Down in Harper's Ferry section,
There has been an insurrection ;
Old Brown thought the nigger would sustain
hi. n,
But old uiassa Coveruor Wise
Put his spec3 upon his ejc3,
And showed him to the happy Und of Canaan.
Ho! ho! ho! ha! ha! ha!
The time of Pentecost ii coming,
Never mind the weather, but get over dou
ble trouble,
For I'm bound for the happy land of Canaan.
Old Wise shook his fists
At tW"- abolitionists,
And wo iiril like to have a chance to train 'era,
lie would' hang them all genteelly,
Gerritt Smith and Horace Greely,
Should he atch them in the nappy land of
Canaan.
Cnonua Ho ! ho ! lio ! kc.
Old Brown now is. dead,
And the last words he said
"Were Don't keep me here long remaining;
First they walked him up a slope,
Then they dropped him thro' a rope,
And sent hini to tli3 happy land of Canaan.
Chorcs Ho ! ho! ho ! kc.
I will mention in my song
How the Indies pass along,!
The size of their hoop skirts a gaining ;
They will pet so large so soon,
That they'll look like a balloon,
And they'll lloat to the happy land of Canaan.

"GaAFTixo Tin
riiary number of
Ghape. In the Feb
tho Genesseo Farmer,
the folio win ' article appears :
As early in the spring as the ground
can be got away from the stock to be
grafted upoa, clean away the stem two or
three inches deep, saw or cat off the viae
smooth i then prepare your graft, (which
should have been cut from the vine in the
early part of the winter.)
If your stock is thick, say one inch or
more in diameter, cut out a wedge, to cor
respond with the wedge on the graft ; if
the stock be less than three-fourths of an
inch in diameter, then merely split down
clean, as in the usual way of cleft graft
ing, but if the grnft be not held firmly, it
is well to tie around the split with a bit of
matting or strong thread, which will rot
off before doing any damage. When you
have inserted the graft, draw the earth in
and press firmly around the joiut where
operated upon, and up to and barely ex
posing the bud, filling in with dry mould
if the carth be wet. Use no cement what
ever ; I believe it is a great evil.
Be sure to cover yoar graft with loose
straw or some kind of rubbish that will
not pack tight ; this i3 to keep the frost
from hoisting out the graft, in case freez
ing occurs afterward, which frequently is
the case, as I have grafted iu February
sometimes, as well as to shade the bud and
keep the air eff somewhat a necessary
precaution. When the graft begins to
grow, the natural or stock suckcr3 must be
kept down or they will soon "rob the graft.
I have usually succeeded in this way.
For root grafting in the house, my best
success has been obtained when done
the saddle mode. And this done late
in
in
the spring, whea the vines begin to grow.
One important part has almost been
overlooked. You must select stocks of as
near similar wood; for instance, the Dela
ware will hardly take at all ou a rank fox,
while upon the Clinton arid our wild frost
grape it takes very trcely. Almost auy
kind will take upon the Isabella.
IiARF.y as a Philosopher. Some of
Rarey's sayings are maxims of wisdom.
For instance : "Nature never lies. The
horse i3 honest. The mind of a horse
governs a horse, as the mind of a man
governs a man. If you wish, therefore, to
get control of the horse's body, first learn
to direct his mind. The gentle touch is
more powerful that blows. Women are
better drivers than men, because they
have a gentler touch. Firmness and kind
ness are all the magic there is in my
method. Fear or anger in the mind of
his driver is instantly known to the horse."
.
Hotbeds. Now i3 the time to make
hotbeds. 3Iakc a pile of horse manure a
few feet square and two or three feet
thick. Nail four rough boards together
in the form of a box without top or bot
tom, set it upon the pile of manure and
fill it with good soil to the depth of four
or five inches. Cover the bed with glass,
(old window sash will do,) and in two days
it will be warm enough to receive the
seed. Tomatoes, cabbages and lettuce are
the most suitable plants to force.
Coal Ashes. Coal ashes are stated,
by some who have tried -experiments with
them, to be excellent for putting around
the roots of paoeh trees and gooseberry
bushes in the spring. They are geueraliy
held to be of no use whatever, but as they
contain some traces of potash and consid
erable lime, they will no doubt tend to
destroy grubs and worms.

signal instances of this kind are attested of
