11 TIOW rUTZK-FliiHTEUS ARE TllAINEl). The course of training to which the "butter" is subject is pretty much the regular routine, lie rises at six o'clock in tlie morning, and, alter swallowing a mixture of wine and raw Ciijr, he starts oiF for a seven mile walk, with his tniiri rrs. On lii.s return, he i.s cnrcfully rubbed down, and puts on dry clothes. At eight o'clock, he takes his breakfast, consisting of a porter-bouse steak, without fat. lie takes neither tea nor eolToo, and he ac companies his sU':ik with bread. After break f'i.sr, he reads the news for half an hour or so, alter which lie starts off uii mother seven miles' walk. On his return lie is again rubbed down, and changes his clothes; after which he exercises with the dumb-bells, and balls and pulleys, and punches a sand-bug, which is placed in a hanging position, lie sits down to dinner between twelve and one o'clock, when he again regales himself with a substantial heel-steak and bread, varied occasionally with a broiled chicken, which he washes down with a solitary glass of sherry. After dinner, he starts on a third walk of about eight miies, after which he has a set-to with the gloves with his trainer, and with such of his friends as may wish to take a turn with him. At 7 o'clock he takes his supper, which consists of pre cisely the same materials as his breakf:ist, csehewipg tea arid coffee as before. .Be tween S and I) o'cWk he retires to bed. This course of treatment tends to de velope and harden the muscles, while it diminishes the fat, which is thereby eon verted into muscle. To this end, the 'butter" is forbidden to eat anything of a greasy or sloppy nature. None of his food is boiled, stewed, or fried. It is all broiled. A Hood An tenor k. Old Parson IJ who presided over a little flock in one of the back towns in the ita'.c of M . was, without any exception, the most eccentric divine we ever knew. His eccentricities were carried as far in the pulpit as out of it. An instance we will relate: Among the church members was one who invariably made a practice of leaving ere the parsou was two-thirds through his sermon. This was practiced so long that alter a while it became a matter of course, and no one, save the divine, seemed to take notice of it. And he at length told Brother 1. that such a thing must be needless, but 1. said at that hour his fam ily needed his services at home, and he must do it, nevertheless. On leaving church he always took a round about course, which, by some mysterious means, always brought him iu close proximit- to the village tavern, which he would outer, "and thereby hangs a tale." l'arsou B- learned from some source that V's object in leaving church was to obtain a "dram," aud he determined to stop his leaving and di.-turbing the con gregation in future, if such a thing were possible. The next Sabbath Brother P. left his seat at the same time, and started for the door, wheu l'arsou B exclaimed : "Brother P." 1., on being addressed; stopped short, and gazed towards the pulpit. "Brother P.," continued the Parson, "there is no need of your leaving church at this time, as I passed the tavern this morning, I made arrangements with the landlord to keep your toddy hot till church w;ls out." The surprise and mortification of the brother can hardly be imagined. Courting of a Past Man. Pitts is a last man, a sharp man, a man of busi ness tact, aud wheu Pitts goes into a store to trade, he always buys at the lowest cash price, and he says "Well, I'll look about, and if I don't find anything that suits me better, 111 call and take this." Pitts, like all fast men, is partial to woman, and young ones in particular. Now quite lately Pitts said to himself, "1 am getting rather long in years, and guess I'll get married." His business qualities wouldn't let him wait, so oil he travels, and calling upon a young lady friend, opened a conversation by remarking that he would like to kuow whnt she thought about his getting mar ried. 'Oh, Mr. Pitts, that's an affair in which I am not so greatly interested, and I prefer to leave it to yourself." "But," eays Pitts, "you are interested, and my dear girl, will you marry me ?" The yo-ing lady blushed very red, hes itated, and finally, as Pitts was very well to do iu the world, and morally, financial ly and politically of good standing iu soci ety, the accepted him. "Whereupon Pitts responded : "Well, well, 111 look about me, and if I don't find anybody that suits me letter than you, I'll come back." A BtM.lON. What a very great sum is a billion.
