Tiie "Or,'.) Foai-." We a-Iuiiro the
much abused "oil i'ogy." There U con
siderable shrewd, uid time eoimuoii seuae
in him. He never, like an ill-conditioned
inu.-kct, sees -ni half-cocked, despite the
l;iet ol his not being a little rusty with
age and exposure. The "faery'' is not the
irate, cross graiuecl, stubborn being; he is
pictured by the majority of word painters.
That obstinate, surly, growling class we
are wont to recognize as "fogies," are
are merely pretenders. The true fogy is
-.jsiervatie. There is no taint of radi
calism in his composition. He is calm,
dispassionate and logical, and if he gets
the worst of an argument, he walks away
sis grandly as if he had achieved a victory.
He regardi themen of present, with their
bloviating about progress and all that, as
children, who, it properly trained, may
coi no to something good. Tie laughs at
tiiis tremendous goaheaditivcr.ess, and
smiles upon their efforts to outdo the past.
He pats them on the bead, and mildly
advises them to restrain their enthusiasm,
curb their fiery zeal, and coolly hints that
'ihey stumble who run fast," or suggests
to them to "look before they leap." He
regards the past,, vhich is the tomb of
his youth, its aspirants, joys and hopes.
He rarely rakes up the past in his genial
strictures upon the present or its people.
Vet, in his own habit.-', thoughts and be
liefs, he adheres to the ways of his youth.
He regards them as much better for him
and more comfortable than these of the gen eration
which has grown up aro'uud him.
This is the Simon Pure Fogy, and we
love him. His eccentricities are not
thrust into public' notice ; be keeps them
to himself as much as possible, and when
lie finoS they may be unwelcome intruders
in spite of restraint, he carefully sugars
them over with his kindly gonial good
humor, so that nr.trc as they are, we are
half inclined to like them. Long may "we
have the "old fogy" with us. Were we
all, of this generation, as honest, virtuous
and pure iu our lives ns.tho genuine old
logy, those who come a tier us would re
Hpect our memories much more than we
fancy they will as we live now.
Walking and Slkkpino with the
Mouth Orsx. There is one rule which
Hiould be strictiy observed by all iu taking
exercise by walking, as the very best
form iu which it cau be taken bv both
the young and the able bodied of all ages,
atid that is, never to allow theaction of
respiration or breathing to be carried on
tii rough the mouth: The nasal passages
are clearly the medium through which
respiration was, by our Creator, designed
to be carried on. "tiod breathed into
man's nostrils the breath of life," pre
vious to his becoming a living creat
ure. The difference in tha exhaustion of
Ftivngth by a long walk with the mouth
firmly and resolution closed, and respira
tion carried on through the nostrils iu-i-tead
of through the mouth, cannot be
conceived as possible by those who have
never tried the experiment. Indeed, this
mischievous and really uunatural habit of
carrying on the work of inspiration and
really unnatural habit of carrying on the
work of inspiration and expiration through
the mouth instead of through the nasal
passages, is the true origin of almost all
diseases of the throat a ml lungs, bronchitis,
congestion, asthma, and even consumption
itself.
That excessive, perspiration to which
some individuals are so liable in their
s-Ieep, and which is so weakening to the
body, is solely the effect of such people
sleeping with their mouths open. And
the same exhaustive results arise to the
imimal svs.em with the mouth open, in
htead of when not. engaged in conversa
tion preserving the lips in a state of firm
but juiet compression, (hildren should
never be allowed to sleep, stand or walk
with their mouths open ; for, besides the
vacant appearance it gives to the coun
tenance, it sometimes causes coughs, colds,
and sore throats. Dr. Half.
