Cool Impudence. A scene occurred
at a Western depot not long since, which
for oool impudence has seldom been par
alleled, The particulars are given bj a
bystander :
I was standing at the depot on the ar
rival of the St. Louis packet, when a gen
tleman came up and addressed a man
standing close by me, evidently a stran
ger to him, with the comoiou Western
question
"Do you use tobacco ?"
"Yea, sir," he graciously replied, and
producing a plug of the largest dimen
sions, he handed it to the applicant, who,
taking out his knife, cut oil about one
filth, with the common observation
'There's tobacco enough for any man,
ain't there ?"
'Well, I should think there was."
"Very well take it, then !'' he coolly
replied, and handing the small piece to
him, he put the plug in his pocket and
walked away.
y In one of the court at Hartford,
Conn., recently a woman was testifying
in behalf of her son, and swore that he
"worked on a farm ever since he was born."
The lawyer who croas examined her, said.
"You assert that your son has worked on
a farm ever since he was born ?" "I do."
"What did he do the first year?" "Ifc
',2kedt " she replied. The whole court
laughed heartily, and the witness was
questioned no further.
It is little troubles that wear the
heart out. It is easier to throw a bomb
shell a mile than a feather even with
artillery. Forty little debts of a dollar
each, will cause you more trouble and
dunning than one big- one of a thousand.
tgJ- Liberty will not descend to a peo-
fdej a people must raise themselves to
iberty ; it is a blessing that must be earn
ed, before it can be enjoyed.
8S The last new wrinkle is "cable
punch," at which intemperate youths take
a "long pull, a strong pull, and a pull al
together." t&F Honesty is always the best policy.
USEFUL IJVKXTIOXS.
