BY THE WAT SEWS IS GENERAL.
Camp Chase, Va., August 23, 1862.
Correspondence of The Allegbanian
Last Tuesday wo bade adieu to Camp
Curtiri, and feiads a rapid journey to Bal
timore. The scenery along the route is
extremely . romantic and beautiful not
that the mountains are Alpinic in bight,
or the plains of boundless extent, but be
cause the placid waters of the Susquehan
na, rippling and glancing in the distance
as you rapidly pass by, and the verdure
covered summits of the ranges of hills
basking in the sunlight cannot fail to
pleaee the eye of any lover of Nature. -As
you near Baltimore, the fine country
villas of the residents of that city meet
you at every turn of the road. Embow
nred in foliage, and beautified by both na
ture and art, one would almo3t imagine
he could luxuriate here forever,, delight
fully oblivious of aught in the world be
tide. If you sre a soldier, you get off at the
depot, and are marched to the Union Re
lief Association of the city, where you get
good soldier's supper. In Ilarrisburg
we stopped &t the Pennsylvania House,
and at Washington we had breakfast in
the Government building provided for
that purpose, but I must say that at Bal
timore we had better "grub" than at either
of the other places. The universally ex
pressed opinion of the boys is, that the
Association is a big thiog for hungry vol
unteers.
Arrived in Washington city, we were
marched to Camp Chase, in-Virginia, five
miles distant, where we are now encamped.
We are on a portion of Gen. Leu's planta
tion. Ilercis where yea can see some of
ravages of war fences torn down, acres of
woodland felled and now thick with un
tlerbrush meadow-land' running to waste.
and the country on every side a sad pic
ture of desolation ! Forts of great strength
dot the surface at every available point,
arid ever and anou your ears are greeted
with the heavy boom of cannon. Iu the
middle of our camp are the remains of a
breastwork used some time ago probably
last summer a.s a protection to the Union
forces. Close by is the road on which
that splendid army of M'Dowell's marched
forth to Manassas, and on which they re
turned discomfkted and bleeding.
The men are rapidly becoming accus
tomed to camp life,, and if we remain here
tny length of time, will soon be in tip-top
trim. As a general thine:, the health of
the wmpany is excellent. One or two
are slightly unwell, but under the cEcient
treatment of our Captain, will doubtless
soon recover.
A word as to our company : When
passing through Ilarrisburg, we were re
peatedly informed that ours was the finest
company thus far that had passed into
CampCurtin. . Without being in the least
egotistical, I believe the remark applica
ble. I have seen some fifteen . thousand
troops, anil in no one instance could I find
an entire company whose tout ensemble ex
relled that of the "Mountain Guards."
Do not think, Mr. Editor, that I am self
laudatory. Who can for one moment not
le proud of our noble little county, and
feel a flush of honest exultation wheu he
knows that, with only four to five thous
and voters, she has sent over two thousand
picked men into the field ?
The weather here is quite warm, with
prospects of a rain. The following are
the present regulations of our camp:
Reveille at 5 a. m. ; squad drill from o
to 6 ; company drill from G to 7 ; break
fast j guard mounting from 8 to 0; offi
cers' drill from 9 to 10 ; from 10 a. m. to
3 p. m., dinner and letters to sweethearts;
$ to 4, squad drill; 4 to ;", dress parade;
mppcr; 8J, roll-call; 9, tattoo.
Yours, Ac, ' Cambrian.

