Mlsoollany, The Silent Good-Bje. There's a language that's mute, there's a bi- lence that speaks From the deepest recess of the heart ; 'Tis a flood of strong feelings, and often it breaks O'er the spirit of friends when they part. Sometimes, when we grasp the hand of a friend, Who offers to bid us good-bye, Our emotions too strong, we only can bend To the sorrow that sends forth a sigh. The Post-office Brr.L a Law. Its Provisions. The President having ap proved of the poat-oflice bill, it is therefore a law. As amended previous to its passage, it appropriates $4,200,000 for supplying the deficiency in the revenue.! and defraying the expenses of the di partmeut for the year ending with J uae la.it, and toward the sup port of the department for the IL-oal year ending June next, S 1,000,000: aud the further sum of 2,400,000 :a payment of the salaries of officers and clerks, and ior the transportation ot tue mails, wrapping paper, bags, stamp, L:c. Interest at the rato of siz pr cent, per annum to continence sixty days after the expiration of the quarter iu which the ser vice was rendered, but ia no oases-prior to the 1st of May, 150, to the present date shall be paid on all sums found due to the contractors themselves, iu full fur all damages by reason of the failure or delay in the payment. No interest is allowed on the payments for the last quarter, ending with December. A sum for this purpose is appropriated. The Folly of Pride. Take some quiet, sober moment of life, and add to gether the two ideas of pride and man ; behold him, creature of a tpau high, stalk ing through infinite space in all thegrau deur of littleuess. Perched on a speck of the universe, every wind of heaven strikes into his blood the coldness of death ; his soul floats from his body like melody from the string; day and night, as dust ou the wheel, he is rolled along the heavens, through a labyrinth of worlds, and all the creations of God are flaming above and beneath. Is this a creature to make for himself a crown of glory, to deny his own flesh, to mock at his fellow, sprung from that dust to which both will soon return ? Does the proud man not err ? Does he not suffer 'i Does he not die ? "When he reasons, is he never stopped by difficulties ? 'When he acts, is he never tempted by pleasure ? "When he lives, is he free from pain ? When he dies can he escape the common grave ? Pride is not the heritage of men : humility should dwell with frailty, and atone for ignorance, error, and imperfection. The Pleasures and Advantages of Labor. There is a very false notion in the world respecting employment. Thousands imagine that, if they could live in idleness, they would be perfectly hap py. This is a great mistake. Every in dustrious man and woman knows thatnoth ing is so tiresome as being unemployed. During some seasons of the year we have holidays, and it is pleasing on these occa sions to see the operative enjoy himself ; but we have generally found that, after two or three days recreation, the diligent mechanic or laborer becomes quite un happy. Often he sighs over the wretch ed ness of being idle. The fact is, we are made to labor, and our health, comfort and happiness depend upon our exertion Whether we look at our bodies or exam ine our minds, everything tells us that our Creator intended that we should be active. Hands, feet, cj-es, and mental powers show that we were born to be busy. If we had been made to be idle, a very large portion of our bodily aad mental faculties would be redundant. Woman's Advantaoes. Some of the advantages of women over mea are as fol lows: A woman can say what she chooses without being knocked down for it. She can take a snooze after dinner while her husband goes to work. She can go into the street without being asked to treat at every saloon. She can paint her face if it is too pale, and powder if it is too red. She can stay at home in time of war, and can get married again if her husband is killed. She can wear corsets if too thick other fixins if too thin. She can eat, drink, and be merry, with out costing her a cent. She can get divorced from her husband whenever she sees one she likes better. She can get her husband in debt all over, until he warns the public by adver tisements not to trust her on his account. Taicisq it Coolly. A gentleman, a day or two since, was sitting in a barber chop, undergoing some tonsorial operation when his partner in business stepped in and quietly remarked : 'lirown, our place is on fire." "Well, let it burn it's insured." "Yes, I know, but it will make a pretty warm fire, and I thought I'd just drop in and tell you obout it; I didn't know but jou'd waut to see the old place buro-' "Well, wait a minute or two, till nxs other viiLLcr's trimmed, aad I'll go with you." After being well brushed, and putting on his gloves, 31 r. lirown started to see "ib.3 eld place burn." B5u How to grow bull rushes tease a short horned Durham in flv time.
