Oily Correspondence. Tie fullovr.
ing, from a fucotioua oorrespondant of tho
Sandusky Hnyaitr, who writes U that pa
per, from the oil region la Trumbull Co.,
Ohio, U htout as slippery a corrcsspouvkac
& we Lav boo a lately :
-Dsah Euuoa : Everything about
hera is so greasy and oily, it h with ex
treme difficulty that I can writ at all.
My pen slips out of my Angara; there ia
an oily scum on tho Ink; the puper is fair
ly t apparent, and I fcloih around la my
thair in a deuced uuplcaaant manner. Pa
tience and perscvefuuco (sweet oil is un
necessary here) will, however, overcome
many obstacles.
"I arrived here at a very late hour last
night, on au oil train, and might as well
have come on train oil, as we were 16 hours
behind time. All trains are behind time
here, I learn, owing to tho accumulation
of oil on the track at this end of the road.
The oil fries out ot the ground and lubri
cates tho rails for a great distance. We
ehouldn't have arrived here at all if the
passengers hadn't got out and sprinkled the
track with cigar ashes.
"I slipped out of bed (nobody 'arises'
here ; we all slip into bed and dip out) at
an early hour this morning, and began in
vestigations. I found a section embracing
fourteen thousand acres of land, chuck full
of oil springs.
"Drilling is unnecessary here, as the oil
boils up in springs, sometimes to the height
of twenty-five feet, and is caught in tin
pails as it comes down. On a hot day, I
am told, it is no unusual thing to sec the
women frying doughnuts in these jets of
oil. Tho balls of dough are dropped into
the jets, where they are allowed to toss
cbout like corks in a fountain, uutil they
are fried by the heat of the sun.
"The only species of tree which abounds
here is the 'slippery elm. These trees are
bo slippery, a squirrel can't climb them
without dlppiug his paws in Spauldiug's
Prepared Glue, a small bottle of which he
always carries suspended about his neck.
There are a few maple trees here, but uo
Ruzar is made, as nothing but oil runs
out when they are tapped.
"There is one considerable sized creek
running through Trumbull County, which
is all oil. It was discovered a short time
ago in a singular manner. Three boys
went in bathiug, and when they came out
were so greasy they couldn't stay in their
clothes. As fast as they slipped them on
they would slip off again, and one of the
lads, in a heedless moment, narrowly es
caped slipping out of his skin. On reach
ing home., their parents, being exceeding
ly frugal, wrung them out, and extracted
about fourteen gallons of pure oil from the
three hoys ! Fact. A company are erec
ting a factory on the banks of this river,
preparing to dip candles in it.
"The priucipal amusements here are
climbing greased poles aud catching oiled
pigs, the necessary appliances being con
stantly on hand. Sliding dowu hill is
popular among all classes during the
summer mouths. This is effee'ed with
out sleds, on a hill of lid tallow, just
back of the tavern.
"There was a thunder-storm this after
noon, and the electric fluid ran down one
of those slippery elms I told you of; I
was treated to my first view of 'greased
lightning.' It is quite common here, they
say. Thunder is divested of all its harsh
intonations, by the minute particles of oil
which fill the air and grease the wheels of
Jove's noisy chariot.
"If any of your readers think I have
cut it fat' in this letter, let them visit the
Oil Springs and see for themselves."
Milwackie Bricks. One of the most
singular wagers we ever heard of, says
the Buffalo Courier, was made in Chi
cago on the day before the munici
pal election in that city. The bet was
between a Water street merchant and Ned
Obsorne of the Tremont Ilouse, the larg
est cigar and tobacco dealer in the city,
and was to the effect that if Wentworth
'was not elected, Obsorne should have the
privilege of kicking the Water street mer
chant aforesaid, from the Tremont Ilouse
to Springer street. The day after the
election, the merchant having lost, came
to Osborne's store, and presented his per
son to him for the contemplated kicks, ani
demanded that Osborne should take the
stakes. Osborne had been training his
right leg all the previous day, and had
armed his foot with a heavy cowhide boot,
with soles as thick as two clapboards. The
merchant started up by the Tremont, Os
born delivering a heavy kick as he start-
ed, 'but drewback his foot with a spasmod
ic action and paroxysm of countenance
absolutely pitiful. He tried another one,
but the looser flinched not, and he kept
o his way undisturbed by the volley he
had received. The result of this was
worse than the first, and he fairly curled
p on the ground and howled for pain.
'ihe merchant stoopcl and calmly inquir
ed : "Why don't you take the stakes?"
"What have you Ot in tie basement of
Tour pants?" cried Ned. "3Iilwaukie
Wicks," shouted the merchant, "and we
, ain't within-a mile of Springer street yet."
Osborne subsided, paid the champagne,
" and has been wearing a list slipper ever
since.
jE3.Aun-t E was trying to pursuade
. littl Eddie to retire at sundown, using as
an argument that the little chicken went
to roost at that tiiao-
"Yes," says Eddy, "but the old hen al
ways goes with them."
Aunt tried no further argument with
the young hopeful, but allowed him to re
tire at his pleasure.
