. little daughter of Alex. Mock, of
Utoona, was scalded so severely several
iip since as to result in her death.
Dr. Michael Hay, an old and highly
re;pected citizen of Johnstown, died at
his residence at that place on the 21st ult.
Take particular notice to D. J. Evans'
advertisement of a Lost Watch. A re
gard of three dollars is offered for the re
jaro of the missing article.
The Post Master for this borough has
BOt vet been named, but the general
' jupposition is that Major John Thompson,
of the Mountain House, will be the lucky
appointee. He will make a good officer.
The Poor Directors of Huntingdon
county have contracted for the erection
of an additional poor house building, es

A man named Peter Shacffer, who re

On a recent visit down over the moun

rlere we had the pleasure of meeting our
young friend, T. J). Litzinger. He is en

the position with acceptance. Success.
The summer session of the Eldersridgc
Academy will open on the first day of
Maj next. This is one of the best edu
cational institutions for young men in the
State, and we take pleasure in recommen
ding it to the public. See advertisement
elsewhere.
What a climate is this of ours, to be
sure! On last Wednesday it rained all
day, Thursday and Friday were warm and
pleasant, Saturday was wet and gloomy,
Sunday was a beautiful and springlike
day, on Monday it snowed, sleeted and
rained all day, and on Tuesday and
Wednesday it thawed. The Doctors are
tfout the only ones who enjoy this ca
tarrhal, rhcumatical weather.
Extensively rumored that several of
Cambria's brave sons are to receive hon

itself into a reality, we will make, a note

are informed that the only man who

II jv to Get Through a Croavd.
We presume, dear reader, that you have
often been wedged fast in a crowd. It is
very unpleasant, the jamming, cramming
and crushing of a large and enthusiastic
body of men, especially if ycu have an en
gagement aud can't get out to fulfil it.
Besides, it is deleterious to "biled duds"
aud sensitive chapeaus. We think, there
fore, that we are performing a praiseworthy-
deed by laying before a suffering fra
ternity the following rules for their gui
dance : When you desire to get through
a crowd, elevate your elbow high, and
bring it down with great force upon the
digestive apparatus of your neighbor. lie
will double up and yell, causing the gen
tleman in front of you to turn half way
around to see what is the matter. Punch
him in the same way, step on his corns,
pass him, and continue the application
until you have reached the uesired point.
This plan never fails.
Shade Trees. Now is the time to
plant shade trees, and those who have not
attended to the matter should sec to it at
once. According to our estimate of
beauty, nothing so enhances the appear
ance of a town as the cultivation of orna
mental and shade trees along the streets.
Aud when the outlay required for such
beautifying is fo small for the trees can
be furnished for about fifty cents apiece
the only wonder is that it is not practised
to a far greater extent. "We would like to
see continuous rows of trees along all the
streets. "Scntter the germs of the beau
tiful," ar.d let us sit under the shadow of
our own locusts and maples ne.t summer.
The First Instant. The usual, or
rather an unusual amount of "flitting"
came off on Monday. Among those who
have changed their locations are : Ilerr
Foster, of the Arcade, "ho has gone into
the Logan House ; Isaac Crawford, of the
Logan House, removed to the Arcade ; C.
R. Jones, boot and shoe store, removed to
office one door cast of D. J. Evans & Son's
store.; Blain, barber, removed to office one
door west of Dr. Buna's lrug store ; E.
J. Mills, store, removed to post-office buil
ding. Just So. For an illustration of the
fact that you can buy goods as cheap in
Ebensburg as in the Eastern cities, pro
ceed immediately to C 11. Jones' store,
where yoa can satisfy yourself on the
score. Remember the place one door
east of D. J. Evans & Son's store, and al
most immediately opposite Davis & Jones'
store, Higli street.
The E. & C. RR. Depot. The erec
tion of this building, tlfe contract for
which was awarded to Mr. E. E. Evans,
has been commenced. Its size is to be
80x35 feet, and the eastern end is to be
on a direct line -ritli the western boundary
of Centre street. The terms of the con
tract require its completion cn or before
the first of June.
And No Mistake. The firm of D. J.
Evans & Son give notice through our ad
vertising columns this week that they are
now offering their entire stock of goods
for sale at cost. Those desiring bargains
and who doesn't ? can get them there.
Who speaks ?

LETTER FROM OILIANA. J
OlLIANA, April 2, 18G1.
To the Editor of The Allejhanian :
It is very slow work, is this boring bus
iness. When I wrote you before which
was one week ago I was down twenty-
three feet. I am only teu feet further
down now. r -
Thirty-three feet, and no oil.
Alas !
Several good boarding-houses are needed
here badly. (Tell the editor of the Moun
taineer to make a note of this tact, and
mention it in that list of What He Wants.)
Griib is scarce: also hirh-priccd. The
principal or big dish at the house in which
I foi merly boarded was old bootlegs stewed
in tin. For which, and such, we had to
LJisgorge the neat little swindle of a V per
diem. I couldn't stand it neither the
bootless leers nor the nricc. So I left.
. o
I think I did right. I now keep bachel
or's hall. I lay in provisions each night
from neighboring hen-roosts and spring-
houses. Economical, but risky in the
long run.
The weather continues favorable. The
trees out here have already commeticed
leaving. One curiosity that I have no
ticed about our climate is this In winter,
when the atmosphere is cold and fiigid,
the trees are generally as bare as a deli
cious darling's shoulders when she is un
dressed for an evening ball; while in
hot, sweltering summer they are arrayed
in plcntilul covering. Why not costume
up in winter as a protection against Boreas'
biting blasts, and go nude during summer ?
Sure enough. At least I think so.
I hear that the unfortunate dissensions
which disturbed our beloved country be
fore I embarked in my present spec, still
coutinue. I am sorry for this. It is
all wrong. On the word of a man who is
determined to strike a hundred barrel oil
well before many days, this excitement
and fuss isn't the thing. I am a Union
man ; likewise a Northern man and I
can see no valid reason for destroying this
rreat and eulighteued E Pluribus Unum.
Besides, I am Captaia of the Oiliaua
Guards, as noble-looking a body of drilled
and disciplined men, from the commander
down to the powder-monkey, as ever han
dled ramrod. Aud if those villainous
Southern Reign-of-Terrorist3 kick up a
row not a war of words but a war of
swords I am distinctiy and indisputably
in. With Justiso and Right as our
shield, we will grasp the hideous para
phernalia of war and go in and win. The
various fascinations of oil will give way to
the pomp and circumstance of gellorious
war. Tattoo, reveille, shoulder arms, car-touch-boxes,
blood and glory : idvar.ee,
retreat no, sir-ce ! blot out that last
word Charge, Caleb, charge ! and on
to Vietoricty! Wuuhhit strong-minded
women make good soldiers they are so
great on precipitating themselves into
breeches
Our battle-cry is in the following thril
ling and strictly original words :
Strike till the last armed foe expires !
Strike for your altars aud yourires !
Strike for the green graves of your sires !
God and Oi'iana !
The "strike" part of this, slogan, I take
it, is something unique and altogether
called for by the circumstances and sur
roundings. Patriotically, etc., CALEB SMITH.

luxuriant hair. If applied to the scalp, it will
cure balinks8, and cause to spring up in place
of the bald spots a fine growth of new hair.
Applied according to directions, it will turn
reu or towy hair dauk, and restore gray hair
to its original color, leaving it soft, smooth
and flexible. The Osgue.nt" is an indispen
