tho diviuity of slavery. He tulki a sreat

ularmed at the bankrupting flood" of
green-backs. He calls tho Southerner!

nurious and fanatical. Ho thinka the
soldiers haven't cny right. to note. He
doubts whether Iloseeraus was victorious
at Murfrcesbc.ro, and don't ca.ro whether
he was or not. You can tell him nt u

board, for the flash of patriotic joy is
absent from his eye, as the news of a
brilliant -victory U heralded from the
Army of tho ItepubMe, wh'ile the intelli

exclamation you can jitter subjugate the
South.
BsC In his new lecture, Artemas Ward
makes some fun of Dr. NVinship, the New
England "strong man," who advertises
that he will lift twelve able bodied men,
at one time, at the close of his lecture.
Artemas travesties the muscular New
Knglander by facetiously inviting twelve
agreeable young ladies on the platform,
stating that he will lift them, one at a
time, or "perish in the attempt." 'This
is very g;ood ; but out in India, at a
town rejoicing in the name of Nolan, tho
pirls rather more than got even with him,
for when he extended the aforesaid invi
tation, twelve fair damsels arose and sol
emnly advanced to the platfortn and de
murely arranged themselves to be "lifted."
The audience gave a regular Hoosier
6cream, but the Showman failed to see
anything particularly funny about it. He
didn't lift' 'em !
JR2yA gentleman of nervous tempera
ment once called on Dr. Dwight, Presi
dent of Yale College. One of the
doctor's boys was rather boisterous aud
pestered the nervous gentleman somewhat
whereupon he said to him, "My boy,
if you will keep still while I am talking
to your father, I will give you a dollar."
Instantly the boy hushed down, gently as
a bleeping lamb. At the close of the
gentleman's remarks, he attempted to
leave without giving the . boy the
'lollar; but Dr. Dwight was too fast for
Eim. He put a dollar into the mau's
hands, saying. "You promised my boy a
dollar for good behavior. Give that as
yoUj promised. If, sir, we lie, our child
ren will be liars."
Proverbs. A white clove often
conceals a dirty band. The remedies for
injuries, is not to remembtr them. Be a
friend to yourself and others will. Go to
the country to lrear news of the town.
Be not a baker if your head is not made
of butter. -Call ma a cousin but cozea me
not. - Faint praise is disparagement.
Ask thy purse what thou shouldst buy.
Zeal without knowledge, is like firwit fl
out light. Youth and white pnpe'roon
take an impression. Vows made iriijrms
are forgotten in calms. The CMrWfi is
out of tempcr.when- charity is Cwd -and
zeal hot. The sting of reproach' is the
truth of it. Envy shoots at others, and
wounds herself. A goose quill is more
dengerous than a lion's claw.
A resolution was introduced in the
Senate onThursday, calling on the Secre
tary of "War for a letter written io him by
(Jen. Scott, Oct. 4, 1861. The Xew York j
Times says :
"This letter ill show that Geucral
M'CIellan treated Gen. Scott with pcrbon.il
disrespect while the latter.wasCommaudcr-in-chief
to such an extent that a court
martial would havp been demanded .but
for fear of injury which the .consequent
revulsions would do the cause in howing
insubordination in an officer officii rauk.
It also shows Gcu. Scott's determination
to resign liis position as soon as General
Halleok should have arrived from Califor
nia, to aid the government with his couu
fcels and inllucnce.

The small size No. I Salamander safe bich
I purchased from your agent, Mr. Adam It.
Ba.T, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 1856,
has been subjected to a very severe test,
which it withstood in a most satisfactory
manner. Thi3 Sife, containing all ray books
together with ra'.aible papers belonging to
myself and some to my neighbors and friends,
andrepreseting-a value of over Twenty Thous
and Dollar":, ($20,000) was in my Mill which
was destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju
ly, 1SG0, and passed through the fiery ordeal
unscathed. The Safe was on the second floor
and fell to the basement ofthe Mill, and was
subjected for six hours to an iutense . heat
among the rui.is, which was greatly increased
by the combustion of a large quantity of grain
confined- within the brick walls. After the
fire the safe was opened aud the books aud
papers taken out in a state of perfect preser
vation, the paper not even being discolored.
This fact was, however, to many bystanders
a better recommendation of your Sares than
could be expressed in anj other words from
me. Yours Respectfully,
Oel3 - SAMUEL ItANCK.
