As we no ticed last week, Joseph Shoemaker, Geo. Uushaberger, L. S. 3Iontgomcry, D. W. Goughenour and Philip Williams, of Johnstown, and Elijah Fuller, of 3Iary- land, were arrested in Johnstown on Tues day of last week, on a charge of making and passing counterfeit money. .The ar rest, which was made by the Pittsburg po lice, was managed very successfully. In formation having, been conveyed to U. S. 3Iarsh. Murdock to the effect that these par ties were engaged in making and passing spurious money, several policemen were de tailed to make the arrest. They employed the famous detective, Newcomer, to visit Johnstown and "lay the ropes." lie accordingly made his debut in that place uuder au assumed name, and soon wormed himself so completely into the confidence of the suspected parties as to entrap them. Several of the defendants admitted to him that they were in possession of counterfeit money, and that they manufactured it themselves. Everything being in readiness, on Tues day morning, officers Dougherty, Hague, Fox, Pender and Butler were despatched to Johnstown, and succeeded in arresting the above named parties. On them was found a considerable quantity of counter feit coin and bills. The prisoners were taken to Pittsburg on the ncxtrain, and committed to jail for a hearing. Ou Wednesday, tho examination of Goughcnour came up. Officer Hague .tes tified to finding counterfeit coin in defen dant's store, and Constable Ilerron testi fied to defendant's acknowledging to him that he had spurious dimes for sale. Held to bail iu the sum of $2,000. Joseph Shoemaker was next brought up. Officers Butler and Pender testified to finding spurious money on defendant and iu hisliouse. Held in 82,000 bail. George Uushaberger was next brought forward. Ilcrroa testified that defendant sold him five dollars' worth of counterfeit money. Held in $2,000 bail. L. S. Montgomery was next brought up. Ilerron deposed that he got a spu rious 82.50 gold piece from defendant, for which he paid him $1.25. Held in 81,000 bail. Elijah Fuller, of 3Iaryland, was next brought up. Newcomer testified that in speaking of some counterfeit dimes that defendant showed him, he (defendant) said, "I made them myself, and supplied those men," (meaning Shoemaker, kc ) Defendant also sail he had a die at home. Held in 82,000 bail. Philip Williams was discharged from custody, there being no evidence again him. Subsequently to this, Geo. IL Slick, an innkeeper at Slicksvillo, three miles from Johnstown, was arrested on the same charire as above. He was held in 82,000 bail for a further hearing. 3Iichacl Slie rer, ol Johnstown, who was also suspected of complicity in the crime, and who had only a dollar and a half in counterfeit money, which he says he passed-without knowledge of its nature, voluntarily made his appearance before the U. S. Commis sioner. He was released that he might secure bail for his appearance on Wednes day, when both will have a hearing. Independence Day. It is proposed by some of our exchanges that the coming Fourth of July be celebrated in a real old fashioned style throughout the entire length and breadth of our land except ing, of course, in the State of South Caroli na, where the holiday has been expunged from the list of "big days." Under the circumstances, the proposition is eminent ly appropriate; for if ever there was a time in the history of our country when the patriotism and loyalty of a free people should be shown, that time is now, when our glorious Flag is menaced by Traitors and the Temple of Liberty is shaken from turret to foundation-stone. By all means let us have a rousing celebration ; let the "Glorious Fourth" be observed after the manner of our forefathers. Let us, as patriots and freemen, show that we appre ciate the blessings of civil and religious liberty. Let us show to the world that although wc candifferon minor questions, when it comes to the gieat issue of Union or Disunion we are now and always will be for the "Stars and Stripes" that ''Flag of the free heart's hope and home, By angel bauds to valor giveu." It will bo seen by an advertisement elsewhere that 31 rs. Elizabeth Stahl will continue the business of repairing watch es, clocks, jewelry, &e., at the old stand of Jacob Stahl, dee'd. July 30 1800. Messrs. Evans asd Watson: Gentlemen The small size No. 1 Salamander safe which I purchased from your.agent, Mr. Adam R. Ba-r, in Lancaster City, on July 20th, 1858, has been subjected to a very severe test, which it withstood in a most satisfactory manner. This Safe, containing all my books, together with valuable papers belonging to myself and some to my neighbors and friends, and reprcseting a value ot over Iwenty thous and "Dollars, ($20,000) was in my Mill which was destroyed on the night of the 27th of Ju ly, 16C0, and passed through the tery ordeal unscathed. The Safe wasonthe second floor and fell to the basement of the Mill, and was subjected for six hours to an intense heat among the ruins, which was greatly increased by the combustion of a large quantity of grain confined witutn tee brick walls. Alter th Cre the safe was opened and the books and papers taken out in a state of perfect preser vation, the paper not even being discolored. This fact was, however, to many bystanders a better recommendation of your Safes than could be expressed in any other words from me. Yours Respectfully, sel3 SAMUEL RANCK. rfift,A large assortment of the above qual ity of Fire and Thief Proof Safes always o& hand and for sale at as low rates as any other firm, at EVANS & WATSON'S, No. 304 Chestnut St., Philadelphia.
