ANNOUNCEMENT OF
PARSON BROWNLOW'S BOOK.
The subscriber is aJjout publishing a nar
rative of the perils, adventures, and sufferings
F the Rev. W. G. Bsowstow among the
secessionists of Tennessee. The manuscript
3 nearly completed, and -will be put to press
forthwith. The appearance and typographv
of the work will bo of the first class ; "and it
will fee fully aud handsomely illustrated with
sketches of the scenes referred to and a finely
engraved steel portrait of the auttor.
As to its contents, we have no hesitation
in saying that the public will be startled ut
this narrative of facts. It will lay hare the
persecutions and cruelty which marked the
development of the secession conspiracy in
Tennessee, the disasters and the ruin with
which it devastcd communities once prosper
ous and sundered families once happy ; m-tre
than all, it will expose the bad aud "reckless
ambition, and the relentless bloodthirstiuess,
It j which the ringleaders of the conspiracy
were stimulated to their work of crime and
treason.
The narrative is one of personal experiences.
The author vouches for the accuracy of its
statements; The public may therefore accept
it as not only a reliable but a peculiar chap
ter ia the general history of the times : and
we are confident that no more significant
startling, or instructive memorial of the re
bellion, in its minute personal and social bear-,
ing3, is now accessible.
The public are well aware that Mr. Dnow.v
row is a bold speaking man. In this narra
tive of his sufferings, composed mostly while
confined in the jail at Knoxvill", he ha3 ut
tered his thoughts in language of extraordi
nary force and fearlessness, scathing his ad
versaries even while ia their power, an',
appealing to his countrymen even from Lis
cell with the urgency of a martyr.
It will be published in one volume, l2mo,
fully illustrated, of about 40 0 pages, at $1.23.

PREFACE.
These sketches were written to lessen the
tcd'nya of my lengthy imprisonment ; and if
they serve to recall to my pri.?on-conip.tniou3
th scene3 enacted in the old Warehouse, and
eulist the interest and sympathies of the
reader, they .will have accomplished a!l that
i desired by the publication of them. With
the exception of "Homeward IJoouil," they
were nil written within prison walls, and
brought to th" North sewn Securely in the li
ning of an overcoat.
I confidently trust to my brother-officers
for thpir testimony as to the fidelity of the
description of our "domestic economy," and
the accuracy of detail in the varied incidents
in our prison life in the Tobacco Wareheu-e.

Messrs. 'Evans and Watson: Gentlemen
The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which
I purchased from your agent, Mr. Adam R.
Ea-r, in Lancaster Cityn July 20th, 1838,
has been subjected to a very severe test,
which it withstood in a most satisfactory
manner. This Safe, containing all my booksx
together with va'u ible papers belonging to
myself and some to my neighbors and friends,
aud representing a val re of over Twenty Thous
and Dollars, ($20,000) was in my Mill which
was destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju
ly, S(U), And passed through the fiery ordeal
unscathed. The Safe was on the second fioor
and fell to the basement of the Mill, and was
subjected for six hours to an intense heat
among the rui.is, which was greatly increased
by the combustion of a large quautity of grain
confined within 'die brick walls. After the
fire the safo was opened and ihe books and
papers taken out in a state of perfect preser
vation, the paper not even being discolored.
This fact was, however, to many bystanders
a better recommendrt lion of your Safes than
could be expressed in any other t. ords from
me. Yours Respectfu'.lv,
