f V i i ' 1 T I : ::::::::JULY 4. LOCAL AND PERSONAL. prom Our Volunteers. - rinlieu of the letter of our regular corre enondent from Camp Wright, which tailed to 10 come to hand this week, we present to our readers a few extracts from a couple of pri vate letters received from the soldiers : Sl'DGET of news fkom our SOLDIERS STRAWS AD ITEMS OF ISTEUUST. Camp Wright, June 30, 18G1. Xothiug of material interest has occur red here lately. The discipline is much stricter in camp now than formerly, in consequence of some of the soldiers bav in taken too much outside liberty. The Cauibria Guards get their full share of guard duty, and, as I think, a little more. There are about forty companies here 6vorn into the three years' service, three Df which are detailed each day as camp guard. By this ratio our company should be called out only once in thirteen days ; but instead of such being the case we have been detailed twice during the same week. This is Unfair, and it is clearly the duty of the oSeers of the day to see that such occurrences do not again hap pen. The Cambria Guards were sworn in for three years, unless sooner discharged, on last Tuesday. Benjamin Hodgers, George "Williams, Milton Hoffman and John Longenecker were honorably dis charged an account of there being an ex cess in our ranks. Another importaut duty was alsro performed the same day. The entire company, from the Captain down, were marched to the hospital and then and there vaccinated. It is probable that we will bearmed aud uniformed by the 4th of July. Maj. Gen. M'Call and staff visited our camp on Friday, and re viewed the troops. "N e made soldierly uppearance. quite a TUS CAMBRIA QCARD3 SWOBS IX TEEIR MASI.V JJARIS'O SO ONE FLINCHES. Camp Wiugiit. June 2G, 18G1. Capt. Litzinger arrived yesterday with j dozen as fine looking recruits as could k found in the State, all brimful of en thusiasm. The company were immedi ately called together and marched to head quarters, to be "sworn in." Upon counting nose, we found that we numbered 81 men four more than could be received. Lieut. Hall, the mustering officer sent here by the State, then read some of the "Articles of War," assuring us that death ww the penalty of desertion, and rcquest I iag all those that did not wish to take the nth to step out of the ranks. No one moved. He then said, "Gentlemen, four of joumwsf withdraw, and you can now do ?o honorably, and be passed to your homes frea of expense." This last appeal had no effect whatever, unless to make the ( uarus -tin firmer in their places. So Capt. L. w obliged to strike ofT the names of four hoia he considered least able to endure :fo hardships of camp life, and had abso- iitely to order them from the ranks. I He couipauy then took the usual oath for "Irce years, after which we gave three aes three and a tiger for the "Uuiou -i Constitution" aud marched to our ."rters. Sew County Convention. The New wnty men, "determined to be at least tot in the field," recently issued a call t 4 County Convention to nominate a RcouDty ticket, to meet at Crcsson on enday, 1st inst. Col. Anderson, the distinguished hero of Fort Sumter whose memory will ever be enshrined In the hearts of" his grateful fellow-countrymen paid our town a visit on Monday. lie stopped at Thomp son's Mountain House, and remained sev eral hours, during which time he was visited by a large number of our citizens. All who had the pleasure of taking him by the hand and hearing him converse were charmed by his unostentatious manner and correct views. He looks the gentle man that his words and deportment prove him to be. He is modest as to his own exploits, and rarely dwells upon them, content to let his record speak for itself. Although vivacious and sprightly, his conversation shows him to be a sincere Christian. When interrogated as to wheth er ho felt any fear as to the result of the Fort Sumter conflict, he said that he "put his trust in God and left the issue with Him." He expresses great hope that the Government will eventually succeed in crushing out rebellion and in inaugurating a new system of affairs in the South. Col. Anderson is of medium size, and his frame is well-proportioned and well knit. Ilis features are regular, his eye brilliant and piercing, aud his general ap pearance prepossessing, lie is plain and unpretending in manner, prompt in action, and commands the respect of all with whom he comes in contact, lie is fifty six years of age, and although somewhat jaded aud careworn from the unceasing demands made upon his rnergies at Fort Sumter, bids fair to eke out the allotted span of man. Let us hope that he may, for there is no Hum we can so illy afford tj lose, as this same Robert Anderson heart tried and true as steel Idol of the Feople whose name will go down to pos terity as among the greatest and best of those who did buttle for the Union in this her hour of deadly peril. Fatal Casualty. T I Johnstown Tribune states as'follows: A distressing casualty occurred on the premises of Mr. George Kuable, in Taylor township, on Wednesday of last week. A number of Mr. K.'s neighbors were assisting him in raising a barn, and while some of them were adjusting a heavy piece of timber in place upon the frame, the stick, by a sud den and unexpected lurch or roll, slipped off atone corner, and in falling struck Mr. A. 13. Bowser, who was standing close in by the frame, upon the shoulder, carrying him with it and under it to the ground, crushing his body in a shocking manner, and killing him instantly. Mr. Bowser was about oO years of age, aud leaves a wife and three children to mourn his sud den aud distressingly violent end. Blair County. The Plantng Mill. Mr. B. F. Wil liams, with commendable energy, is ma king rapid headway toward the completion of his placing mill. He expects to have it in running order in a few days. Louctto Exhibition. The public exhibition cf the students in attendance at St. Francis' Academy, Loretto, came off on Thursday of last week. Drop in at his store and examine his stock. More Butter. Another firkin of butter was shipped to thecoldicra at Camp Wright last week. The Safe was on the second floor and fell to the basement of the Mill, and was subjected for six hours to an intense heat among the ruins, which wasgreatly increased by the combustion of a large quantity of grain confined within the brick walls. After tha fire the safo was opened and the books and papers taken out in a state of perfect preser vation, the paper not even being discolored.
