Camp Pibrpoixt, Va., Dec. 13, 1861.
Correspondence of The Alleghaniah.
Qur division was out on two foraging
npeditions last -week, in the neighborhood
caQ;runesville, eleven miles from our
. "e First brigade had the advance
V-.e rsfc expedition, and the Second
Vs vch the 11th regiment forms
iL.led as a reserve. The expedi
Fceeded in "cabbaging" about sixty
on loads of wheat, corn, &c. "We re
darned the same day.
On the second occasion, the Second bri
gade had tbe advance, and went in the
(anie direction a3 before. We advanced
to within two miles of Drainesville, and
then struck out into the country off the
ciaia road. We halted near the farm of
a rich old Secessionist named Dr. Gunuell,
from who3e well-stocked "plantation" we
made quite a rich haul.
Companies A and D, of the Eleventh,
were detailed to take charge of the farm
aud load the wagons, of which latter arti
cle we had about sixty. The boys imme
diately fell to with a will, and in a com
paratively short space of time every wagon
v&s loaded down with wheat, corn and po
tatoes. In addition, we captured eleven
Lead of horses, a pair of oxen and wagon,
thirty-eight hogs, averaging two hundred
pouads each, two baggies, a eplendid car
rif ge, and a lot of excellent light harness.
Two negro elave9, the property of eaid
Guunell, were also taken in tow and bro't
into camp. They were exceeding glad to
le afforded opportunity to effect their lib
trty, and are now, I understand, employed
a cooks in some of the regiments.
Two young men, of known Secession
proclivities, and relatives of Ounnell, were
arrested on the farm at the same time, and
t?at to Washington for examination. I
have not as yet learned what disposition
was made of them.
The cavalry which accompanied the ex
psdition captured three rebel cavalry pick
eta near the farm. The appearance of the
prisoners as regards the article of clo
thing was not calculated to impress one
with the idea that they were scrupulously
well-cared for, inasmuch as each individ
ual wore a different kind of attire from
the others, and none of the best at that !
Although purporting to be soldiers, they
cculd not be distinguished from civilians.
It waa reported that we were within
two or three miles of a rebel camp, but of
course I cannot vouch for the truth of
this. We saw no eigns of the enemy,
with the exception ot the three pickets
tflioai we captured.
At about three o'clock, we turned our
fices toward "home," where we arrived at
dark, after having marched nearly twenty
five miles. We felt considerably fatigued,
you may be sure, but a night's rest made
U3 as good, as new again and ready for

placed. They are thus made much warm
er as well as larger. Some of them boast
the possession of stoves ; others compro
mise on homemade fire-places, called "Cal
ifornia stoves." Between the two, we are
right comfortably situated.
The weather here is becoming pretty
foM and winter-like, but, considering that
o are verging on the cold season, and
that the climate is not far different from
that of Pennsylvania, and, in fact, of the
Alleghanies, we should not expect it to be
otherwise. I do not know whether wo are
to go into winter quarters here or not, but
presume we will not. At all events, the
Government has not yet made eny provis
os for eucIi an arrangement.
Two deaths have occurred in Co. A du

Three other deaths in our regiment,

say in tho antiquated idiom, and lying

of the Public. Pick them up, uncork the

Genii will appear unto you from them.
Here the parallel ceases, however, for
these will be the Genii of Mirth, and Good
Humor, and Ili-Old-Time, instead of the
adverse, as above. Tho regis of their
"gay and happy" protection will encompass
you and be round about you, until they
float away and out of sight.
The Great Struggle thro' which wo are
now triumphantly passing has had the effect
of unearthing and bringing to light much
that is grand and original in our Nation

to the surface. Among these newly devel

phrases unique, elegant, exhilarating.
Ecphonesic gems, strung on Beauty's

this : that thou hast given us an ejacula

There is not a man in Christendom

and crosses of Business once in a while.
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull
boy." So, cast that ponderous burden of
Care from your shoulders, smoothe the
kinks and crows'-feet from your frontis

statically for the time being.
R. Burni, a gentleman well and favor
ably known in days when the world was
in its prime and our forefathers were pos
sibly in their primers, eliminated the idea
that "Man differs from man in tho polish,
not in the grain." This leads us to
remark that the "going in" may probably
be accomplished after divers and sundry
wajs and manners. Thus : Some of you
may "do" the occasion in the Everettian
etiquettian style ; others may embrace the
rippcty-row-dc-whack order. Many will
travel by the fast line with brakes up,
while a few will go round by the bridge.
No matter ! Letter went ! If it's in

