' Tiie Tax on Touacco. T he heavy tax on tobacco imposed under the internal revenue law, i3 already beginning to be felt here, and a considerable falling off in the dem and for the article is experienced. Our readers have but a faint idea of the extent to which this tax must effect the tobacco trade ; but when we state that under the law some of our manufacturers will have to pay 8200 a day to the Gov ernment, they will be better able to arrive at an intelligent conclusion on the subject. There is another thing, too, which will :. operate against the manufacturers, unless I their whole syste.ii of business be revolu tionized. They generally give a credit of four months on their sales, but under the law they are required to make returns ev ery month to the collector. They will thus be compelled to pay the tax long be fore they receive payment for the tobacco, a thing which, considering the great amount, will be out of the questiou. The result of this will be, they will have to do a cash business exclusively, or none at all. ' " -fr- : E, A country schoolteacher, prepa ring tor an exhibition of his school, selfc ted a class of pupils, and wrote down the questions, which he would put to them on examination day. The day came, and so came the young hopefuls, all but one. The pupils took their places, as had been arranged, and all wont on glibly until the question came for the absentee, when the teacher asked : '"In whom do you believe r'" "Napoleon Bonaparte " "You believe ia the Jloly Catholic Church, do you not?" "So," said the pupifauiid roars of laughter, the boy who believe3 in the Church hasn't come to'school to-day ; he i3 home sick abed." 57 The following ringing sentence is from the conclusion of a lute sermou of Henry Ward IJeeeher : "I am not a prophet. I am njt san guine, though hopeful. I think victory awaits U3 at every step, but if God thinks victory too dear to be purchased so cheap ly wc can give everything, but this country bhall be one, and ono undivided. The Atlantis and the I'aciiic shall sayjt, deep answering "deep. "Hear it, England, one. people, one Constitution, and one Government. Oae God, one couTitry, one flag and one de6tin cost what it may we will have it. Let God name the price and it shall be paid." C3? A" young fellow of our acquain tance, whose better" half had jut present ed him with a pair of bounciug twins, attended Rev. .Mr. 's church "on on last Sunday evening. During the discourse, the -clergyman looked right at our innocent friend, and said in a tunc of thrilling eloquence : "Young man-you have an important - responsibility thrust upon you." The new fledged dah dah supposing that the preacher alluded to his peculiar home event, considerably startled the audience by replying: "Yes, I have two of them." jpjii work.
