u r X. 'i -X i i V - s i 11 'J "I VI 11 ' - - i. I' -. i i Story of a Uerusec. Correspondence of the Cincinnati Times. - Mr. Nelson It. A. Riddle, a merchant of Philadelphia, who minted his wife in ffoxrfinnnh. Georgia, an J who left there on the 2d, inst., ha3 just Arrived here b way i of 2i hviile, Rowling Green, ana Jou.a villi.-. Mr. Riddle had crreat di3k-ulty in act tin- oucut Savannah, having labored, vry iaihfrtliv, hut in Tain, to do so for several j irv 1 1 l t h -4 Mr. Middle describes the alarm and panic at Savannah, after the Federal at tack on Port Royal, as most extraordina ry. Fear seized 'every one, aud ail the citizens fled from the place. The city W. n.T protection or defence whatever, all the guns, ammunition and cannon j having been sent to Virginia. There ! were no soldiers there but one regiment, j which was encamped near the town, tem porarily, on its way to Virginia. During the residence of my informant in Savannah, there were two or three drafts for soldiers, and he was compelled to furnish two substitutes for the Rebel army, one of whom, an ex-lumber mer chant of Maiue, was the most violent Se cessionist in the place. The South, lie believes, has all the force in the field that it can possibly raise, having made the most determined and persistent efforts to famish men and money for the cause. The people have been most severely taxed; and those at all suspected of Union sentiments or procliv ities, have been forced tifcoutribute enor mous sums. Many of tin; merchants and professional men have bfcni impoverished bv the exactions of the 'Confederacy." " The strongest and boldest Union man is Hon. J. E. Ward, formerly our Minis ter to China, and he is dreadfully perse cuted by the Rebels, wbjo have arrested him at least twenty time while trying to escape, and robbed him 5f his entire prop erty, some 8300,000, and threatened sever al times to hang him. Mr. Ward says they can" kill him if they like, but that he will never surrender his allegiance to the General Government, or cease to detest and denounce the mis erable abortion known as the Southern Confederacy. lie is very anxious to go North, but is so closely watched that he caunot escape. Mr. Riddell thinks that it is not at all improbable that Mr. Ward will be assassinated in Savannah, unless he succeeds in getting out of the State. The greatest excitement, Mr. Riddh says, reigned turougnout tne oouttx on the subject of war, and the women of Savannah daily practiced with firearms, to perfect themselves in their use. lie thinks that even in Savannah the presence of the Federal army would be hailed with joy by a majority of the peo ple. Savannah, like all the southern towns through which 3Ir. Riddle passed, is eu tiraly barren of business, and complaints are rife of the stagnation of trade and the scarcity of money. Mr. Riddle had the greatest difficulty in obtaining 500 in gold, although bis brother-in-law had 90,000 of G eorgia cur rency in the Planters' Rank, and when lie did procure coin, was compelled to pay 50 cents premium for it. Nashville has no defences,- and the people thje have, or pretend to have, no fear of any attack from the Federal forces as they say they never can pass Rowling Greeu. The State House at Nashville was pro tected bv 'six G4-rounders. but those wctr to bft sfnt to Uowlino- firpen in .-i f,. days. Mr. Diidell was at Rowlin Green l several days, and has had a long inter view with Gen. Ruckner, who, he thinks, has some .sixty-five or seventy thousand men under his command, and was expect ing Gen. Floyd from Virginia, with nix oi seven thousaud, and Gen. Walter T. Herbert a brother ot the California Con gressman who killed the Irish waiter at Washington IVom Louisiana, with about the same number. Gen. Ruckner is very strongly defen ded, having an admirable position and three tiers of fortifications, which cannot be taken save by a de.-perale fight and with great bloodshed. If the Rebels are driven from one position, thoy can take another, and for a long time make a mot formidable resistance. 31r. Riddeli thinks" the prospect of success against Rowling Green is very small, but that (he ilauking of Ruckner on the right and loft would insure, his defeat. Mr. Riddell opines that Gen. Ruell's force is about one hundred and twenty five thousand, and that he will not make an attack on the Rebels unless he has very good reason to hope for complete Mieces. Hen AI Lulloch made a speech at S:i Sa- vautiah on the eveuinr of t! ike iui nit.. and told the people that the South hud won all the battles thus far, aud would continue to be victorious until their inde pendence xvas recognised. Mr. Riddell says that the most astoun ding falsehoods are daily circulated and believed throughout the South, and th;tt he himself had no doubt, at tne time, that Lincoln had letn hanged. Such stories as the taking of Raltimore, Phila delphia and New York are verv common. and the Savannah papers tublish accounts ot ial.e victories won by the Jieoeis or six times every week. live Jl If you have great talents, indu?- '. try will improve them ; if moderate abili-; ties, industry will supply their deficien- ! ciea.
