TODD HUTCHINSON. J'Mjhanian Office, Nov. 23, lS'il. Excursion on the Eb. and Crf.&s'on KULHOAD. In order to afford our citi zens opportunity to have practical demon 6tration of the completion of Our Railroad a fact that many cf them could scarcely :C3zc, on last Saturday excursion tick ets were issued for a trip to Cresson and return. Four cars wcro provided t meet the exigencies of the occasion, and these ere packed to their ful!est possible ca pacity with passengers. It is estimated that not less thau three hundred people men, -women and children embraced this method to form an acquaintance with Life on Our Local Rail. We suffered ourself to become of this number, and must say tbat wc do uot re gret it. On the contrary, we are delighted that we are enabled, from personal obser vation, to chronicle the whole affair a success. Everthing worked satisfactorily a3 regards the road and its arrangements, and everybody appeared to be in raptures with the flattering fact that wc at hst have railroad connectiou'with the rest of the world. Not a single accident occurred to mar the festivity that prevailed. In short : it was unanimously resolved that Our Railroad U just exactly The Thins wc have been looking ior, and now that we have it, it musjt and shall be cherished. The road is located with eminent skill along the peaks and cliffs of the route, and is a credit to the engineers and contractors uuder whose more immediate control it was constructed. As a necessi ty, there are several pretty heavy grade on it, but passengers experience as little j'jltmg or jostling as o.n the Main Line It conies up to the average staudard or jerfeciion. In this connection we may add, that a temporary 6iJcing for freight, a locomo tive shed and a water tauk are being con structed at the present terminus cf the road. As soon as these arc completed, the eara will make this end of .the route the starting point. "Work on the unfiu Lhei section of the road a distance of a La'.f mile is still progressing, as is also tha erection of the Depot building. SiLvra Grays. A correspondent of the Philadelphia .Press, writing irum II ar risburg, thu3 ornplimentarily notices our Cambria County Silver Grays, in quarters at Camp Curtin : The "Silver Grays V It is not many years since that expression had a political signifi cance; hut to-day in Camp Curtin, it meant something more, something dtcper, something greater. Walking around camp this afternoon, i noticed a new company coming in through an entrance, and as the arrival oi" a new com pany is aa object of interest, I waited for it to pass. Imagine my feeliugs, on discovering tbat the company was composed entirely of men whose locks and beards denoted their ftijuie ''The Silver Grays." On inquiry, I found they hailed from Cambria county. I had believed that I realized in some measure, if not fully, the importance of the coullict in which wc are engaged ; I had seen a number of men whose years exempted them from mil itary duty, volunteer to defend the Hag and the Constitution of our fathers from the con taminating touch of treason ; I had seen a fond and doting mother send her only son her only earthly hope with the injunction, while the tears came thick and fast, your country needs you : do your duty. I had seen these and many other things that would lead one to ponder upon the justice of the cause in which we have unsheathed the sword, yet never, until I stood in the presence of those old men, did the grandeur, the righteousness, and glory appear to me. Here were fifty odd men, whose prime of life had passed, aud whose lives had been spent in the enjoyment of the benign institutions bqueathed to us by the patriots of the Revolution, offering their lives as a testimony of their devotion to those institutions ! The spectacle was a sublime one, worthy the pen and pencil of genius. rather Diamond Cut Diamond. A good joke was perpetrated by one of our County Commissioners at the expense of Lis brother officials, the other day, which, without vouching for its authenticity, wc herewith give oui readers : On the for mation of the new board of Commission era, last week, among other things devolv ing upon that honorable body, it became necessary to appoint a Mercantile Apprais er for the county. As a majority of the Co mmissioncrs are Loco-Focos, cf course they Lad the undisputed say in the mat to; and they determined among them selves. upon a suitable man for the posish. They arranged it, however, that a compli mentary vote should be given to two or three aspirants as a sort of 4;mol!iuer" merely, and without the slightest intention of electing cither of them. Matters and things being thus neatly cut and dried, talict number one came up for considera tion. The two Loco-Foco Commissioners duly deposited their "complimentary" Totes, each for distinct and separate in dividuals ; after which they probably pro ceeded to flatter themselves that the thing had been done and nicely. But they reck oned without their host. For at this junc ture aud here the laugh ccmes in the remaining Commissioner, who had been 'iuietly sitting by, and who had observed the names of the respective candidates voted for by the others, took occasion to Manifest himself by casting his ballot for ae of the "complimentary" candidates, kertly elect in J him ly one majority! fcis, to use a common expression, is rather a big thing on the hindmost. Fan CJ the tempest in the Comuiissior:crean &-pot it would create ! Fancy the offi cials contemplating the unexpected result 01 their "complimentary!" And then their pheelinks 1 Installation and Retirement. Mr John Duck, the newly elected Sheriff of this couiity, was sworn into office yes terday. Although wc opposed his election on political grounds, still we are confident in predicting that he will make a popular public official. R. Linton, Esq., the outgoing Sher iff, h- filled his term of office with honor both to himself and the county. The thanks of the people will follow him in his rciiracy: Wc tender our best wishes for the pros perity of both the parties. Eb. & Cresson Railroad Schedule. The County Commis sioners have appointed Mr. John Farrell, of Johnstown, Mercantile Appraiser cf thie county for the ensuing year. "Tme Fieiiy Horse." Tho following poem was evidently written under the in spiration of tho completion of Our Rail road. It is very good : The fiery horso came into town, Of 'normous strength and size ; Ilis breath like clouds of smoke ascends In volumes to the skies. His head he carries high and proud, With one eye straight before ; LTe neighs ferociously and loud, Which makes the forest roar. His lungs are made of brass and steel, II 13 stomach's made of fire, He travels oil o'er mead and hill, With limbs that never tire. Thro' woodland, mud, and "cross the plaiu, O'er rivulet, .-reek and stream, His Strength moves oil" be mighty train, With lire, wood and steam. No verdant meads, nor piles of oat3, Nor salt, nor hay he needs, For stately beech aud sturdy oaks Arc all on which he feeds. lie needs no whip to quicken speed, Nor spur to make him show : The only tiling he wants is feed, And that will make him go.
