How to IZurn Coal.
Nina out of ten who attempt to burn
coal in a stove, waste about as much coal
as is necessary to be consumed lor the ob
taining of all the heat desirable. Observe
the following rules. We will suppose the
stove cleaned out.
First, To make a coal fire : Put in a
double handful of shavings, or l'ylit kin-ling-wood
instead. Fill the earthen cavi
ty (if the stove has one) nearly full of
chunks of dry wood, say four or six inch
es in length. On the tup put a. dozen
lumps of egg coal. Light with a paper
from beneath. In ten minutes add about
twenty lumps more of coal. As soon as
the wood has burnt out, Sll the cavity half
or two-thirds full of coal. The fire will be a
jxtd one. The coal will, by following
these directions, become thoroughly ig
nited. Second, Never fill a stove more than
half or two-thirds full of coal, even in the
coldest weather.
Third, When the fire is low, never
shake the grate or disturb the ashes, but
add from ten to fifteen small lumps of coal
and set the draft open. When these ave
heated through and somewhat iguited, add
the amount necessary for a new fire, but
do not disturb the ashes yet. Let the
draft be open half an hour. Xow shake
out the ashes. The coal will be thorough
ly ignited, and will keep the stove at a
high heat from six to twelve hours, ac
cording to the coldness of the weather.
Fourth, For very cold weather. After
the fire is made, according to the rules
first and third, add every hour about fif
teen or tweuty lumps of egg coal. You
will find that the-ashes made each hour
will bo about in that ratio.
Get your Grain Ileadj'
Every indications goes to show that the
coming 3-ear will be oue of unparalleled
commercial and industrial activity. Man
ufacturing will employ more labor and
capital than ever before ; trading will per
haps be over-done at the east and south,
and a great number of producers will be
drawn off to the Pike's Peak, California,
Arizoniaand Nevada gold and silver mines.
All this will create a demand for asricul
tural products, such as the country has
never seen before, and we should not be
surprised, should wheat reach a higher fig
ure during the winter of lSG'J 01, than it
ever has yet. The course for our farmers
to pursue is obvious. They should pie
pare to put all the grain in the ground
possible, next spring Put your wheat in
very early, lie who gets it in first gets
it out first, and has the largest crop, liut
don't depend on wheat alone; vary your
crops j put in rye, barley, buckwheat, in
season prepare to plant potatoes and veg
etables of all ki.uls; raise hogs and chick
ens, make butter and cheese. Tend to
your business closely this year, aud avoid
the politicians. 15y this means and with
care and economy, next year you will see
us all in a good condition. Rockford
JYetc.
Exterminating Duieus. In fields
newly cleared of wood, an abundant growth
of blackberry, raspberry, and other bri
ery plants usually spring up from seeds
carried there by birds. These seeds have
been waiting for the sunshine to bring
them to life. imiiaj the brush and
rubbish gives them a fine top diessijg,
from which they will thrive with great
vigor, often reju:r)ug years of thorough
culture with hoed crops, to eradicate them.
We have found pasturing such fields with
sheep an effectual remedy. They are
very fond of the leaves and tender young
shoots, and will keep them so closely crop
ped down, that they will have no chance
for life. The following year the land
can be plowed with much less difficulty
than where a thicket of rank briers dis
putes the passage of the team.
Winter WOuk. The Winter is the
proper time to prepare labels, sticks, trel
lises, &c, for spring or summer use. Good
pine or cedar shingles are excellent for
labels, splitting them into pieces of con
venient width, and painting them with
white paint. If the name be written with
a lead pencil before the paint dries, it will
never be effaced by the action of the weath
er. For rods for supporting the stein of
plants, split the shingles round the pieces
and paint them green. We have already
recommended iron wire, cut into proper
lengths and painted green, or galvanized
wire without paint, as excellent for the pur
pose. LlME. An English publication says
that a large plantation of trees has beeu
formed in that country, within a few years
past, without the loss of a Mugle tree, by
putting a small .piantity of time in the
hole when planting the tree. Fourbush
lla. of lime are said to be sufficient for an
acre-. The lime is thoroughly uiixtsd with
titer Boil, Ln order that it may be reached
by the roots, vsiih oijual facility in every
direction, as its "principal effect is to push
forward the tree during the first preca
rious stages of growth.
Use of Bones. There is nothing like
decaying bones for all sorts of frnit'lrees.
They are perhaps best for apules. and tiion
for quinces ; but are good fur aav kind of
f l -.1 1
iruit uuiess it be cranberries, which seem
to live and grow on little but ar and wa
ter. If it is not conveuieut to reduce the
bones in sulphuric- acid; break them up
small aud place them about the roots ot
the tree.
