Our venerable fellow citizen is no more ! He breathed his last in the arms of hi family, on Saturday morning last, aged 7G years and one month. The career of Judge Noon wa3 a long and eventful one. He was born in Donegal, Ireland, tho 5th day of Febru ary, 17S4. At the ago of 13 he was bearer of despatches for the United Irish men, and, as such, was arrested and im prisoned. This was during the period of the so-called Irish Rebellion. Young and enthusiastic he could not brook the oppression of the times, and we find him, on the anniversary of American Indepen dence, ia the year 1S01, landing at New Castle, a stranger in our happy and free country. lie sooi afterwards settled at Blair's Gap, where he taught a school, and was received into the family of John Blair, Esq., with whom he was an especial favorite. He became a citizen of our county prior to its organization, as such, and continued his residence here until the time of his decease. Few men have filled more places of honor and trust, and perhaps none with greater acceptance. He was elected second Sheriff of Cam bria county in IS 10, and, on retiring in IS 13, was appointed County Treasurer, which office he held for three consecutive years, and retired in 1S1G. In 181S he wa3 elected to the Legisla ture, and traditions pronounce him to have been an active and useful member of that body. In the struggle between Shultze and J Gregg for the office of Governor of Penn sylvania, in 1823, the last election un der the old oigauiztiou of parties he warmly advocated the election of the former and by him was aDnointed Pro- i - J thonotary, fc, which offices ho held for nine year?, and again retired in 1S32. In 1S-13 Gov. Porter gave him the ap pointment cf Associate Judge, from which office, he, with his venerable com peer, Judge Murray, retired in 1851 ; on which occasion the Ebcnsburg Bar tendered theui a public supper for the correctness and purity of their official conduct. From the latter period Judge Noon has lived the life of a quiet, unobtrusive citizen. While in Lis intercourse with the world, those " high social qualities which adorned his character, and made him a favorite in every circle, shone with un- ! diminished lustre ;" and much more in the exercise of that greatest of all Chris tian virtues charity, llis charity, in deed, knew no bounds and it was his daily province to assuage the pangs of sanding to console the afilicted to succor the needy and the prayers of many a widow and orphan shall ascend to the throne of grace for him who was always their friend and protector. lie has departed full of years and of honors. Light be the green turf upon his breast audlong, long may his mem ory be cherished by a grateful community in which he had no enemy because ha never deserved one. J. Personal Mention. Whilst in Bal timore a pdace we seldom visit, and where almost every one is a stranger to us we were delighted to meet with our friends, Dr. Charles Walter and Col. John Hill. As our readers well know, both these gen tlemen formerly resided in the Mountain County ; Dr. Walter having practised medicine with great acceptance several years at the Summit, and Col. Hill hav ing been engaged for some time in the mercantile business at Wilmore. Dr. Walter enjoys a very extensive asd lucrative practice in Baltimore, and deser vedly stands in the front ranks of his pro-fes.-ion. His office and Drug Store are on the corner of Baltimore and Poppleton sts. Should any of his Cambria county friends and they are many havo occa sion to visit Baltimore, they will know where to find him. Col. Hill is engaged in the extensive Grocery and Commission House of Messrs. Reynolds, Smith & Co., at No. 40 N. How ard street. He is well known to the mer chants of our county, and we are glad to note that all of them who purchase in Baltimore, show their appreciation of the man by giving him their patronage. To these two gentlemen we are indebted for many favors during our short stay in the Monumental City. They both have our very best wishes for their future pros perity and happiness. Court began its session on Monday last, the Bench being full. The atten dance is small, and the business generally unimportant. Next week we will give a4 report of th ease disponed of. New Book, In press, and will be pub lished, on March 17th, a new work by the distinguished American authoress, Mrs. Emma D. E. N. Southworth, entitled "The Haunted Homestead," with an auto biography of the author. Complete in one large duodecimo volume, neatly bound in cloth, for one dollar and twenty -five cents ; or in two volumes, paper cover, for one dollar. The Publishers take great pleasure in being able to present to the American public another new and charming work by the popular American Authoress, Mrs. Emma D. E. N. Southworth. She is ex celled by no living female writer in the world. Her style is free from insipidity on the one hand and bombast on the oth er ; and though we meet with forcible, we are never startled with iufhited language. Her characters are rarely under, but nev er overdrawn. Her scenes are life pic tures, her incidents founded on facts, and her sentiments arc characterized by a sin gular purity both of conception and ex pression. She has the r-ire faculty of say ing what she means, and of saying it in such a manner as that her meaning can not be misinterpreted. In short, she pos sesses in an eminent degree those qualifi cations which are the peculiar preroga tives of a good writer ; while she delights the reader's imagination with her descrip tive beauty, she applies home truths to their understanding with the force of ra tional conviction. The "Haunted Home stead" has been pronounced by those who have read the proof-sheets, to be her best work. This is sufficient to commend it to perusal, and we anticipate for it a great popularity. For sale by all Book sellers. Copies of either edition of the work, will be sent to any part of the United States, free of postage, on remitting the price of the edition they may wish, to the publishers, in a letter. Published and for sale at the publish ing establishment of T. B. Peterson & Brothers, 30G Chestnut St., Thilad'a. A. J. IIiiey, Esq. On a recent visit to Washington Cit-, we had the pleasure of meeting with our much esteemed friend A. J. Khey, Esq., formerly of this coun ty. We need not tell our readers that we foun 1 him as of yore, the same affable, courteous and obliging gentleman they know he couldn't be any other. There, as well as here in his native county, he is a general favorite. For the man- good qualities of his head and heart he is esteem ed and loved by all who know him j as an accountant and business man, he ranks in the first class of the best officials under the general government. During our brief stay in the Federal City, by his many acts of kindness, he has placed us under obligations which we fear we shall never be able to repay. May God bless him ! " Admitted. On Tuesday morning last, on motion of Maj. James Potts, W. II. Rose, Esq , of Johnstown, was admitted to practice law in the several courts of Cambria county. Mr. Rose read in the office of Joliu P. Lin. on, Esq., and we arc informed by his committee that he passe I a highly creditable examination. He is a young gentleman of fine ability, and w ill be an ornament to the profession in which he has engaged. We wish him plenty of paying clients. CoriitESl'ONPENCE.
