There are none of ; cur readers, we venture to say, who have ; I not hoard of those good educational gath 1 1 jjinqs yclept spelling-schools have not ; I themselves, perhaps, attended and partici f I fated in the fun and frolic always inci f 1 dent to such occasions. We have; and we i niust say, that, for real, genuine pleasure, untrammelled by the conventionalities of '-Society," in no better mode of passing an occasional evening has it been our good fortune to participate. Spelling-schools, I however, are not now as they used to I was they are fallen, like many other great 1 institutions, into disuse and decay. Hut f they are endeared to us by many inef faceable incidents fond remembrances of the past landmarks of our younger, and, ts is generally supposed, happier days. I In their more palmy days, oneyouug indi j vidual, named Robbs, was particularly fond J cif attending spelling-schools, went in fact, ! j every opportunity that offered. At one of j these, he met and became acquainted with j-j a charming youDg lady, named Seraphiiia. ! Now Bobbs, be it known, was a very bnsli- I ful young man, rather "green" withal, and ; j bad no experience whatever in love affairs. 1 1 Therefore, it is not to be wondered at, that, ; J after a short conversation with the beauti ful and sprightly young lady, our suscep- 1 tib'e friend became fascinated with the lyrcn in other words, badly "struck." J lie devoted his whole attention to her du- 1 re the evening; talked to her, laughed with her, and ended by accompanying her home. 1 rchminary arrangements were likewise made for many meetings of a sini- 1 ilir nature. Now, in consequence of the ;! W'py termination of this his first amor da projire, he became, in his own estimation, U Tery consequential man quoted profuse- W from Byron and read largely of that class f oflooke whoseaimit is to show, that, altho' fj "the course of true love may never run ; rnootk," it generally turns out all right in ! the end. Under the existing state of af s I fiirs, tome young larks who were cognizant tn his high-handed proceedings, resolved to bring him back to the common walks cf hfe down to a level with the rest of ainlind. Accordingly, for the better ex raiion of this charitable purpose, they indited him a very affectionate epistle, in viting him, in the name of his Seraphina, to be present at a "spelling," to be held on certain night, where she promised to at tend and bespeaking for the occasion a high old time. To say that IJobbs was pleased on receiving the billet-doux would be a eak expression he was delighted rais 2 to the highest pinnacle of ecstatic blips. On the appointed night, as might be easily gncsscd, he took an early start for the school-house. What recked he though it m raining pitchforks? and the mud was knee deep ?-and he had two miles to walk ? ''bore laughs at locksmiths," and we may 11 at the weather-clerk, and all other ob noxious personages also. On his arrival his destination, however, what was his 'urprise, Lis horror, to find no lights strcam :nf from the windows, to hear no happy 'flouts or merry laughter resounding from Within o 1 r 1 -..., hjSC,j iiuovrapuiuajuyousiy spring- VlDg to meet him ; but instead, darkness, K deon r,J .1: i j :i : -t- uu uuiuiai, mm siieuce, oppressive nd profound, reigning around. Sorrow fully he retraced his steps. Oh ! that wea rJ homeward walk ! The next day, how Tcr, Bet matters all right again ; for he received another letter from h is inamorata I (per aforesaid "larks") stating that in con fluence of untoward events, the spelling jhool had been deferred until thesucceed I ,ng Friday, when and where he was rcquir- w attend if he thought proper. This c'red Up tie C0Dwe bs. He uqw taw, or l0gmed to saw, the cause of his mysteri s and painful disappointment, over which e kid racked his mind all nieht to cypher satisfactory solution, and failed. lj- ,to "obba impatient and impassioned I'posirion, the rusty old wheels of Time pvolred, but when at length the night for j rea"iation of his hopes or fears dul&r Te' e 0Iice more made a bee-line for the f d'Cuol -house. It would be unnecessary i herc 6 into detail about the various cident3 of his journey of his arrival at 1 8chool-nUBs of his finding it eilent as to tho probability or improbability of a spemng being held there that night at !"3 final certainty as to the latter proposition and of his consequent wrath; suffice it to say, that he found himself a second time "sold" and at a very low bid. It is not known with any degree of cer tainty what he said or did on that trying occasion, but tradition asserts he used some very profane and wicked language, and denounced both spelling-schools and Ser aphinas as humbugs in no measured terms. Nor has he, as far as ascertained, ever paid the slightest attention to either since, his appreciation of the truly beautiful and useful being in a great measure dimmed by that last journey in pursuit of happi ness under difficulties. As a fitting con clusion, we would here state that this is an ower true tale of one who "loved not wisely but too well." Plant a Tree. As the Spring time of the year h come, we hope to be excused for again calling the attention of our citi zens to the propriety of planting thade trees along our pavements and side-walks. If there is any one thing which beautifies and adorns a town more than another, or shows its inhabitants to be possessed of the liner susceptibilities of nature, it is that. And what is more grateful or re freshing, during the intense heat of sum mer, than the cooling shade they afford ? Many of our citizens have successfully planted and reared trees in front of their respective domicils, but again there are many who have not. Those who have not yet performed this duty, should not suffer the coming season to pass without making amends for their neglect. Ebcns burg, with what Nature has done for her in the way of beautiful location and ro mantic surroundings, could and should be made one of the handsomest towns in the State. Plant a tree ! Ouk Paper. Tho princi pal feature of the occasion was the inau guration of Mill's equestrian etatue of the "Father ofi country' "Not Good Looking." A correspond ent sends us the following good one, stating that the circumstance actually occurred whilst he was teacher of a class of boys, in a colored Sunday-School, in Washington, Pa. The lesson for the day was in the 26th chapter of Genesis, where Esau is spoken of as having two wives, "which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and Rebekah." Teacher, (imprettive !) " Why did Isaac and Rebekah not wish Esau to marry these daugh ters of the heathen?" A general silence for a short time prevailed, broken only by a few whispered "don'tknows"' when oue little curly-headed chap, familiarly known about town as "Aleck," looked up, his face beaming with intelligent, and replied: "Spec' 'twas' 'easedey wasu'tgood-lookin'."
