Xhe present is the season of tho sere and joW leaf: cf flovrors withered and trees denuded : of desolated prospects and dis mal eurroundings these are the "melan choly days." The red October by his ient'sita painted in his warrior-hueS, and by him lies, in peace unbent, the bow vhich ho too soon will uso. "Which means that winter will be along this way presently. Of course, many, very many poets have sung the praises of autumn as i'the harvest of the year" the "full per fection of all Nature's works" tho "chief moderator betwixt the cheek-parched sum mer and the extremes of winter's tedious frosts" still we are free to say we never could see it in exactly that light. It always has a sorrowful significance to us, lias this annual 'decay of vegetation, re minding us of man's mortality ; of how, although he put forth the luxuriant ten drils of hope and ambition for a season, he will still come to naught ; and of how the reaper of death, in the end, will gather him in gather him in gather him in as a useless cumberer of the ground. We prefer either the syrupy fragrance of summer or the crisp, tart breezes of win ter to this dismally-tasteless autumnal existence. It savors too strongly of a banquet-hall deserted, a squeezed lemon, or of an old maid of forty-odd, to prove remarkably agreeable. Tastes differ. Indian Summer has not yet como to hand. Perhaps, onceit smiles upon us, in all the glpry of a lazy-hazy atmosphere by day and night, we may think better of autumn. Just now. however, when the weather is too cool to sit comfortably in doors without fire, and the fire won't burn by reason of chimneys disordered through a summer's non-usance, we had rather be excused. We adhere to the "melan choly" idea. Talking of chimneys reminds ua that this is the season when much danger is to be apprehended from conflagrations. Chimneys are now being brought into use which wero allowed to lie idle all summer, thereby, in many cases, falling into a bad state of repair or positive insecurity. If you have not done so already, see to it that your flues aro not only good conduc tors of flame and smoke, but also" that they are safe conductors. Be particular that the inevitable "crock" occupies its proper position, and allow no portion of the pipe to como in contact with any wood-work. Attending to these sugges tions, you stand a reasonable chance of being saved from endless litigation with soulless Fire Insurance companies : neg lecting them, you may possibly waken up some fine morning and nnd ycur sole stock ia trade in thi3 world to consist of as7ics useful only as the agent through which a man may demonstrate his abhorrence of his own self (vide C. L. P. elsewhere),' as aD ingredient of soft soap. We always pity the person who never attended corn-huskings which do much abound now. Ostensibly gotten up for practical purposes, they . are in reality mere practicable than practical, and more poetical than either. We will not at tempt to further describe one than to say that the "event" of the evening is the finding of a "red ear" by a iudcie, of course which is the signal for an indis criminate and prolonged blunder, counter, or any other style of bussing of all the pretty lassies present by the lucky husker. We distinctly recollect of our always ta king with us, in our sidi coat pocket, a couple of these red ears when on huskings intent, for a self-evident purpose. Ah ! e almost wish we were" a boy again ! This by the way, however. If you never attended a corn-husking, reader, you at least most likely have read something about them. And maybe you recollect the circumstances attendant upon the going-home together of the rustic visible to the naked eye. Our coop con tinues tenantless, and its cavernsome depths echo to nary a gobble ! To put in a Thanksgiving without at the same time putting in a turkey, is an utter impossibil ity. The thing can't bo did! We dis tinctly repudiate the bare idea. Of course, we must have a turkey. And we believe that the failure thus far to supply ua with one a very large one is only an unac countable oversight- on the part of somebody,- -sWe know we have only to mention that we aro without a turkey, .when some score or more of our friends will hasten to vie with each other for the honor of sup plying tis. At least we think so I Exemptions from tiie Draft. The Synod was organized by the election of Rev. Richard Lee, of Lawrenceville, Al legheny county, Moderator,. and Rev. A. O. Miller temporary Clerk. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge. Although not disposed to favor or recom mend Patent Medicines in general, through distrust of. their ingredients and effects ; I yet know ofno sufficient reasons why a man may not testify to the benefits he believes himself to have received from any simple preparation, in the hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit of others. I do this the more readily in regard lo Iloofland'e German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced agcinstr them for many years, under the impression that they were chiefly an acloholic mixture. I am indebted to mv friend Robert Shoemaker., for the removal of this prejudice by proper tests, and for en couragement to try them, when suffering from great and long continued debility. The use of three bottles of these Bitters", at the beginning of ihe present year, was followed by evident relief, and restoration to a degree of bodily and mental vigor which I had not felt for six months before, and had- almost despaired of regaining. I therefore thank God and my friend for directing me to use them. J. NEWTON BROWN. Philad'a., Jtxk 23, lt?Gl, ATTENTION SOLDIERS! Will build up the constitution, and give health and strength to an overtasked and diseased system. " Philadelphia, Augrst 12, 1862. Dr. C. M. Ja-cksok Dear Sir : While in Virginia, owing to the change of water, I was taken with a severe diarrhoea, -which seemed incurable, and which greatly weakened me. When we reached Martinsburg, 1 feared that I should have to como home ; but noticing some of your Bitters in the store-of Mr. II. H. Price, in that town, I purchased a supply, and on taking it was speedily restored to health. The diarrhoea was quickly checked, and I experienced no return of it. A number of my comrades who suffered in the same manner and from the same cause, with whom I shared tin Bitters, join me in this certificate. I' expect to return to the seat of war with the Legion, and I shall certainly take a supply of the Bitters in my knapsack. I would not be without it for its weight in gold, particularly on going into a limestone region. Yours, truly, A. E. ALMEUS, Company II, Scott Legion. RE WARE OF COUNTERFEITS !
