One great peculiarity f the people is their mania for squatting ; they seem to do everything in this position, and even when a man is ploughing in the field he looks as if he wanted to rquat. Their habits in many things seem to be so often exactly the opposite of ours, that it almost resolves itself into a rule of contraries. When they cook a goose instead of putting the gooso on the fire, they put the fire on the goose, thus economizing fuel. In planing or Bawing a board, they plane or saw to ward themselyes instead of from them selves. AVhe'n you get into a house, you take off your shoes instead of your hat. Instead of saying John Smith, you would say Smith John. The country is rich iu fable nroductions. They have cariedthe art of making paper to great perfection. Dr. McGowan showed an orercoat made of piper, perfectly strong and serviceable. In this country we have paper cellars, but in Japan they go further, and have paper handkerchiefs, which are very beautiful and soft. After they have used a handkerchief, they throw it away, and are thus saved the .trouble of a washerwoman. They even weave their paper, and make what may be called pa per cloth of it. t- -Ilow to Head Shoulder Straps. The ranks and arm of the military offi cers nre designated as follows : The shoul der straps of a Major General bear two eilver embroidered stars, one on each end of the strap. A Brigadier General has one silver star only. A colonel has a eilver embroidered spread eagle; a Lieu tenant Colonel has two bilver embroidered leaves, one at each end of the strap; a Major has two embroidered gold leaves eimilarly placed. A captain has two sold bars at each end of the strap ; a First Lieutenant one gold bar at each end; and- a Second Lieutenant no bar at all. ...The cloth of the fctrap, by its color, distinguishes the arm of the service. For general and staff officers it is dark blue; for artillery, scarlet; for infantry, tky blue; for riflemen, green; and for cavalry, orange color. Non-commissioned officers are indicated by "chevron"," or stripes on be coat elceve, in the form of a letter V. Corpo rals wear two stripes;. Sergeants three ; Orderly Sergeants have a lozenge, or dia mond shaped figure within the angle of the chevrons. "Sergeant Majors have the threestripes of a sergeant completed into a triangle, base uppermost. . . . A CARD. Witmeu's Bridge, Lancaster Tp. July 30, 1860. Messus. Evaks axd Watsox: Gentlemen The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which I purchased from your agent, Mr. Adam R. Ba.-r, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 1858, has been subjected to a very severe test, which it withstood in a most satisfactory manner. Thi3 Safe, containing all my book3 together with Yaluable papers belonging to myself and some to my neighbors and friends, and represeting a value of over Twenty Thous and Dollars, ($20,000) was in my Mill which was destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju- ly, 13G0, and passed tnrougn me nery orucui unscathed. The Safe wasonthe second floor and fell to the basement of the Mill, and was subjected for 6ix hours to an intense heat among the rui.is, which was greatly increased by the combustion of alarge quantity of grain confined within the brick walla. After the fire the safe was opened and the books and papers taken out in a state of perfect preser vation, the paper not even being discolored. This fact was, however, to many bystanders a better recommendation of your Sa'cs than could be expressed in any other words from me.
