Ji. !. ' t t MIsq ellaxxy . TnE Dangers of Sriuxo. We, have the highest "medical authority fur saying that a gTeat many more persons die iu .May than in November. The natural cau ses are, 1st The increased dampness of the atmosphere, proven by the fact that doors which shut easily in winter, do not dj so in the summer. 2d Nature takes away the appetitite fur meals, for heat giving food, in order to prepare the body ibr the increased temperature of summer. But two errors in practice at this time in terfere withwise nature's arrangements, and induce many and painful and danger ous diseases. First, the amount of clo thing is diminished too soon. Second, the conveniences of fire iu our dwellings are removed too early. All pcrsous, es pecially children, old people, and those in delicate health, should not remove the thickest woolen flannel of mid-wiuter, un til some time in May, and then it should be merely a change to a little thinner ma terial. Furnaces should not be removed, nor fire-places and grates cleaned for the summer, until the first of June ; for a brisk fire in the grate is sometimes very comfortable in the last week in May; that may be a rare occurrence, but as it docs sometimes take place, it is better to be prepared for it than to sit shivering for half a day, with the risk to ourselves and children, of some violent attack of spring diseases. By inattcution to these things, four causes are in operation to chill the body and induce colds and fevers. First, The dampness of the atmosphere in Mav. Second, That striking falling off in appe tite for meals and other "heating" food. Third, The premature diminution of clo thing. Fourth, The too early removal of the conveniences of fire. And when the very changing condition of the weather of May is taken into account, it is no wonder that under the influence of so many causes of diminution of the temperature of the body, many fall victims to disease. In November, the healthiest month in the year, we have put on our warmest clothing, kindled our daily fires, we have found "a keen relish for substantial food, while the dauipuess of the atmosphere has been re lieved by the condensation of increasing cold. The wise will remember these things for a lifetime, and teach them to their children. Dimensions op American Lakes. The following is related as the origin of the use of the thistle, as the national em blem of Scotland : When the Danes In vaded Scotland, they availed themselves of the pitch darkness of night to attack the Scottish forces unawares. In approach ing thorn unobserved, and marching bare footed to prevent their tramp being heard, one of the Danes trod upon a large prickly thistle, and the sharp cry of pain which he instantly uttered suddenly apprised the Scots of their danger, who immediately ran to their arms, and defeated the foe with great slaughter. The thistle was thenceforward adopted as the national in signia of Scotland. A Roland fob an Oliver. A wag of a fellow by the name of Thornton, one day got up during service and walked out of church making a rather prominent dis play of a gold-headed cane. The preacher, a well-known eccentric character, with a woodeu leg the result of his love of fox hunting immediately pounced upon him in this wise; "Pull that cane from under your arm, my young friend, and throw it away. There are no gold-he ided canes in heaven." Whereupou Thornton, turning around, rcidied: "Pull that stieL- nf out of your pants, my old friend, and throw it away, heaven.' No grecn-hoiuc or hot-house should ever be without it, iu a green or dried state ; cither the stalks or the flowers will answer. It is a Mivular fact that, if a plaut is drooping and appa rently dying, in nine cases oat of ten it will recover if you plant camomile near it Dare Not Sleep With 1 I im.
