that Teutonic beverage was not an intox

Jgy Horace Maynard, of Tennessee,
who was-at first opposed to the emancipa.
tion proclamation, in a speech in Butler
county, Ohio, recently declared himself
convinced that the President was right,
and that ho was wrong. Mr. Maynard
said that he had heard only one complaint
in Teunessee, and that was, "some of the
people are sorry the President did not in
clude that State also." The proclamation
has made the negroes our "true friends,
and their friendship is much better than
their enmity."
.t&m Some tell us that it will cost a vast
deal of money to preservo our nationality.
They are wretches who appeal to consid
erations so .mean and sordid. What would
you think of a fellow who should remind
you in your sickness that it would be very
expensive to save your life 3 And is the
life of the mightiest republic of all time
to be more higgled about than the life ot
an individual i "All that a man lias will
he give for his life." All that a man has
he should give for his county's life.
S, Illustration is frequently moro
effective than argument, and an old Penn

Curtin, understood its force when kjc
employed the following simile : "To send
my son to the war to kill rebels, and to
stay at hoaie myself to vote against the
Government, is like hitching a team of
oxen to one end of a wagon and a team of
horses to the other, when the only result
will be pulling the wagon to pieces."