Header, we wish you a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year I
Sad Occurrence. The Altoona Tri
bune of the 19th Inst, gives the following
mention of a horrible casualty purporting
to have occurred in the eastern section
of this county. We may preface the ex
tract by the remark that, up to the pres
ent time, we have heard nothing whatever
confirmatory of the report. The Tribune
says : "We learn that on Tuesday night
last, a house situate in Clearfield town
ship, Cambria county, near the Blair
county line, and not far from the Buck
horn tavern, belonging to a family named
Cochran, was entirely consumed by fire,
and the mother, a son and daughter per
ished in the flames. We do not know how
the firo originated tho above being all
that we could find cut concerning it."
"A Fool ! A Fool ! I Met a Fool !"
etc. We are told a pretty good story
concerning a certain personage of this
great and enlightened town, which, if true
and we have no doubt that it is goes
far to demonstrate that first impressions
are generally correct to ths letter. He
the aforesaid "personage" had suffered
himself to become what is known in vul
gar parlance as "half shot :" tha ia to
Eay, he had located some ten or twelve
inches of corn juice beneath I113 waistband,
with the effect of rendering him extreme
ly loquacious. In this happy condition,
ho ran afoul of a stranger, with whom he
immediately proceeded to hold an interlo-'
cution, something as follows :
"Well, sirrah, how are you ?" .
"Pretty good," answered Stranger.
"What's your name ?"
"Diggs."
- "You're a fine-looking fellow, and may
go to Congress yet for aught we know.
Where do you live ?"
"At Papertown."
"Come, now," queried Half Shot, who,
by-the-by, is possessed of an overweening
self-esteem, "come tell no what do you
think of me?"
"Well," slowly answered Stranger, "not
to mince matters, my charming unknown
friend, you are decidedly and without
doubt the demdest fool and nincompoop I
ever did see, and I would advise you to
skadaddle if you desire to escape a good
old fashioned walloping!"
Which hint the latter proceeded to act
upon without further ado.
AVe leave the subject with the remark
that the idea thus curtly expressed pre
sents an apt and right truthful picture of
the most pioininent characteristic of the
individual in question.
Co. C, 19th Regular Infantry.
Capt. T. C. Williams, of the 19th regular
infantry, was in town one day last week,
and called to see us. He reports his com
pany, which is composed almost exclu
sively of Cambria county men, in excel
cellent health and spirits, and "spiling
for a fight." They are still quartered at
Indianapolis, but expect to be ordered in
to Kentucky shortly. They have already
attained an excellent degree of discipline,
and Capt.-W. confidently assures us that
the Frosty Sons will be "heard from" on
the first available opportunity.
Annexed is the list of non-commissioned
officers of the company :
Orderly Sergeant Thomas It. Davis.
Second Sergeant II. Lemmon.
Third Sergeant E. C. Bennett.
Fourth Sergeant Reuben Jones.
Fifth Sergeant Abram Smith.
Corporals John Shroat, J. B. Shaffer, S.
Dibert, C. P. Oarer, James Singer, li. Davis,
George Paul, James Lingle.
All of the above, with two exceptions,
are from Cambria county.
Tribute of Respect. At a meeting
of Rhizoma Lodge No. 537, I. O. O. F.,
held at Wilmore on the 20th day of De
cember, inst., the following Preamble and
Resolutions in regard to the death of Bro.
Michael Burgoon were read and adopted :
Whereas, It has pleased Divine Providence
to remove from among us our beloved Broth
er in F., L. and T., under painful and distres
sing circumstances, not only to tho great af
fliction of all but to the extreme regret of our
Order, therefore, it is
. Resolved, That ia the death of Brother Bnr
goou we have lost not only a friend and a
Brother, but a man who required 'hot the ob
ligation of Odd Fellowship to make social and
humane. As a Brother we loved him ; as a
man we respected hira ; as a citizen he was
above reproach; and as a husband, father
and friend no eulogiumwe could bestow would
exalt him in the estimation of those who knew
him.
And Resolved, That as a tribute of respect
to our departed Brother wr hose loss we bo
deeply deplore our Lodge be draped in
mourning, and each member wear the badge
required by our order for thirty days; and
that the usual card to the widow of a deceas
ed Brother be presented, with the usual tokens
of Benevolence and Charity to the bereaved
family. By the Lodye."
