Bgju In the somewhat famous case of
Mrs. Bogden'a will! which was tried some
years ago, Mr "Webster appeared as
counsellor for the appellant. Mrs. Green-
:6uqh,wife of the Rev. William Greenough,
late of West Newton,1 a tall, straight,
- queenly looking woman, with a keen black
eye a woman of great lf possession and
. decision of character- f as called as a
- witness on the opposite side. Webster,
at a glance,, had the sagacity to foresee
that her testimony, if it contained anything
of. importance, would have great weight
. with the jury. He therefore resolved, if
possible, to break her up, and when she
-answered the first question he put to her :
"I believe," Webster roared out, "we
don't want to hoar what you believe, wc
want to hear what you know."
., - Mrs. Greenough replied, "That. is just
. what I was about to say, sir,", and went on
with her testimony.
And, notwithstanding his repeated
' efforts to disconcert her, she pursued the
evtn tenor of her wa, until Webster,
becoming quite fearful of the result, aro?e,
' apparently iu great agitation, and, drawing
out his largo snuffbox, thrust his thumb
-and finger to the very bottom, and carrying
, tho deep pinch to both nostrils, drew it up
with gusto. -
Webster "Mrs. Greenough, wa3 Mrs.
Bogden a neat woman ?"
Mr3. Greenough "1 cannot give you
very full information as to that, sir; she
: had one very dirfy trick."
'-Webster What's that, ma'am ?"
' -Mrs. Greenough "She took snuff."
The roar of the court was such that he
'.neither rose nor spoke again till after
Mrs. Greenough had vacated her chair for
another witness.
; EjTATashington paper, commenting
'on an article in a New York cotemporary,
.gives the following romance in real life, to
. prove the assertion that courts martial do
not always arrive at correct, conclusions :
Xot'many days since, information reached
the President that a young man belonging
to , the Army of the . Potomac, had been
Kentenced by a court martial to be shot
for desertion. -The boy was doomed to
die in a few hours when the dispatch was
received. No time.wa3 to .be lost. A
telegram was sent to General Meade,
suspending the execution: An examina
tion of tho case was ordered by the Picsi-
deut, when it was ascertained that the
young una ought to have been promoted
Jong ago for gallant and inei Honour
service, instead ot being shot. It appeared
."that upon the march of the Army of the
Potomac towards'MarylaudjOu the occasion
of Lee's first raid northward, the youn
man alluled to became exhausted and fe"l
"mt of the ranks. As soon as he recovered
he proceeded on after his regiment, but
liot finding it,' and there being no time to
lose, he fell iuto .the ranks of another
regiment, and fought gallantly at South
.Mountain and Antietam, and was wounded
ia the last named battle. lie was sent to
u hospital which fact, by the absence of a
proper system in such case3, did net reach
the officers of his regiment. At . last he
was arrested a3.a deserter, tried, condemn
ed and was about to be shot, when, by the
interference of the Eexecutive, his life
Avas saved, and a young man, hastily con
demned to an ignomiuious death, was
fcuidenly restored to honor.
SU Starving out aa-enemy may at
times be a 6ure process, but iu a country
of such vast extent as rebeldom it is cer
tainly a slow one. However, signs ominous
of such a result have been visible, and
were the subject of a recent diseussiou by
a party of officers at the headquarters of
General Sherman, near Murfreuborough.
The General was not so sanguine on the
point as were many of the others, and
remarked : ...
i. "Gentlemen, don't let us be as mistaken
in this a3 I once was in "my Missouri
campaigning. The - word went out all
over the state that there was a great
scarcity cf salt; there was no salt for
meat,' nor even for bread. Because of
these reports, I was extremely cautious to
hut down on the salt trade iu my rear.
Not a bushel of salt would I pass into or
beyond my lines. In thU t thought I was
doing good service ; but imagiue my-sur-piise
arl hearty" disgust, upon entering
isnringfield, Missouri, to find that the-only
article left Lehind by Prioc and" his men
in their hastv fii-'ht, and of which I fount!
Jarge quantities there, was salt!"
