A good joke is told of a certain residenter of this place regarding that delicious compound known as buckwheat cake. Johuny (we'll call him) is possessed of a very good "take in" in fact can eat auont as much as the next one and is particularly fond of this cake. Well, not long fcince, in order to reduce to a dead certainty the number he could dispose of at one sitting, some wags agreed to couut. They took their places at the table, and for each cake that Johu ny appropriated, would lift the cloth and make a mark. Things proceeded, swim mingly fur a while, Johnny making sad havoc among the flippers, until at last teeing the drift, he took a sudden depar ture. Ou summing up, it was ascertained that twenty-seven by no means small or delicate representatives of the article in question, besides the "filling in" and ac companying documents, had gone the way assigned to all such, and when next seen, Johnny was making arrangements for the purchase of a half pound of crackers, nvherewith to finish his repast ! Valentine Day. Next Tuesday is Valentine Day the day on which the flirli are said to choose their mates for the coming summer ; the day when gal lant lovyers rend their ladyc-loves thosa beautifully gottcn-up representations of !i heart pierced by one of Cupid's arrows, ingeniously intending thereby to represent the fact of their being "stiuck ;" and the i y when numerous other equally silly uigi ate purlormeJ. Ihe windows 01 ;ie toy-shops are filled to overflowing with lie, poetical and sentimeutal pictures every thing ever heard of, and many ins never head of, and judging from the anner in which they are being purcha- J, we should presume that the day will I e generally "observed." Those of our Jmirers who intend sending us any of lose delightful tokens, will confer a fa- r by paying the postage in advance. f'.WM.EMAS Day. Last Thursday was .ui'iii.'tiias (lav the eventful occasion on a:ch, for the first time since entering it p the fall, the grouud-hog emerges from Is burrow, shakes himself, and takes a at things. The la was visible on several occasions on fiunday, but whether it shone with suf- :ent force to east a shadow, or whether J ground-hog was on the look-out at the articular juncture, we are not prepared say but, let us hope not. Learn to work, and be not dependant upon ser vants to make your bread, sweep your floors, and darn your own stockings. Above all things, do not esteem too light ly those honorable young men who sustain themselves and their aged parents by the work of their own hands, while you caress and receive into your company those lazy, idle popinjays, who never lift a finger to help themselves as long as they can keep body and soul together, and get funds suf ficient to live in fashion. If "you are wise, you will look at this subject in the light we do, and when you are old enough to become wives, you will prefer the honest mechanic, with not a cent to commence life, to the fashionable loafer, with a capi tal of ten thousand dollars. Whenever we hear remarked, "that young lady has married a fortune," we always tremble for her future prosperity. Riches left to children turn out to be a curse oftencr than a blessing. Young woman, remem ber this; and instead of sounding the purse of your lovers, and examining the cut of their coats, look into their habits and their hearts. Mark that they have a trade, and can depend upon themselves -see that they have minds which will IcaJ them to look above a butterfly existence. Talk not of the beautiful white skin and soft delicate hand, the splendid form and fine appearance of the j'oung gentleman. Let not these foolish considerations en gross your thoughts. Dissolution. By an advertisement in to-day's paper, it will be seen that the well known firm of Stahl & Itoberts, of the Jewelry store, have dissolved partner ship Mr. Roberta retiring. The business in all its branches will be carried on at the old stand by Mr. Stahl, where those in need of his services are invited to call. Married. At Florence, on Monday evening, by the Rev.
