icarion, I hinted
nteinpcrance, and
c men to bestir
deadly progress.
I wilt now notice
1 couceive, of iu-
' J. -iJSusrircst a remedy.
2iLSfs--ijCeat . causo is found in the
lSthc law legalizes it. Instead, of
JT'6hibiting it, altogether, ,as it does other
great crimes, aud lunictin-jj a severe pen
alty upon-the transgressor, it seeks to
regulate the crime and draws from it a
revenue. This principle is so palpably
false and wrong that it only needs to be
considered to be . condemned' by every
right thinking man. The idea of a Chris
tian community, professing to be founded
upon the principles of right and justice,
enacting laws to regulate a great crime,
and make that crime a source of profit, is
wicked1 in the extreme. "Why not make
laws regulating murder, adultery or theft ?
Doubtles3 these couldundrr proper en
actments, be made a great source of profit
to a Commonwealth. "Will a just God
continue to bless us if we continue to act
upon a principle that is coutrary to every
attribute of His? "Shall the throne of
iniquity have fellowship with thee, which
frameih iniquity by a law V .
.But notwithstanding the false founda
tion upon which our legal euactmeuts rest,
iu reference to this subject, there are
many engaged in !this traffic who shield
themselves behind our statutes. In vain
may we appear to such men to desist, so
long as they can answer, "I pay for my
license.". , i . ; - .'
I assign as a second reason that the
existing enactments are not, in many in-
"stances, enforced. Hence, many, parts of
the country are dotted over by grog shops,
kept by unprincipled men, without license,
who deal out indiscriminately the worst
kind of tangtefoot, simply to make money."
Hence, too, we find tneu by the wayside
and in public places, even upon the Sab
bath, reeling under the influence of the
intoxicating bowl, belching forth blasphe
my and vulgarity enough to pale the face
of morality and virtue. .The officials of
our wards and townships, by the way,
heem to have a peculiar way of not know
ing that these things exist.
The third and last reason that I will
ossign at this time is, that this evil is not
viewed with that degree of condemnation
by ms-jy ot the virtuous and upright
which its magnitude demands., lhe evil
has been so long upon us that we have
beeome familiar with it. We are like the
Israelites of old, who tolerated idolatry so
lonpr amongst them that they lost that
loly horror of it the law of God bad first
inspired, and many fell victims to tne
' revolting practice. This evil approaches
us as the nattering insect does the indus
trious bee hive, where it de pontes the egg
that brings forth toe destroying canker
worm, and where the unsuspecting family
a!low it to remain until it has completed
the work of death. Alapy think it impo
lite to refuse to take a glass with a friend,
and thus that fric-ud is encouraged in that
which is last working his ruin. Parents
hIIow their children to go where strong
drink is dealt out, and to associate .with
those who use it. Is it any wonder that
many of them become drunkard, when
t ev are thus being educated to it ' Yir-
tous young ladies look with. complacency
upon yourg men who are often found
quaffing the intoxicating cup. Is it any
wonder the young men lo not regard trie
practice as a bad one when it is uncon
deinncd by their fair companions ?
A word as to the remedies for this evil,
and it requires but a word, because to
peak of the caue3 suggests the remedy.
1 contend we should bring temperance
into politics. ly this I' do not mean to
my that there should be a distinct politi
cal organization, with the one idea of
temperance. Uut let the subject be bro't
to bear upon cxi&ting parties. Let every
temperauce man resolve, nnd let that res
olution be made known, that he will giva
bis suffrage to no man who sanctions by
bis practice this monstrous evil.. Let
them bring their influence to bear at the
primary elections of their respective par
ties, aud elsewhere, and we-will soon see
a change in lhe character of the men who
are elevated to ' place and power. It is a
burning shameupon this nation and this
State that our congressional and legisla
tive balls are often swayed by the stormy
passions of the inebriate. Let there be
Te.Tipefance Leagues formed for the dis
pemiiiution of tempe-ance principles and
the-enforcement-of. the present statutes
upon the subject. Let tfce'youui lady,
as she values her own happiness and that
of ses, indignantly spurn' from her
fcidc tne young man who frequents the
lager-beer saloon, and whoo brCath is
polluted with the pei fumes- ef strong
drink, finally, let each one, male or fe
male, who regards the present and eternal
nappinca of mankind, bear an unwavering
testimony on the side of temperance and
virtue. Then may we hope that this li
quid stream of death may be checked--the
dark beverage of hell dried up and
many unfortunate victims saved,
Howard.
