Tl,e Cambria Guards Called Out .
,r,y ABE 0RDERED7O CAMP WRIGHT.
lRim DEPARTURE FROM OUR MIDST,
ic., &C, &c.
On las Friday, after a tedious and
tiresome delay, the requisition for the
Ombria Guards" vjxs received, This
company, which was orgauized and ten
crd to the Government in response to
tte President's first call for volunteers,
fas accepted hy the State authorities sev
eral reeks since j but the official com
mand to report at camp was so tardy in
arrival at verJ many ere inclined to
beliive that they would never be ordered
into service.
To such an extent did this
; ?rcs5;on receive credit, that a large
l umber who had enlisted in the ranks, and
vho could brook no longer delay, attached
themselves to other companies. All fears
a the premises, however, were aissipated
fa t'ne receipt of the requisition, order
ia-'the company to report at Cainp Wright
,.u the following "Wednesday
Recruiting was immediately bepin, and
ia a short time the complement was ob
tained. The "good men and true" who
ferred forth to the defence of our Coun
try in this her hour of deadly peril have
shown themselves to be indeed men and
jatriots worthy to wear the name of free-
Ecn. They are among our best citizens
the pride and flower of the Mountain
County. With willing heart and -strong
riht arm go they to the fray, and their
hearts' best blood will be freely poured
forth ere our glorious standard, the Stars
sd Stripes, shall be suffered to drag in
Jiihonor beneath the heel of Traitors.
SENTIMENT OF OUR CITIZENS.
Ou Tuesday evening, n pn blic meeting
of our citizens was held in the Court
House, to give expression to the universal
sentiment of respect and esteem eutcr
tcrtaincd for the Guards, and to bid them
"God speed I" The room was densely
picked, and a large number of fair ladies
peed the occasion with their presence.
That venerable patriot, .John Williams,
L., asisted by several Vice Presidents,
presided. John Feulon, !. L. Johnston,
ind A. C. Mullin, Esquires, delivered
eloquent addresses, telling the soldiers that
next to their God their first obligation was
to their country; that on them devolved
4 portion of the duty of perpetuating the
institutions of the greatest and best gov
ernment existing; and bidding them all
'lie Brave."
DEPARTURE OF THE GUARDS.
Everything being in preparation, yes-
t:Jay (Wednesday) morning, at about
5 o'clock, the Guards took their depar
ture from our midst. They were conveyed
to V ilmore by same of our citizens, where
tliey took the Express train for Pittsburg.
A very large assemblage of relatives and
friends of the bold soldiers assembled, not
withstanding the early hour, to see them
em off and say "Good bye." The part
ly cf near and dear friends is'alwavs sad
this was not an exception, llu.sbands
"M wives, fathers and sons, brother? and
i'ers, looked on each other perhaps for
22 last time on earth and many bitter
tcrs were shed. Put amidst all the sor
ft manifested, it was pleasing to observe
Uat vo o-ne sought to restrain another

The annexed Farewell to the soldiers
is from the pen of a lady. It breathes
the true spirit of patriotism :
To tlie Caiubria Guards."
EY CATALPA.
Farewell ! proud soldiers, true and brave !
Friends check the tear, and hush the "No"
Or take them back, and with a smile
Give you their blessing bid you go.
For who would know a coward heart,
A soul tbat shrinks from duty's call,
That lingers far behind the brave,
Winning no blessing, sharjng all !
Friends love you better though they weep
To think of how the hours will creep,
Slow, slow, as drags the lengthened chain
That binds the prisoner to his pain.
But they will pass, the snow-white clouds,
That chase each other o'er the skj' ;
The flowers that open, bloom, "and fade,
Will mark them surely creeping by.
Each tick ! tick ! tick ! the old clock gives
Will say "another second gone"
While every mark the shadows icake
Heralds another creeping on.
Heaven sure will guard the good and brave
Who seek their country's name to save,
To hand to unborn millions down
The blessings they themselves have known.
Full many a heart will fondly dream
Of camp, with white tents here and there;
And hope will many a picture weave
Of welcome home, to lighten care.
Frien is, when the pule mcon through her veil
Looks on the land and murmuring sea,
Will kneel, and if they ever prayed,
Will pray, brave men. for each of thee:
Pray that thc God of Battle keep,
Pray that the angels guard thy sleep,
Pray that your arm be strong to savo
Your country from dishonor's grave.
Go forth to-day, assured that we
Shall wait and watch thy bravo career,
Be proud of every laurel won,
For every fall a father's tear.
Go forth, return with badge of peace,
With Flag unfurled ip. Freedom's light ;
The traitors' vile "Palmetto tree"
Be trampled in oblivion's night.
Go forth ! we send you, noblest, best
Your heart, your arm will brave the test-
Be first to shout, "We're freemen, free
We've scars our Flag and Victory!"

