Indiana county, are model Republican
districts. At the late election, they footed
up the nice little majority of almost 50t

for them, for year after year they cu
the same thing. One peculiarity about
these townships is, that they contain the

The Fair. The sixth annual exhibi
tion of the Cambria County Agricultural
Society, which was held on the 3d, 4th
and 5th inst., was quite a success. The
weather -was propitious, and the number
of articles ou exhibition was quite large.
The crowd of people in attendance, how
ever, was small.
Th exhibition in the stock department
was magnificent indeed it is seldom that
one sees better horses, cattle, &c., than
were there collected. The array of fruit,
vegetables, &c, could not be surpassed.
It was in the ladies' department, howev
er, that the finest display was made. This
room was crowded with specimens of plain
and fancy needlework, embroidery, pain
tings, bouquets, and other elegant et cet
eras, while preserves and jellies of all kinds,
bread and butter, and a hundred other
of the solids and delicacies of life filled
up the interstices. There were numerous
articles in this department that did not
obtain premiums which were well deser
ving thereof.
Friday was the principal day. A lar
ger crowd visited the grounds on that day
than on the oiher two combined. At 10
o'clock, A. M., a grand foot-race for two
purses of 85 and S2.50, was run. A large
number of competitors entered the ring,
but the prizes were carried ofF by John O
Evans and M. Downey. The ladies'
equestrian match carce off at 3 o'clock, P.
M. Six ladies competed for the honors,
namely, Mrs. Geo. Earrett. Mrs. Dr. Low
man, Mrs. I. Crawford, Mi.-s Nell", 3Iiss
ilurlcy and Miss Magellan. The first
premium was awarded to Miss Nt-ff and
lie second to Miss Magchan. At '2 A.
M., another foot-race came olT. The lucky
individuals this time were Hugh Jones,
first premium of SI; C. T. Lawson,
-oecnu premium of 62; and Patrick Do
ran, third premium cf SI. At 4 1. M.,

Horse Thief Arp.estei. On Sunday

In horse thieving, ami lodged in our coun
ty jail. The circumstances which led to
his arrest are as follows: He was travel
ing westward, and when a few miles east
of this place he fell in with two boys who
were going the same direction, lleing of
a communicative turn of mind, he made
"onfidutites cf them, and, among ether
things, he tld them that lie had assisted
in running a horse from Indiaua county
I'.wn the country. After they had pro
eeedei a few miles west of town, h-ch river
on to mo pretext gave tho hoys the go-by,
and took to the woods. The boys contin
ued on their way, and meeting with Mr.
Thomas 11. 3 'avis, of Jackson tp., they

UU. Mr. I), determined to keep a look-
oat for the chap, and towards evening he
came along, whoi: he was unceremoniously
stopped and brought to town and commit
ted to jail. He subsequently gave such
information as resulted in the finding of
the horse in Clearfield county. The horse
belonged to Thomas .Sloan, of Indiana
county. ichriver was takeu to the Indi
ana jail on Friday.
We may here state, by the way, that
this Schrivcr is the identical personage
who has traveled so extensively over the
country for some time past, and entered
into contracts for the purchase of innu
merable farms contracts which he has
not and never intended fulfilling. From
all accounts he may safedy be set down as
an unmitigated villain.
Literart. The question selected for
discussion at the "Ebensburg Literary As
sociation," on next Friday evening is :
Resolved, That there should be an Agricultu
ral piper established in this county.
On the afiirniative, Morris K. Evans and
Edward I. Evans: and on the negative,
Dr. Geo. R. Lewis and Geo. W. Oatnian.
The following officers were elected for
the next quarter on Friday evening last:
l'res't., David II. Roberts; Vice President,
Maurice J. Evans; Recording Secretary,
Geo. Oatman; Corresponding Secretary,
John M. Jouos; Treasurer, Daniel O.
Evans; Librarian, It. Singer; Executive

This some- !
what celebrated gentleman, it will be re-
membered, after a short stay at Pittsburg, i
proceeded to Harrisburs: via the Pennsvl- i
vania Railroad. In doing so, he unavoid
ably passed through a portion of Cambria
county. A reporter of the New- York
Tribune, who accompanied the Prince,
thus speaks of that portion of the trip
which will most interest our readers :
"The passage to Ilarrisburg was through
the most remarkable country yet traversed.
At Gullitzin, upon the summit of the Alle
gheny Mountain!, the Prince nnd his suite
including Colonel Grey, Major Treesdale, Sir
Henry Howard, and others left the car and
mounted the locomotive, uou which they
rode as far as Aloona, gaining the freest
view of '.he remarkublerailway descent around
Kittanning Point, and of the wonderful scene
ry hereabout revealed. At Altooua the
Prince resumed his car, leaving it only at
Harrisburg."
There, denizen of the mountain ! Since
you have ascert int d that a Prince has
even suffered himself to fwel an interest in
your matchless scenery, won't you have a
more exalted opinion of your Mountain
Home ? We will very much so.
Wonderful Canine Instinct. We
clip the following from the last Moinifnin
cr : On last Wednesday morning, Pe-ter
Mallick left the house of Win. Ellis in
Blacklick township, to gather chestnuts,
accompanied by a small dog. In the
evening the dog returned and appeared to
act strangely refused food, and would
run out of the house and look up the
road. Mr. Ellis and John Luke followed
the dog about three quarters of a mile,
and found Mallick under a largo chestnut
tree, terribly mutilated. It is supposed
that he had climbed the tree and fell
about sixtvJeet.
