winter clothing was found to be a decided-

DAY:::
Fatal Mistake. The Johnstown
Echo say3 that a woman named Clarke,
residing at the South Fork, in Croyle
township, was bitten by a rattlesnake on
Monday evening, Cth iust., and now lies
in a critical condition. It sceins that
some one of the family discovered the
snake in the immediate vicinity of the
house, and upon making known the fact
to Mrs. Claike, she procured a hatchet for
the purpose of decapitating the reptile,
but being near-sighted, she mistook the
tail for the head, and whacked it off. (!)
Tho snake, or that portion of it which w;.s
left, took immediate refuge in some weeds,
but was followed by Mrs. C, who, while
parting the weeds with a view to again
discover aud finish the snake, received the
fatal bite on one of her hands, from the
effects of which it is doubtful whether she
will recover, although her attending phy
sician entertains hopes of the kind.
Serious Accident. On Tuesday of
last week, an accident of a very serious
nature occurred to llev. Festus Tibbott,
an old and highly respected citizen of
rCambria township, who resides about one
and a half miles south of town. It ap
pears that he was engaged at the time in
repairing something about the gri.t-mill
of his son, whcii a plank uptn which he
was standing broke and precipitated Mm '
,. - , , '
a distance oi about Li I ecu icct to the
grouud. lie was taken up insensible, aud
on examination it was found that two of
his ribs were broken, and that his entire
piual system was materially deranged.
Fears were for a time entertained that he ;
would not recover, but we understand that
he is gradually improving.
PERSONAL. We have hitherto omitted !
to notice the fuct that Col. J. M. Lytic, J
formerly of Blair County, has been, with j
l.tj 4o 1 1" crilmiritiiu -l 4Y.r tvrwl.-a in TM- I
ensburg. The Col. is now connected with
the wholesale boot and shoe establishment
of Messrs. Warren & Wilson in the city
of New York, where he will be happy to
fill all orders in his line. Now that the
facilities for transportation from the Em
pire City are so excellent, may not our Eb
ensburg merchants do well to give the Col.
a call when making their purchases? To
deal with him is to daal with
man.

Sugar, in Pjarhiwea. As the season j
when this complaint is generally preval- j
ent is about at hand, it tu.iy be of use to j
know that some eminent doctors reconi-
mend the medical u.ie of sugar as of great j
value. In the case of a chil l of four years, j
half an ounce of powdered white sugar
g'nen every hoursoon induced a favorable j
turn to symptons which had long resisted
all ordinary means of cure.
Curious Discovery. The other d:y,
while a citizen of this place was digging
in his garden, he came across a curiously
engraved stone. After bringing it to the
11 "lit and washing the dirt from its sur
face, the following characters were plainly
discernible : ''do to (J. 11. Jones' and
buy your boots and shoes, hats and caps,
ready-made clothing, &c." Good advice,
to say the least of it.
Important. We are authorized to an
nounce that J. A. Wissel, of the High
street bakery, is now prepared to accom-
noJate the public with pound, cup, sweet, I
finger, ami other cakes, candies of nil i
Liiuls. together with a prime article of
j rr
jilc, small beer or lemonade. Ail articles
are warranted to rive satisfaction. Pur
chasers are invited to roll :n.
Li very Stable. Mr. J -mes A . Moore,
we understand, has established in rliis
place a livery stable', where persons who
so desire can procure hoiscs. busies, &.c.
An institution of this kind has long been
needed.

arrived for enjoying this favorite sauce
we give the following recipe for making
it : Wash the tomatoes and slice them ;
put them into a kettle with as much wa
ter as will cover them, boil until soft and
strain them through a cullender; put the
juice agaiu into the kettle aud boil three
hours, then measure it ; put it again into
the kettle and bring to a boil, then to 1
of stiained juice add 4 tablespoonsful of
salt, 4 of black pepper, 1 of cayenne, 2 of
cloves, 3 of all ice, 1 of cinnamon, 4 of
musiaru, i tcacupnu or sugar, l nuirt oi
vinegar, (a little more sugar, say li tca
cujslul ill improve it.) Mix the above
spices in a little of the juice before put
ting them iuto the kettle, and boil a short
time after putting them in. The vinegar
should not be put in until the last of the
above ingredients, then let all boil a short
time, a:td put into crocks or tin bucket.-,
aud let stand over night. In the morii

place, after having been tightly sealed

Miraculous LcAri:.--One day last
week, Mr. I'arks, mtiier at Uukcr's Crys

he was engaged in greasing some of the
machinery, ;tiil in doing .so, came iu con-

was thrown, on that side of the shaft, for
had he been thrown to the other side, he
would have fallen upon the straps and

almost to powder. Other than a few slight
bruises, he received no injury. How he
escaped with sound limbs, even falling
where he did, is a mastery. Attmwa 7VA.
