The Drafted Militia. The much
talked of, reasonably dreaded Draft of
Militia was made throughout the Slate
on Thursday, some two hundred being
drawn in this county alone. No undue
excitement was manifested, but, on the
contrary, every thing was conducted with
dignity and decorum. Commissioner Harr
was present, and superintended the deli
cate operation. Constable O'Neill acted
as assistant, and, blinuloluea, urew inu
required number of names from the wheel.

heroes has fallen ! Corporal Evan P.
James, of Co. A, 11th Penn a. Reserves,
whose parents reside in Cambria town
ship, died in hospital at Philadelphia on
Thursday last, of typhoid fever. II is re
mains were brought here on Saturda, and
on Sunday committed to their last resting
place. At his death, the deceased was in
full bloom of vigorous vouth, some 23
years old we should think, and much be
loved by his many friends and acquain
tances. The illness resulting in his death
was a long and painful one, extending
over a period of three months. He, iu
common with ihe regiment to which he
belonged, was captured by ihe Rebels at
the bloody battle of Gaines' Hill, before
Richmond, tlt-e long and tedious confine
ment ensuing engendering the seeds of
disease in his frame. Thus is the respon
sibility resting upon the leaders of the
Slaveholders' Rebellion cause of untold
misery, sorrow aud death day by day
enhanced. "Vengeance is mine, saith the
Lord 1 will repay."

Teachers' Institute. Pursuant to a
call published last week, the Teachers'
Institute met in Johnstown, on Wednes
day, 15th inst., and continued in session
three days. About forty members were
in attendance a very perceptible diminu
tion of tlie number present during the
meeting last April. Prof. Rates, Deputy
State Superintendent, who was present,
delivered several highly instructive aod
interesting lectures upon matters pei tattl
ing to a Common School Education. The
subject of Physical Education, which has
hitherto been sadly neglected, was dwelt
upon at length by him, nnd the necessity
of some exercises tending to develop the
muscles of the human frame being intro
duced into our schools, was fully impressed
upon the minds of those present. In
short, the Institute passed off very credi
tably, those present showing the irreatest
willingness "to be learnt," while a corres
pondingly obliging disposition was shown
by several ot the more experiencod teach
ers in demonstrating their different modes
of "teaching the young 'ideo' to shojt."
