as above.
The deceased was a married man, and
was aged about 35 years.
Get Out cf tiie Draft ! Now that
the $300 clause of the Conscription act
has been repealed, thereby rendering it
necessary that a man when drafted must
either procure a substitute or go, would it
Dot be the part of wisdom in the non
exempt portion of our community to take
time by the forelock and proceed at onco
to fill our quota under the call which will
soon be issued Dy the President for more
men ? Those sub districts earliest in the
market are the ones which will most easi
ly Fecure their rncD, aud at the cheapest
price. We make the suggestion for what
it is worth. -

occurred, and two men were phot one

From Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editcrof

. Although not disposed to favor or recom
mend Patent Medicines in general, through
distrust or their ingredients and effects ; I
yet know of no sufficient reasons why a man
may not testily to the benefits he believes
himself to hare received from any simple
preparation, in the hope that he may thus
contribute to the benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to
Hoofland's German Bitters, preparedby Dr.
C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was
prejudiced t against them for many years,
under the impression that they were chieflv
an at-loholic mixture; I am indebted to mV
friend Robert Shoemaker! for the removal of
this prejudice by proper test?, and for en
couragement to try them, when suffering
from great and long continued debility. The
use of three bottles oftbeic Bitter?", at the
beginning of the present year, was followed
by evident relief, and restoration to a degree
of bodily and mental vigor which I hadnot
felt for six months before, and had almost
despaired of regaining. . I therefore thank
God and my friend for directing me to use
them. J. NEWTON BROWN.

Dr. C. M. Jack.so5 Dear Sir: While in
Virginia, owing to the change of water, I was
taken with a severe dianhoen, which seemed
incurable, and which greatly weakened nle.
When Wc reached Martinsburg, I feared that
I should have to coriie home; hut noticing
some of your Bitters in the store of .Mr. U. II.
Price, in that town, I purchase a supply, and
on taking it was speedily restored to health.
The diarrhoea was quickly checked, and J
experienced no return of it. A number of
my comrades who suffered in the same
manner and from the same cause, with whom
I shared th BiUprs, join rac in this certificate.
I expect'to return to the scat of war with the
Legion, and I Euali certainty take a supply of
the Bitters In my knapsack. I would net be
without it for its weight in gold, particularly
on going into a limestone region. -
