Duryea, while he was station fcd at Baltimore, as the brigadier command ing. He addressed a note to a person who had ordered a petty farmer upon his land, some nine miles from town, to haul down the national flag. The father-in-law of this man, a president of one of the banks, waited on the General to know whether he had written the note. "I did," said the General. "Are you the person V "No ; I am his father-in-law." "I give you thirty minutes to produce your son-in-law in this omce I "But General!" ' "Thirty minutes, sir, thirty minutes!" iThe two came al the appointed time, and the offender confessed that he had commitcd the offence against the flag. "You must, both of you, take the oath," said the General, "and I give you, sir, two hours to hoist that flag upon the same epot where it was pulled down." "But General ?" "Two hours, sir, two hours, or you both go to Fort McIIenry !" The flag went up at the appointed time, and there it has floated ever since, and the two are new sworn Union men. i-The following beautiful thoughts are from the pen of George D. Prentice : "There is but a breath of air and a beat of the heart, betwixt this world and the next. " And in the brief interval of pain ful and awful suspense, while we feel that death is present with us, and that we are powerless and he all powerful, and the last Jmlsation here is but the prelude of end ess life hereafter ; wc feel in the miJUt of the stunning calamity about to befafi us, that earth has no compensating good to mitigate tlie severity of our loss. But there is no grief without some beneficent provision to soften its intenseness. When the good and the lovely die, the memory ot their deeds, like the moonbeams on the stormy sea, light our darkened hearts, and lend to the surrounding gloom, a beauty eo sad, so sweet, that we would not if we could, dispel the darkness that environs it." JC6? A crowd collected around a dilap idated specimen of humanity near the corner of Fifth and Sycamore streets, to ascertain what he had lost. :,G, darn it, I've lost some money," was the' reply. One ot the party immediately got a liht, and after searching for a long time, he turned to the lookers on and assistants and remarked. "1 don't care a darn for the cent ; I just wanted to see where it would roll to." Yankee escaped a thrashing by using bis legs. fcg,"I would i were a Uuy again," as the old cask said when they were tarring it preparatory to pitching it into the bon fire. WlTMEP.'s BCIPGE, Lancaster Tp. July 30, 18G0. Messrs. Evans and Watson: Gentlemen The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which I purchased from your agent, Mr. Adam R. oa-r, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, lSoS, has been subjected to a very severe test, which it withstood in a most satisfactory manner, lhis hnfe, containing all my books together with valti xble papers belonging to myself and some to my neighbors aud friend?, and represcting a val le of over Twenty Thous and Dollars, (20,000) was in my Mill which was destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju ly, 18G0, and passed through the fiery ordeal unscathed. The Safe was on the second tloor and fell to the bascmeut of the Mill, and was subjected for six hours to 'an intense heat among the rui.is, which was greatly increased by the combustion of a large quantity of grain confined within the brick walls. After the fire the safe was opened and the books and papers taken out in a state of perfect preser vation, the paper not even being discolored. This fact was, however, to many bystanders a better recommendation of your Safes than could be expressed in any other words from me. Yours Respectfully, sel3 SAMUEL RANCK.
