Sinoclah Young Rseei. Woman'.
It ssripesrs that Prentice's denunciations
of secession and its leaders haa so pro
voked the aiders and ablet tors, that evea
the rebel girls are suulbin.ir him in the
public thoroughfare. He tries to turn
the table upon one of his fair persecutors
in the following manner:
As we were passing- alonjr the street
two dsys ago in our usual quiet way.
musing upon ''the storms of the State"
nud pondering upon our solemn respor.'-'i-riilitv
in this rreat crisis cf i'nu affairs of
the nation and of mankind, a very pretty
young woman, whom we had understood
to be a Gory young rebel, and even a ter
rible villifier of the Louisville Journal.
was about meeting u. when, turning of?
from the sidewalk, she protruded her red
and tempting lip.-? at us boldly and defi
antly. ' Oh, certainly we will, if you
want us to very bad, though indeed this
13 rather too public a place." said we with
our accustomed snavitv, advancing toward
mi
her with our lips correspondingly protru
ded, when to our no little disappointment
and surprise, she started and ran away
from us as if ve had been some ugly old
fellow of forty.
Now, if that coquettish young creature
really presunTcJthat we, occupying the
position we $ p'!d consent, for the
sake of a kiss,Vvursii2 her at full speed
through the streets of a large city like
this in broad daylight, she was never
rnore mistaken in her life. We as keenly
nopreeiare a ki.?, that nectarcd sweetness,
that double mouthed rapture, thatsqail t
ecstacy, that blazing contact of mated
hearts meeting upon the lips, that sudden
bursting forth of Uvo seals into a single
blossom, as any ether enthusiastic young
man on earth, but at the same time, we
have a pride, a dignity, a self-respect, and
even a regard for the world's '-conven-tionalities,"
that we would not neriuce
for all the kies that ever thrilled and
bewitched the sleeping visions and waking
dreams of youth and beauty and loveliness
and lore.
Now we tell that young rebel that she
asks for a kiss in the wrong way, that she
asks for it at the wrong place and time,
and that she doesn't seem to know how
. . i j
have no uisnosttion to say more, and even 1
our high regard for almighty crinoline
could no induce us to say loss.
Always Taile Gooi Advice. Coun

defence. A robber being surprised in

of Justice, it was resolved to proceed

however allotted to the prisoner for

"It is true, sir," said the culprit;
but

"Hush !" said the counsel, "the very
best counsel I can uivo you is to run away
as fast as you esn."
The robber profited by this advice, and
ran off by the back stairs. The counsel
returned to the bar, ami was asked by the
first president what he had to ay in be
half of his paity.
"Gentlemen," answered the .advocate,
"the wretch confessed to me his crime,
and r.s he was not guarded", and I was
named to tve him my best advice, I have
advised Llni to run away. He has fal
lowed my advice."
Much laughter arose ; for norhingcould
be said against the advocate. It belonged

which it withstood in a most satisfactory
manner. Tins S t'e, containing ail my books

and represeting a val ie of over Twenty Thous

was destroyed on the vgl:t of the 27th of Ju

unscathed. The Safe was on the second lloor
an ! fell to the basement of the Mill, and was
subjected for six hours to an intense heat
among the rui.is, which was greatly increased
by the combustion of a large quantity of grain
confined within 'he brick walls After the
