" Attention Gentlemen. Fanny Fern thus speaks of etiquette at a table. " We commend it to the careful consideration of the entire eating community. Every word of it is true : "When I see a man at tlfc tabla U3e his kDife in taking butter from the dish, I always set him down as a 'lumpkin.' I have frequently been at watering places where a tew unsophisticated young men have been stopping, and when I have seen them take their own table knives to pro cure butter in preference to the one sup plied for the entire table, I always feel like saying right out loud, 'Young man, where's your manners V Just imagine a person eating blakbprry jam or beets with his knife, putting them into his mouth with it, and then before the faces of the entire company using the same knife in the butter from which others must take their supply. Ugh ! horrors; it makes me sick to think of it ! Then, alter he has taken his knife away, just nee him leave a great red or black streak or the butter. It makes me shudder to thiuk of it. Always use the butter knife remember that cleanliness in eatius: is as good a criterion to judge of character as neatness in dress." one s A Wife in Trouble. Tho following occurred cot many weeks ago : Pray tell me, my dear, wlitt is the cause of these tears V "Oh, such disgrace !" "What what 13 it, my dear ? Do not keep mc in suspense." "Why, I'have opened our of your let ters, supposing it addressed to myself. Certainly it looked more like Mrs. than Mr." "Is that all ? What harm can there be in a wife's opening her husbaod'a let ters ?" "No harm iu the thing itself ; but the content? ! Such a disgrace." Miss Margaret Thompson, aged about 70 years, who his been residing with James Van horn, of sard township, for some time, was found lying in the fire of 'her roouijr bhockiugby burned" and dead. Mr. Van horn, as was his custom, after rising, made a fire in her room, and went out to attend to his stock ; his wife entered the room with breakfast for Miss Thompson, who was very frail, when she discovered her lying with her head in the fire, shocking ly burned. The St. Louis Jiepullican gives an interesting report of a recent explora tion of a wonderful and beautiful cavern, called Fisher's Cave, on the Southwest Branch of the Pacific Railroad. We are assured by the author of the report, that the cave is more marvelous than the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky, being richer in the fantastic incrustations that decorate its walls and ceiling, and more thickly studded with grotesque stalactites, fctalamitcs. and similar formations. ThU remarkable cavern will yet become a favorite summer resort.
