CDr. Lawson's plyoljiau lia4 the
dreadful ' habit ot , profane swearing.--
LirsO: oonattlted' him once uboyt hi
health. The physiciatf, wearinS; ?aid ; ;
: "Sir,' you are the slave of a bad bauit,
and you will not soon recover miles you
give it up." . .
"Andhatb tho habit?" said Law-
son. '
Smoking," replied the other..
"Well" said Lawson, "I can abandon
tho pipe ; but will you permit me to give
vou a hint, too, aa to a vile habit of yoar
own?"
"What is that ?"
"I refer to your habit ol profane swear
ing," replied the devine. - .
"True," Eaid the doctor; "but that is
not an expensive habit, like yours."
"Ah,- sir," eaid Lawtoi, 4iyou will
discover it to be a very expensive habit
indeed when the account is hauled to
you." , ,
Witness TnriEE. Shortly before he
died, Patrick Henry, laying Lis baud ou
the Bible, said?
"Here is a boox worth .more than all
others, yet it is my sad misfortune never
to have rend it, until lately, with proper
attention."
With voice-ond iresture pertinent, and
all his own, Johu Umdolph said :
"A terrible proof of our deep depravity
is that mo can relish and remember any
thing: better that the Bjok."
-When the shades of death were gather
ing around Sir Walter Scott, he said-to
the watcher, "Bring the Book."
"What book?" asked Lockhart, his
son-in-law.
"There i3 but one Book," paid the dy
ing man.' With such testimony as to the
Tallin of the Sacred Scriptures, reiterated
by the great aud good, ia all aes, it is yet
a sealed book to nrany.
When the great American aloe,
bel onif ingjto Mr. Van llenelaer, of Al
bany, having been in New-York on exhi
bition, was ou its way up the river, under
the care ot the gardener or keeper, a gen
tleman, struck with the beauty of the plant,
made many inquiries regarding it. In
the course 'of the passage, the inquirer
remarked, -
"This plant belougs to the cictus family,
does.it not, .ir?"
"No, sir ; it belongs to the Van Rensse
laer family, ' was the reply of the straight
lor ward attendant. -
. Three Chicago ladies were visit
ing together, and each had her baby, a six
months' old girl, with light hair aud blue
tyes. 'The little one.- were laid down to
sleep on a bed, while the mothcis took
tea; and some miachievous young fellow,
who boarded in the house, changed ail
the infants' clothing. The mistaken iden
tity was not discovered until morning,
and: the anxious matrou suffered much
Consternation and several journeys in sort
ing out their children.
Jennie sighed, and Kobin seized
her pretty little trembling hand; then
with clasping arms he squeezed her half
reluctant furui,and and "Loose ine'."
but he clasped the tighter; "Jennie, say,
wilt thou be mine?" then her bri'jht
face grew much 'brighter, and she whis
pered, "I ain thine I" Then they clashed
each other fondly, cloie together as two
bricks, and they kissed each other sound
ly, and we left 'em in that fix.
Sg'-You can do anything if you only
have patience," &aid an old uncle, who
had made a f'-.rtune, to a nephew who had
nearly spent one. "Water may be carried
in a seive, if you cm only wait "
"How long?" asked the petulant spend
thrift, who was impatient for. tie old
man's obfcuary.
"Till it freezes J' was the unelc's cool
reply.
23, Quilp and his wife had a bit of
convention the oihcr day, "I own you
have more brilliancy than I," said the
woman, --but I have the better judg
jient." "Yes," said Quilp, "our choice of mar
riage would show that."
Counsel "Now, sir, on yo ir oath,
were you. not born in Pennsylvania?"
Witness, in a solemn tone "Although
? resent at the event,. I swear on my oath
have no leeolketion of the fact."
