Mr. Leavy states that the above list is
i reliable as it was possible to make it,
under the circumstances, and his letter
goes on to say :
"The regiment left. camp on the morc
ingof the lltk 1,100 strong, and returned
on tbe 16th with 774. The great number
c casualties is attributablo to the fact
that the regiment, advancing as skirmish
ers through a dense fog', were flanked by
the enemy before our men were aware of
tbe near proximity of a foe. . We were
lubjected to a sudden enfilading fire of
wtillery and infantry, and were forced
back with the results stated. The right
wing suffered more severely than the
remainder of the regiment.
''Our forces retired to their line of in
treachments on the evening ot the 16th,
in good order, having accomplished at
least a rortion of the expedition, namely,
the destroying Lee'j communications south
f Petersburg and between that place and
Richmond. By this means all reinforce

Do You See It ? Belsano, although
quite a flourishing little village, does not
boast a post office within its corporate
limits. Thanks to an edict of. the P. O.
department, that convenience was abol
ished ssveral years ago, since which time
the Belsanoans have been obliged to-Test
content with a post office seven or eight
miles distant as the medium thro" which
to carry on their correspondence, trusting
to the precarious possibility of persons
traveling to and fro -between the two
points for "prompt delivery." Hence,
when the Johnstown Democrat charges it
upon "Major Litzinger" that he was until
lately Postmaster ofrBekano, and that, in
such capacity, he eminently failed to do
his duty, it writes itself down either a
malicious falsifier or an ignorant fool.
There cituld be no such thing as an incom
petent Postmaster, you know, without the
necessary adjunct of a Post Office wherein
to make manifest those reprehensible qual
ities of which the Democrat complain 3.
In - view of these undeniable facts, we
think an apology is rich!y due Major
Litzinger trom our cotcmporary for its
uncalled for and senseless attack.

LOCAL CORRESPOXDEXCE.
Johnstown, May 22, 1864.
Dear Alleghanian : Last week a tele
gram was received here by Sheriff Linton,
from Lieut. 2iix Kinkead, stating that
the 54th Picg't P. V. four companies of
which hail from this place had been in
an engagement near Strasburg, Va., and
had beon badly cut up. Among the cas
ualties, he. mentioned the names of CaptV
Bonaker, Graham, and Geisinger killed,
and Lieut.-Col. Linton wounded. The
most intense excitement was manifested
by our citizen? to learn the extent of the
loss, and on Friday evening several copies
of the Cumberland Union (Extra) were
received, giving a list of the killed and
wounded. The following embraces the
total loss :
Killed,
Wounded, at Cumberland
" Martinsbarg
" Left on the Field
Missinsr,
The above includes three Captains and
two Lieutenants killed, and one Lieuten
ant wounded. . Col. Linton received a
severe flesh wound in the thigh, the ball
from which has not yet been extracted.
He arrived here this morning.

The 54th went into the fight 550 strong.
It will be observed that the total loss is
174 a very large proportion in one Reg
iment. An extensive robbery was perpetrated
here last Friday morning. Two Germans
came to this place from New York for
the purpose of obtaining employment at
the Rolling Mill. They began work
about a week ago, boarding at a house
near the Iron bridge. On Friday morning,.
they started to work, as usual, but one of
them shortly returned to the house, upon
pretence of being sick. He immediately
went to the chest of liis room-mate, and
breaking it open, abstracted therefrom
1,400 in gold, a valuable gold watch, and
a passport, and then 'left for parts up
known. The other party did not discover
his loss until eveniug, when he immedi
ately telegraphed in all directions, descri
bing the robber, and offering a reward for
hU arrest. Lawyer Henning starts to
night for New York, in pursuit, as it is said
the robber intends leaving the country.
The losing German is almost crazy over
his loss.
William M'Lane, of this place, was
tried in Wheeling, Va., a few weeks ago,
for deserting from the 54th! P. V., and
sentenced to five years, at labor, in the
Tortugaa.
Joseph Moore, tcith 7tis tcie and son,
departed for Iowa last week. A great
deal of sympathy had been manifested in
his behalf hereabout, but by this unlocked
for act he deprives himself of a great
portion of it.
A son of Peter Maltze, of Conemaugh
boro', was kicked in' the face by a cirens
horse, on Wednesday, and badly injured.
Irvin Rutledge, Esq., ha9 commenced
correcting the enrollment list in Johns

From Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of

Although not disposed to favor or recom
mend Patent Medicines in general, through
distrust of the:r ingredients and effects ; I
yet know of no sufficient reasons why a man
may not testify to the benefits he believes
himself to have received from any simple
preparation, in the 'hope that he may thus
contribute to the benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to
noofland'a German Bitters, prepareoTby Dr.
C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was
prejudiced against them "for many years,
under the impression that they were chiefly
an acloholic mixture. I am indebted to my
friend Robert Shoemaker., for the removal of
this prejudice by proper tests, and for en
couragement to try them, when suffering
from great and long continued debility. The
use of Jhree bottles of these Bitters at the
beginning of the present year, was followed
by evident relief, and restoration to a degree
of bodily and mental vigor which I had not
felt for six months before, and had almost
despaired of regaining. I therefore thank
God and my friend for directing me to use
them. J. NEWTON BROWN.

Dr. C. M. Jackson Dear Sir: While in
Virginia, owing to the chauge of water, I was
taken with a severe diarihoe.i, which seemed
incurable, and which greatly weakened me.
When we reached Martinsburg, I feared that
I should have to come home ; but noticing
some of your Bitters in the store of Mr. U. 11.
Price, in that town, I purchased a supply, and
on taking it was speedily restored to health.
The diarrhoea was quickly checked, and I
experienced no return of it. - A number of
my comrades who suffered in the same
manner and from the same cause, with whom
I shared thi Bitters, join me in thi3 certificate.
I expect to return to the seat of war with the
Legion, and I shall certainly take a supply of
the Bitters in my knapsack. I would not be
without it for it3 weight in gold, particularly
on going into a limestone region.
Yours, truly, A. E. ALMEUS,