xilK JL iliiLAIiY JjAST WEEK. In OUr
last issue we made brief mention of an at
tempt made to rob the premises of Mr.
Pavid Pryee, an old and highly respected
farmer residing about a mile from town.
We have since received fuller particulars,
from-which it appears that a terrible fight,
resulting in the complete overthrow of the
miiuight despoilcr, was enacted. . The
bold villain, whoever he was, made his
entrance into the house at about the hour
of two in thc morning. 3Ir. P., who was
asleep at the time, soon became aware of
the presence of somebody in his room, and
arose from bed. lie was met by a stun
ning blow from a bludgeon in the hands
of the burglar, which nearly prostrated
him Fiecoverinir himself, however, he
eized a
fierce struggle

received quife freely on both sides, but
the burglar was at length obliged "to give
ground. Mrs. Prycc, who came to the as
sistance of her husband at about this
ucture, with a lighted candle in her hand.
was prostrated by a blow from the assail
ant, and the light put out. In the con
fusion which ensued, the burglar succeed
ed in making his escape through a win
dow, in his haste carrying sash and all
with him. He left behind his cap, a sort
of depreciated "skull-cover," which is the
only clue to his identity.
Mr. Pryee was severely cut up about
thc head and shoulders, and Mrs. Prycc
received a heavy blow above the left eye.
Their injuries were promptly dressed,
however, and they are now recovering.
As the burglar probably received many
shrewd licks in the encounter, and as he
secured no booty whatever, he has only
his labor and bruises for his pains. We
hope he may be arrested and punished as
he deserves.

Crcsson, this couiity, have been leased for
a term of five years by G. W. Mullin,
formerly of the St. Lawrence Hotel, Phil
ada. They-will be opened lor the recep
tion of visitors on the 20th inst. One
of the hotels will hereafter be kept open
r during the winter.
Man Killed. An elderly gentleman
named Henry Amsbaugh, residing four
miles east of Johnstown, was killed on
Wednesday evening of last week by being
run over by the Express train cast on the
l'enna. Ilailroad.
Painful Accident. One day last
week, a soldier going eastward with his
company on thc Pcnna. Ilailroad, had his
arm fractured at-Wilmore station by its
coming in contact with a projecting stick
of wood while the cars were in motion.
Citanoed. The schedule of the Penn
sylvania Ilailroad was changed on Mon
day last. Both m,ails are now carried in
the morning, and are due here at 12
o'clock, M.
The Fourth of July. Well, friends
and fellow citizens, about the "glorious
Fourth" are we to have a celebration, or
are we not ? "Will we honor the anniver
sary of American Independence with a
rousing demonstration of some sort or
other, or will we permit the dear old day
to pass by unwelcomed and nnhonored ?
We hope that the former of these propo

not seem to indicate that our hopes are
, ,
likely to be fulfilled. Our citizens, who
are generally exceedingly patriotic, appear
apathetic on this subject. In fact, they
don't seem
to know that the greatest
and brightest, higholdest and best holiday
yet discovered atnl retains a prominent
niche in our National calender. Or if
they do know it, they don't show it.
This must't be. In almost every town and

WlTMERS BbIDGB,
Lancaster Tp. Julv 30, 1860.
Messrs. Evans and Watson: Gentlemen
The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which
I purchased from your agent, Mr. Adam R.
Ba-r, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 1858,
has been subjected to a very severe test
which it withstood in a most satisfactory
manner. This Safe, containing all my books,
together with valuible papers belonging to
myself and some to my neighbors and friends,
and rcpreseting a value of over Twenty Thous
and Dollars, ($20,000) was in my Mill which
was destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju
ly, I860, and passed throngh the fiery ordeal
unscathed. Thc Safe was on the second floor
and fell to the basement of the Mill, end wa
subjected for six hours to an intense heat
among the ruins, which was greatly increased
by the combustion of a large quantity of grain
confined within the brick walls. After th
fire the safe was opened aud the books and
papers taken out in a state of perfect preser
vation, the paper not even being discolored.
This fact was, however, to many bystandera
a better recommendation of your Safes than
could be expressed in any other words from
ln- Yours Respectfully,
lse13 SAMUEL RANCK.