TriE Draft. The enrollment of the
militia iti this county, under the superin
tendence of A. C. Mullin, Esq., Commis
sioner appointed for that purpose by Mar
shal Murdoch, of th Western District of
Pennsylvania, is progressing rapidly.
Sub-commissioners have been appointed to
canvass the various election district?, and
the indications now are that the job will
be completed in a couple of days.
The following notice is served by the
Deputy Marshal upon every person en
rolled :
Office of the United States Deputy Marshal, for
the countv of Cambria, at Ebensburg, August
22, 1862."
To Johr. Doe: Take notice that you hare
heeu enrolled as a citizen within the (East
Ward) of (Ebensburg Borough,) in the said
county, liublb to Military service.
If you claim exemption from any cause, the
claim will be received und determined by the
Commissioner to be appointed for that pur
pose for this county, at such time and place
as he shall specify by handbills to be posted
in said (East Ward .J
, Deputy Marshal.
Besides the names of those liable to
military duty, the sub-Commissioners are
also instructed to return the names of
such persons from their respective dis
tricts who may have previously entered
the United States service, whether now in
service, discharged or dead, together with
the company and regiment in which they
enlisted and the name of the commanders
thereof. This is done, in accordance with
an order of the War Department, that in
filling requisitions for the militia all coun
ties aud subdivisions of counties may re
ceive credit for all volunteers heretofore
furnished them. By this means, the au
thorities will know exactly where and how
much to draft.
Those districts which have already fur
nished their quotas will not be disturbed
as of course they should not be ; while
those which have shirked their duty will
be required to toe the mark.
-Col. John M. Power, of the 7Cth
Pennsylvania Volunteers, arrived home at
Johnstown last week, direct from Hilton
Head, S. C. He has been obliged to re
sign his command on account of ill health.
The Lt. Colonel of the regiment has also
resigned on the same account.
Another company the third un
der the late requisitions left Johnstown
on Sunday morning. We did not learn
the names of the officers. Johnstown' is
doing nobly !
The new engine house at the Eb-
ensburg depot of tho E. & C. RR. has
been completed. It is an excellent struc
ture, and cost 1,500.
Godey for September is received.

Good News I We take pleasure in
informing our citizens that Roraback's
Patent Compound Chemical Toilet and
Washing Soapa are now introduced in
Ebensburg, where all who desire to test
their good qualities lor washing purpose
hate an opportunity of so doing afforded
them free of charge. These soaps have
had a severe trial of over two months in
Johnstown, this county, where they stand
the ne plus ultra of all soaps, as their sales
will prove. Over one hundred family and
eight store Tights have been sold, there
within the last few weeks. Our citizens
now have a chance to try the soaps tor
themselves, and if the town is not sol I by
Sept. 3d, family rights will be offered as
follows: Single rights, $5; Clubs of
ten, 4 ; Fifty, and upwards, $3 ; Store
rights, 10 each. County, township and
family rights for sale.
Read the following recommendations :
We, the undersigned, having used iu and
purchased the right to make Roraback's Pat
ent Soaps, cheerfully recommend them as far
superior to anything we have ever used, and
believe that their use is indispensable to. the
comfort of every family, hotel and laundry.
Signed by R. P. Linton, Jacob Fronheiser,

Mitchell, Adam Fockler, Charles Zimmerman,

and many others.
Ebexsrcrc. Attgutt 25, 18G2.
To Mr. J. M. Acstin
This is to certify that I have been made
acquainted with the components of which
Roraback s Compound Chemical toilet and
Washing Soaps are prepared, ,and I do assert
that the combination is an elegant one, and
cannot be in the least injurious when used to
cleanse the most delicate fabric, and that it
may be used with perfect safety and success
for all purposes for which other soaps may be
used as a cleansing agent.

At Home. We are glad to chronicle
the arrival in our midst of Mr. John Rob
erts, of Co. A, 11th Penna. Reserves, who
has been detailed on recruiting service at
this point. He was present at and par
ticipated in the several engagement on
the Peninsula before Richmond, tmtil the
battle of Gaines' Kill, 27 th June, when
he, in common with his company, was ta
ken prisoner by the Rebels. He under
went a captivity of some five or six weeks
at the hands of the chivalry, when he was
exchanged. He gives a highly interest
ing account of Rebel prison life, and al
though not charging any direct complaint
of neglect or cruelty against them, he still
insists that he would prefer entering Rich
mond next time in the midst of a victori
ous Federal arm v. His health, which was
rather bad on his arrival, is rapidly iro
proving, and now, after undergoing scores
cf privations and perils in behalf of the
Union, his is once mere on his "native
heath." and almost as good as new. Suc
cess to you, forever, John 1
