Soldiers' Lirn-Kas Ought to mk
Frankkd. The soldiers who write home
to their trieruU oairht to.b-.i allowed both
to send and receive letters tree of postage.
In the Mexican war we believe this
privilege was extended to them by special
act of Congress, and certainly, if members
of Con-reds, themselves? enjoy the frank
ing privilege, there is no good reason why
the soldier should not have it likewise.
lie is as much in the service of his coun
try as the Congressman, and his services
are certainly as valuable, while his duty
is performed under sacrifice of time, bus
iness and pecuniary advantage, which the
Congressional Representative is free fiom.
A soldier who gets eleven dollars a month
cannot afford to pay a groat deal in post
age, without depriving himself or hi fam
ily of some of the few comforts, which
that money would obtain If the Post
Office Department can afford to carry the
mails for the people of the .seceded States,
it certainly ought to be able to do so,
without charge for the soldiers who are
upholding the laws and authority of the
Government. PntlaiMjJiia LeJycr.
Chances of Being Killed in War,
Marshal! Saxc, a high authority in
.such, things, was in the habit of saying
that to kill a man in battle, a man's
weight in lead must be expended. A
French medical and surgical gazette,
published at Lyons, says this fact Was ver
ified at Solferino, even in tho recent im
provement in fire arms. The Austrians
tired 8,400,000 rounds. The loss of tbe
Italians was 2,000 killed and 10,000
wounded. Each man hit cost 700 rounds.,
and each nan killed cost 4,2000 rouuds.
The mean weight of a ball is one ounce,
thus we rid on an average, that it re
qu:red 272 pounds of lead. to kill a man.
If anyone of our friends should get int - a
fight they should feel great comfort in tho
fact, that 700' shots may" be fired at them
before they arc hit, and 4,000 before they
"shuffle off this mortal coil."
CgV While the boys weie out at recess
recently, at one of the village schools at
South -Adams, a gentleman riding by
stopped and inquired of a bright looking
lad, "What they did in there V The ur
ehin looked up, scanning his interroga
tor's face a moment, and then replied,
"They tan hides, sir I" That boy prob
ably kffew whereof he spoke.
K?33u. '"'There is no place like home !"
said a brainless fop the other dajr to a pret
ty young lady. "Do you really think so?"
said the young lad'. "Oh yes," was the
reply. "Then" said calico,"why dont you
stay" there V

both in Europe and the United States, and
prescribed in their practice. The experience
of thousands daily proves that no preparation
of Iron can be compared with it. Impurities
of the blood, depression of vital energy, pale
and otherwise sickly complexions, indicate its
necessity in almost every conceivable case.
Innoxious in all nialadies'in which it has been
tried, it has proved absolutely curative in each
of the following complaints, viz:
In DcliliUt. Nervous Affect tons, Emaciation
Dyspepsia, Constipation, IHarrha'a, Dysentery,
Incipient Consumption, Scrofulous Tuberculosis,
Salt Rheum, Jlisnunttruation, Whites, Chloro
sis, Liver Complaints, Chronic Headaches, Rheu
rnaltsm, Intermittent fevers, A'onples on ri
lace. etc.
In cases of General Debility, whether the
result of acute diseases, or of the continued
diminution of nervous and muscular energy
from chronic complaints, on trial of this re
storative has proved succfsful to an. extent
w'i'ch no description nor v:;-itn "attestation
would render credible. Invalids so long bed
ridden as to have become forgotten in their
own neighborhoods, have suddenly reappeared
in the busy world as if just returned from pro
tracted travel in a distant lind. Some very
signal instances of this kind are attested of
female sufferers, emaciated victims ofappa
lent marasmus, sanguineous exhaustion, crit
ical changes, and that complication of nervous
and dyspeptic aversion to air and exercise for
which the physician has no name.
In Xervous Affections of all kinds, and for
reasons familiar to medical men, the operation
of this preparation of iron must necessarily be
salutary, for, unlike the old oxides, it is vigo
rously tonic, without being exciting and over
heating; and geinly, regularly aperient, even
in the most obstiuate casts of costi veucss,
without ever being a gastric purgative, cr in
flicting a disagreable sensation.
It is this lattcri foperty, among others, which
makes it so remarkably effectual and perma
nent a remedy for '., upon which i also
appears to exert a distinct and specific action,
by dispersing the local tendency which forms
them.
In Dyxpepxia, innumerable as are its causes,
a sinrie tcx 01 tnese cnaivccaie x 111s lias 01-
ten sufficed for themoit babiinal cases, inclu
ding the attendant costivenc.-s.
In unchecked Dlarrhaa, even when advanced
to iJysrnttry, confirmed, emaciating, and appa
rently mali' nant, thecllects have been equally
decisive and astonishing.
In the locai pains, loss of fiesh and strength,
u biiitating cough and remittent hectic which
generally indicate Incipient Consumption, this
remedy has allayed the alarm of friends and
physicians, in several very gratifying and in
teresting instances.
In Scrofulous Tuberculosis this medicated
Iron has had tar more than the good effect of
the most cautiously balanced prvparatlons of
iodine, without any of their w ell known lia
bilities. The attention of females cannot Le too con
fidently invited to this rented)! r.nd restorative,
in t';e cases peculiarly affecting them.
In Rhcuntaiism, both chronic and infiamato
ry in the latter, however, more decidedly
it h;ti been invariably well reported, both as
alleviating pain and reducing the swellings
and stiffness of the joints and muscles.
In liitc.-wiitcut Fevers it must ne cessarily be
a great remedy and energetic restorative, and
its progress in the new settlements of the West,
will probably Le one of high renown and use
fulness. No remedy has ever been discovered
in the Mhole history of medicine which exerts
such prompt, happy and fully restorative ef
fects. Good appetite, complete digestion, rsp
id acquisition of strength, with jiii unusual
disposition for active and cheerful exercise
immediately follow its use.
