Snow ! On Friday last, we were vis
ited by the first snow of the season. On
Sunday and Monday, the flakes descended
in real midwinter style, covering the
ground to the depth of probably an inch.
At the present writing, (Tuesday,) the
ground ia still partly clothed iu white,
and "all nature wears the impress of the
dainty fingers of the Frost-King. Winter

LOCAL CORRESPONDENCE.
' - Johnstoww, Nov. 8, 1863. .
Dear AUeghaman : - The show flakes are
falling rapidly, as -1 write, covering the
earth with a mantle of white, and giving
unmistakable evidence that the Ice-King
has assumed -the sceptre, and commenced
his bleak reign. In view of ihs fact that
cold weather ia now upon us, there is a
subject which every editor should enlarge
upon, which i?, that associations should be
formed for the relief of the destitute fam
ilies of our volunteers. It is praiseworthy
to assist in relieving the privations and
sufferings of our brave volunteers, but
many a heart in the tented field will ache
to-night, by thinking, of destitute wives
and families left to the cold mercies of an
uncharitable world. There is no use in
trying to disguise the fact that (here are
many of this class in our midst, and whilst
we honor the sacrifice of husband or son,
should we not in ?orue measure alleviate
the hardship and suffering of wife or pa
rent whose sacrifices are still greater?
This is a subject which commenda itself
to the serious attention of the community
at large, and although the county provides
a pittance for these destitutes, yet the sum
is not sufficient' to meet their wants.
Whilst our volunteers in - the field are
braving the dangers and enduring the
privations of war, something must be done
the alleviate, the lot of those dependent
upon them; more real service will thus be
done our. soldiers than all the luxuries
which kind hands are monthly forwarding
for their benefit, can possibly confer. This
is rather out of the line of local correspon
dence, but the sight ef thinly-clad women
traversing our streets, with marks of
suffering in their faces, has led me to
write the above.
In the local line, nothing unusual has
transpired during the past week, and I am
at a loss to make my letter iuteresing. The
young ladies of the Catholic congregation
are making arrangements to hold" a grand
fair in their new church for the purpo?e,
I undeistand, of contributing their mite
towards its completion. From a knowledge
of the fair ones who have the matter in
hand, I havno doubt their fair will be a
success. ......
The Blaisdell Brothers, moro familiarly
known as the "Swiss Bell Ringers," are
advertised to appear at Union Hall on
Tuesday evening. Their, performances
are said to be quite interesting. . -

SnocKixa Casualty Man Killed.;
On Wednesday of lat week,' 4th inst-,:
a young man named John D. Brown, for
merly of Summerhill, this county, but
latterly a resident of Gloucester, N. J.
came to his death unjjer the following cir
cumstances: lie had gone out hunting,
alone, in the vicinity of Summerhill, on
the morning of the above day. and when
attempting to climb over a fallen tree, his
gun loaded with shoP was accidentally
discharged, the load taking effect in his
right temple, fracturing hi3 scull, and
tearing away a portion of the brain.
Strange to say, he was not instantly
killed ; when found, in the Sfternooo, he
was still living, and continued to breathe
until about 7 o'clock, when he expired.
The distressing condition of the sufferer
was first discovered unto his friends thro'
the fidelity of a dog that had accompanied
him on his ill-starred expedition. When
Mr. B. fell, the animal, with wonderful
instinct, made its way back in the direc
tion of home until it came up with two
men, whom it induced, by means of piti
ful howling and singular behavior gener
ally, to believe that something was wiongw
Accordingly, the. men followed into the
woods, the faithful dog leading the way,
and in a short time the bleeding form of
the unfortunate man was revealed to their
astounded view. Medical aid was imme
diately summoned, but the sufferer wap
declared beyond the reach of earthly skill
to heal. ' " . -
The deceased was an intelligent young
man, of a 0od moral character, and much
esteemed by a large circle of friends. His
remains were forwarded to Gloucester, N.
J. He was aged about 21 years. : .

From Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of
the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge.
Although not disposed to favor or recom
mend Patent Medicines in general, through
distrust of their ingredients and effects ; I
yet know of no sufficient reasons why a man
may not testify to the benefits he believes
himself to . have received from any simple
preparation, in the hope that he may. thus
contribute to the benefit of o'.bers.
I do this the more readily in regard to
Hoofland'a German Bitters, prepared by .Dr.
C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was
prejudiced against them for many ; years,
under the impression that they were chiefly
an acloholic mixture. I am indebted to my
friewd Robert Shoemaker., for the removal of
this prejudice by proper tests, and for en
couragement to try them, when suffering
from great and long continued debility. The
use of three bottles . of these Bitters", at the
beginning of the present year, was followed
by evident relief, and restoration to a degree
of bodily and mental vigor which I had not
felt for six months before, and had almost
despaired of regaining. I therefore thank
God and my friend for directing me to use
them. J. NEWTON BROWN.

Will build up the constitution, and give
health and strength to an overtasked and
diseased system.
Philadelphia, Augcst 12, 1862.
Da. C. M. Jackson Dear Sir: While in
Virginia, owing to the change of water, I was
taken with a severe diarrhoea, which seemed
incurable, and which greatly weakened me.
When we reached Martinsburg, I feared that
I should have to come home ; . but noticing
some of your Bitters in the store of Mr. H. H.
Price, in that town, I purchased a supply, and
on.takiSg it was speedily restored to health.
The diarrhoea was quickly checked, and I
experienced no return of it. A number of
my comrades who suffered in the same
manner and from the same cause, with whom
I shared th Bitters, join me in this certificate.
I expect to return to the seat of war with the
Legion, and I shall certainly take a supply of
the Bitters in my knapsack. I would not be
without it for its weight in gold, particularly
on going into a limestone region.
Yours, truly, . A. E. ALMEUS,
Company II, Scott Legion.
